If you buy from a reputable dealer/cottage manufacturer (such as the ones here on HF), you pretty much can't make a 'bad' purchase (unless you buy without doing your homework). The resale of hammocks...

I'd highly recommend trying to hang everything at least once, close to home (backyard, park, etc), before taking it on a trek.

I use Prusiks and a single Dutch Wasp for my tarp's CRL. The Wasp works well; the mechanical advantage is nice and holds LashIt with a good bite. It's a firm bite but nothing I can't undo comfortably...

The LashIt will work fine as a hammock's adjustable ridgeline. So will Amsteel. I'd guess that the majority here uses LashIt or ZingIt for an SRL (structural ridge line).

Do both sides. Be sure you're using a sealant meant for silnylon (e.g. silicone).

Do you leave your tarp attached to the ridgeline? That helps immensely. Either way, Dutch has some awesome Ti goodies that can help you set up your tarp quick and easy.

It can be interesting but don't worry much. I'm 5'4" and don't have much trouble with an 11' hammock (no way I can sleep in a 10'). Sticks or a trekking pole can help get straps up a few more inches...
