Yup..pretty much depends on the temps for me as well. Lower, steeper, and close the doors when it gets cold.

Shenandoah NP looks like about a 2 hour drive from you. I've heard it's really nice.
My idea of the perfect camping spot is one where the only manmade sounds I can hear are the ones I make myself.
Maybe not, the Carpathians are where vampires come from. ;)
Beautiful spot! Where is it?
Not the sorta thing that should be encouraged. Can't be good for the trees and there's no suspension made that I would trust that much.
I think it can only be an improvement George. Cabela's once stellar customer service had been falling off quite noticeably in recent years.
My new Econ Burrow arrived yesterday! Purchased an "In Stock" "B" item at a great price, and it was in my hands three days later. :) :) :)
It has a working load strength similar to Amsteel, and it doesn't stretch.
A bit hard to get, but I order mine from West Marine.
I use Spyderline in a similar configuration. It holds knots much better than Amsteel.
Might want to do what I did and get the Omega Pacific descender rings from REI. They're really fat and smooth and I feel like they stress my continuous loops far less than a smaller gauge ring would....
Well...like it or not, you can't talk about government control of hammocks without talking about government.
But I'm sure this post is going to get deleted just as many of my previous posts have...
It's not going to hurt the descender ring. I'd be more worried about the triangle ring. If it's welded the force of the descender ring could spread it enough to slip through.
Sure, moccasins, copperheads, and rattlesnakes can climb, but not that well. About the only harmful species that I'd worry about pulling off that kind of climbing feat would be a coral snake, but...
Only place I can find Mountain House in the single serve size.
To reiterate earlier points, I use it because of my dislike for paracord. Paracord is just way too stretchy; especially when it gets (and stays) wet. Zing it/Lash it is hydrophilic and very low...
Square has always worked best for me and I really think it's the most versatile shape.
I've never cared for cat cut. When it gets cold and windy and you're trying to get your tarp edges staked as...
^^ Hope this isn't an obvious question, but which is which??
I think these Econ quilts are gonna be huge for HG!
I've stayed at Mt. Pisgah and will give it a thumbs up as well Jelly. Unfortunately I don't know anything about your other considerations.
Lotsa good stuff to see close by. A great breakfast spot...
I get a deep recuperative sleep in my hammock out in nature that I just don't get at home, plus in our regular workday routine we rise brutally early, so when I'm camping/hiking sleep is a big part...
True dat!
+1 for West Marine. You'll find quite a variety of high quality rope and cordage there. It was one of the only places I could find Spyderline which is what I use on my hammock. It's not an instock...
^ I like it! Has a Bear McCreary quality to it.
Don't know specifically what kind of rope you got, but it probably holds knots much better than Amsteel, if that matters. Amsteel is great stuff, but one of the reasons that it's so often spliced is...
Ninja hammock camping!
Yup...the question wasn't what you listen to in your hammock, it asked what music embodies the mood that a perfect lay gives you.
For me, it would be a perfect margarita and this (the second...
There are a number of cycle friendly trails and roads at Cheaha.
Yup, the tarp and tarp ridgeline always go on the outside. If I get to camp and it's raining, it's the first thing up and I don't have to open my pack to get to it. Then I've got some shelter to open...
Check out the Cheaha Express over on Mt. Cheaha. Some great cycling over there, both on and off road. Also plenty of camping; campsite, primitive, and backcountry.
Don't know if you've tried the Dutch Ridgeline Quilt Hooks, but they really did the trick for me as far as getting the gaps out of my under quilt setup.
Seems as though the problem is the lack of an under quilt. Trying to get insulation both underneath and over you from the same sleeping bag/top quilt or whatever just isn't going to work well. At the...
Oh man, haven't had me some decent cracklins in a while. I'd be interested in your opinion of that InReach sat unit Nodust.
You know I really think that this is an area where the Apex synthetic insulation shines over down. I truly don't think that it can be robbed of its warmth by having cold air passing across it as...
I think the obvious question might be "What are Beetles?" (No punny responses about the band or the bugs please )
Makes me wonder how effective Permethrin is against those larger spiders. I always spray my shoes/boots down thoroughly before every outing.
Total bummer! Gotta say, folks are too quick to diss a plain old Walmart blue tarp. Granted, not ultralight, but 100% waterproof, indestructible, and disposable.
Indeed! :)
Also...don't know if this qualifies, but I quite enjoy the old "Bard of the Yukon" himself, Robert Service. A love which was a treasured gift from my dear old dad.
I became a Jack London fan (as I can see are you) as a very young boy. I'm 64 now and still enjoy his books.
Also +1 for our own Derick Hansen's "The Ultimate Hang."
Same here TB. It was a bit of a desperation move since I had a some new gear that I needed to shake down without driving 3+ hours from the house.
Thought I'd do a quick report on my one night hang in Fountainebleau SP in Mandeville, LA, from the perspective of someone looking to hammock camp there.
First, there are probably a few spots in...
You won't be disappointed. I don't think there's a better synthetic UQ for any price, plus it's a bargain. Just slept in mine for the second time last night, but unfortunately the low was only 66F so...
Fountainbleu isn't exactly the campground of your dreams. It's in the swamp and looks as if it would be wet and muddy most of the time and it's definitely not a place where you want to get caught in...

Update from Fountainbleu SP.
Couldn't get site 97, but 95 is workable.
Still trying to get out to the spillway for a reconnoiter.
Thanks...I'm gonna try to scoot across the Causeway and check it out Saturday.
Hmmm...wonder if I could make an ultralight backpacking version. ;)
Got one of these from George back in November, and I'm very happy with both the quilt, and the service I got from Loco Libre. I'll be doing a review as soon as I've given it a more through shake down.
Hey now there's one I didn't think of at all. Had no idea you could camp out there. Thanks for the suggestion Nodust, I'll probably drive out there this week and check it out.
Thanks MAB. I did think of Desoto, but that's actually almost as far from me as Clear Springs.
Thanks Trailslug. I'm not really familiar with Bogue Chitto and hadn't really thought about it as a possibility. I'm going to do some research and maybe take a ride up there.
I knew I could count...
Thanks Cajunracer. Fountainbleau was a question mark for me for sure. We'd gone RV camping up there years ago, but the RV spots were almost devoid of trees and I don't remember if they had a...
Yes, it is quite wooded up there, and that's one of the areas that I had hopes for as far as finding something.
