I use a sea to summit inflatable pillow, and deflate it until my head is nearly touching the hammock. It also provides insulation, so my underquilt only needs to reach up to my shoulders, not under...
Yeah, they work fine with my 3.3 Kevlar (even better than regular straps, I'd say - since the kevlar ends are folded over and sewn, which keeps them from sliding off the end).
I'm curious how well...
Are there cord pockets on the ends of the cuben fiber tarp skin? If not, could they be added?
What about adding in a micro line loc (those triangle-shaped pieces of plastic) somwhere in the big carl pack hanger for adjustability?
I've been using mine on 3.3 kevlar straps, w/ speed hooks - been working fine.
My straps came with the non-loop end sewed over on itself. The kevlar's pretty thin stuff, but that sewed end still...
I have a 1.6 oz Argon hammock, though my 1.2 oz PolyD hammock is my main one (I think I like the "firmness" of the fabric).
Was thinking that since most of my camping these days is by bike or kayak,...
If you have a setup where your amsteel is larks headed to your webbing (e.g. a whoopie hook, or I have speed hooks), you don't have to worry so much about the webbing being too short, as part of the...
I have a dutch winter sock. I don't think it's something I'd use unless I have to, though, i.e. it's cold and drafty. It's one more piece of stuff to set up (same applies to a bug net, I guess), but...
Polyester will have less strength than the nylon, and be less stretchy.
Maybe put one of those $20 costco down quilts between the snugpak and the hammock to boost its rating?
Snow anchors? That's one piece of gear I don't have. Maybe I could use a bunch of sticks or potty trowels or whatever...
This year spring started in like February - flowers were blooming and everything, then. Not like we had winter this last year, anyways...
I'm picturing being able to lash something down to something, where you want it snug, so it doesn't slide out or shake around, in a way you might not be be able to do with regular velcro?
Been working great for me, same as with regular straps.
Welcome (from a fellow Oregonian)! You're in good company, here.
I think what helped me get comfortable at first was having the hammock long enough, and adjusted to the right hang angle (a fixed...
"civilized" campsites in general will have a spot for a tent, but not necessarily trees.
Not being able to camp with my buds on the beach (have to go in to the edge of the woods and have over some...
I've got adutchables + speed hooks - went straight from whoopies + MSH, so I've never experienced anything with tree huggers. One reason for my setup is the adjustability. The adjustable straps might...
Wilderness Logics also has tarp skins, but I wouldn't know how they compare to the Mountain Goat ones.
I took apart a shower loofah (it's a mesh tube). Seemed to work well; maybe as two pieces it'd be nicer? I liked how the material's stretchy; I didn't like how my tarp flyz on the end would snag when...
I used a square of Tyvek I got from Dutch. Now I don't know where I put it, and I got a polycro ground sheet from Gossamer Gear that's so much lighter and packs smaller. Problem with it it, though,...
That's what I've been using (well, speed hooks instead of whoopie hooks); no complaints so far. The kevlar does seem to wear, but nothing worrisome-looking.
I've put one of those $3 space blankets between my underquilt and hammock for some extra warmth. Blocks breeze, and reflects back some heat.
There's usually Black Friday sales from a variety of vendors; you'll see them posted / discussed on this site.
I've been using mine this whole time. Sure, there's some wear on the leads, but to me it looks like there's more wear from the hooks on the continuous loops. I'm about 190 pounds, if that matters.
I suppose if it's just intended for use while you're sitting there, you can always push from underneath periodically to drain it in heavy rain.
I used to use a marlin spike w/ whoopies; the only dutch suspension stuff I've used are the adutchable clips, and speed hooks.
The adutchable clips I guess are like your dutch clips, but w/...
I ordered one of these for pulling the cord through itself: http://www.dutchwaregear.com/10-loop-turner-splicing-tool.html
And after watching videos like the above, I follow the pictures at...
If you can't find anyone willing to sell some to you, you might try hammock anchors - they look like the same idea but with a t-shaped portion instead of a hook?...
I came back to my hammock at dusk, and I see a pair of legs (jeans) just sitting up in a branch over my hammock. What were they doing - how did they get up there, and why are they just sitting...
I had a 1.2 PolyD fail on me - but that was from the suspension dropping me like a foot and then catching - something I think could fry any hammock. If that 1.2 PolyD gets a rip in it, the rest of it...
I know they have a completely different friction mechanism, but I've been using the kevlar straps with adutchable clips, and the only bad experience I had is when I left my hammock set up blowing in...
My 132" WL Big Daddy tarp works perfectly with my with my Dutch 11-ft hammock - there's extra tarp past both ends of the hammock.
I never paid attention, until I sprayed it down with permethrin, which required me to pick a side as the "outside" to coat with permethrin. I ended up picking the side with the hem edges, reasoning...
Seriously though, he wants you to be happy with the gear, and I get the impression he wouldn't want you to buy stuff if it's not going to serve you well. What helps me resist more purchases is the...
I noticed the static the first time or two I was in it, but not anymore. Maybe I just got acclimated to it, or maybe I got enough skin oils and gunk on it that it no longer charged up like that.
A top quilt is a little smaller than an unzipped sleeping bag; maybe it'd be easier to vent one way or the other. Sometimes I'll stick a leg out or something if I'm a bit warm. I also have a silk...
I've got a Cocoon Ultralight Air-Core; it's got some fabric and apparently some structure so it's not as crinkly as just an air one. Provides some insulation, too. I like that it's inflatable so I...
Did an experiment: With the strap on one hand, and a finger of my other hand through the hook of the adutchable clip, I tried shaking it when there was no tension on it. It seems possible to shake...
If you just tore out the end-channel, could you re-sew that as a shorter hammock, or just tie a knot in it and and larks head the rope on that?
I'd think a 1.1 oz nylon would be stronger than a 1.2 oz polyester? Especially against jumping up and down on - nylon's a stronger and stretchier material.
I guess my excuse for not upgrading to...
To clarify: the suspension slipped a foot or so (either I hit the ground or the sewn end of the kevlar tree strap caught in the adutchable clip), and then there was a rip. The hammock didn't...
Maybe I'm being a little silly worrying about weight, when most of my camping has been by bike, kayak, or car, lately.
Yeah; maybe being a little silly just ordering another one, but if it happens again, I'd probably upgrade the thickness. It's served me well otherwise during "normal" use. There was sudden drop /...
Sleeping on the ground turns out to be kind of neat: you have all this space around you to set your stuff.
On the minus side, I found a tick on my back when I got back.
Looking to get another one - I just ripped mine last weekend.
I don't see the 1.2 mentioned as an option on the "netless hammocks" page, but it is an option on the "half wit" page. Could I request...
If you have a 12-ft stand and an 11-ft hammock, what about skipping the amsteel, and putting toggles in your straps and hanging the continuous loops on the ends of the hammock off those?
You can use Micro Line Locs with that thin line. It won't hold as well as 1.75mm lash-it on tarp flyz (it can slip under tension), but these are guy-lines, not holding up your tarp. That's the setup...
I too have an interest in this "hanging".
I've been using an 11ft PolyD 1.2 hammock. Think it's 7oz. Plenty comfy.
I've been using one of those shower loofahs pulled apart into its mesh tube. Seems to be fine, except it's annoying how the tarp flyz and knots and such get caught in the mesh. I then stuff the tarp...
