Hi Nanok,
Thank you for the post!
How did you tie the tending loop?
I couldn't see very clearly from the video.
Is it one big continuous loop that the guyline tail poses through (loose...
Z-line is fantastic!
- light weight
- no stretch
- high visibility
- grippy (great knots)
- stiff (no tangles)
Never bothered me so I haven't tried this, but one of the thousands of "cord keeper" solutions out there might work.
Gadget, this is a very clean way to tie off. Looks great!
- easily adjustable, can hang close to the tree.
- no loose pieces or fancy hardware to lose or fail
- fast, easy setup and takedown
...
PG, you're too kind. I can't take credit for a simple, plain vanilla slipknot, but will try anyway
Nicely done with the new video!
Hung again for a couple of hours, this time it only got down to 45F.
I was comfortable, but wished I had some candy for the extra calories.
Maybe I just wanted candy.
If forecast is below 40F,...
Sparky and Deltair,
You might have missed post #26 with a link to Gadget's loopalien testing
While the aluminum loopaliens are only rated for 100 lbs (and held 326 lbs before failing!), the...

PG, that sounds like it should work well!
Thanks! I'll pick up a pair sometime to play with.
In the siberian hitch, I wrap the working end a full turn around my hand.
To double it, I wrap two full turns around my hand instead. Otherwise identical motions.
I learned this from HF user...
Sunndog, that is very nice! Thank you for taking the time to make a video.
It is super clear now. My mental image was missing the carabiner on the strap end.
I'll try your way (and some minor...
Phantom Grappler, the Kalmyk loop is a thing of beauty.
Knots from the northern herders are wonderful: Double Evenk/Siberian Hitch, Slipped Lap-knot/bend, and now Kalmyk are some of my favorites.
Very sleek! If I understand correctly your system is well suited to smaller trees you can reach around, with ample spacing -- it would be trickier to wrap around some of the giants in my area, or to...
Great DIY job, that looks so nice and warm!
When I had time to hang it was ~50F, that's all.
I'll try again in the cold morning and see how they handle lower temps. I have a good feeling.
I aimed to copy the dimensions from...
Charlie, I'm glad this was useful to you.
Gadget, I know the feeling. I resisted the Dutch gravitational pull for a long time, and looked to knotty alternatives like you. Couldn't escape in the...
Veterans have seen these things before, but I can't resist plugging the solutions that make me happy if it might help new hangers:
My criteria
- speed
- convenience
- light weight
- low...
Hi gang, photo time!
I haven't slept in the Costco quilts yet, but lounged very comfortably at 50F. No Cold Butt Syndrome, no cold shoulders, toasty toes. Success!

I've been using 0F quilts year-round with venting -- why spend $$$ on a summer quilt when the deep winter one will do the job?
Then Costco happened.
Goals
- cheap
- warm to 50F or lower
- full...
I've been hanging my hammock from titanium loopaliens (original, not UFA) for over a year now, and am very happy with them.
I use 1/8" amsteel, and the loopaliens haven't caused any damage to the...
Seangie, I think you'll be very happy with your purchases.
AndyG, that's right. I used to stuff each quilt in its own stuffsack, and the hammock too. Very neat. Now I pull the sock up and cinch it...
AndyG: right, it's easy to loosen a tube-style sock if you can reach the top of the hammock.
My top quilt still slides off sometimes. The sock will catch it from hitting the ground, but does...
I have a 0F incubator and burrow, and a DIY sock from 1oz ripstop (tubelike, with a drawcord opening).
Socks are nice.
No matter how thick the down, you might get drafts now and then. That means...
I haven't been using marlinspike hitches for a while, but this makes me want to play with them again :)
Thank you!
Very interesting way of using the loop alien to adjust both webbing and cord.
Definitely something to try, thanks for sharing your video!
What fabric did you use? Habotai silk 10mm
How much did your weigh at the time? 165lb
Did it rip lengthwise or across? across, starting near center (not at edge)
Did it rip in a seam...
Another East Bay hanger here.
The hard part is finding free time, but in general I'm down for a hang.
Guys, guys, some of you are missing the original question, the main request for help!
It seems to me that the original post is NOT asking about the popularity, merits or shortcomings of a SLS. Let's...
I'll take the boiler kit off your hands :) PM incoming
How about some shock cord loops zig-zagged under the hammock, going through eye loops sewn into the fabric edges? You could tighten them until you can just barely feel them in an empty hammock, then...
Great ideas all around.
I've played with the triangular line-locs, and found they slipped under heavy winds or snow load. Had better luck with MSR CamRings, which I paid way too much for before...
I love it!
I believe MatthewMeredith's "quick hitch" is what some may know as a "slipped Lap knot".
I've had trouble using the quick/Lap bend for hammock suspension with amsteel and some slippery...
Another alternative is the phantom grappler hitch which is lighter but more fiddly than a Dutch clip. Works fine as a disconnect for height adjustments.
For the record, I love my titanium clips....
Camped in Yosemite a couple of weeks ago. Girlfriend had 18' straps (overkill) and I had 6' straps which I had to extend with 2-3' dogbones. Like Fronkey says, 10' is about right.
There are plenty...
So you want the lightest?
How about:
2 x 6' long 1" Kevlar straps: 43.5 g
2 x 7' long 7/64" Amsteel leads: 20 g
At this point, if you're a total weight looney you could stop. (1) Girth...
It doesn't look pretty, and smells like solvent for a day, but my first thought was liquid electrical tape.
I've used it to make a reflectix sit pad that won't slip from under me - just paint a line...
My tyvek tarp lasted 6 years or so. Finally a corner ripped under snow load this year (tyvek is not rip-stop, so the corner tore right off), but I patched it with tyvek tape and it's usable again....
Most of my backpacking is in the winter, so I spent crazy $$$ on a 0* TQ and full-length UQ. I also made myself a 1.0 oz/yd2 nylon hammock sock to cut drafts. Being otherwise a cheapskate, I haven't...
MDSH, your project sounds glorious!
Please let us know when you have a chance to make progress.
After long supplier delays for cuben, my green winter palace shipped today! Order 7088 placed Feb 4. Very excited :)
Staying warm in winter takes a bit of care:
- Make more heat: eat more, drink plenty of water
- Stay dry: Always be adjusting layers so you don't sweat, vent when needed, keep a dry layer for...
Lash-it has a 500 lb rating, your dog's not going anywhere.
For dogs that are not as well behaved as yours, I'd recommend using a stretchable rope (nylon), or putting a section of bungee/shock...
Extra floor mats are nice, I suppose, but not really necessary.
My winter camp consists of hammock with quilts, hammock sock, and tarp with ridgeline under it.
The sock blocks all wind and...
For a few years, my setup has been doorless tarp (summer), or doorless tarp with a nylon sock (winter). It has served me very well.
The sock is *amazing* at blocking all drafts while being...
I weigh about 155-160 lbs and have hung my hammock on titanium Loop Aliens many times They're holding up with absolutely no sign of wear or damage.
I've used 7/64 amsteel and 1/8 amsteel (fixed onto...
It would be great to share winter hanging tips, I'm interested!
Hopefully we can gather a good group on 3-4, 10-11, or 24-25.
Can't join you Jan17-18 or Feb1-2 -- I'll be near Tahoe those...
It was really nice meeting the early birds, sorry I couldn't stay all weekend!
I forgot my cow fork next to the campfire. If a kind soul is willing to send it to me, I'll PM you my address and...
Excited about this hang! Even though I can only stay for the first half or so.
Fronkey, I'm sure to do some hangs in the Tahoe snow this winter -- just a stone's throw from you. Wouldn't mind...
