I use a strand out of a Cat5 computer cable folded over to splice braided mason twine. I've never used reflect it myself, but it should be similar.
What pops into my mind is a double sided version of 3M dual lock. Simply wrap and go.
Where do you hang your bear bag?
Tony,
My current post height is 6' and the bottom of the 2x4 is just less than 5'6" (next time I'm certain that it will be higher than my forehead.) My 2x4 was 14' and it's buried a couple of...
4 x 6 posts would work if you put a 2x4 crossbar situated vertically between the tops of the posts. I use this setup in my own back yard (my trees are too small). Make sure that the attachment...
It has been a while since my last post ... life getting in the way. At any rate, I find myself faced with an issue that I would like some advice on.
The tarp that I've made (earlier in this...
A quick stitch in the end returns would be one way to stop it from working loose. Neat idea ... going to play with this a little. Ah, the possibilities ... if both cords were hollow core, the inner...
Now that's hardcore ... you have just proven that the lack of a thread injector is no excuse for not doing DIY projects. Well done.
Hang angle looks OK to me, but pictures can sometimes be...
After getting my hammock I found that all the nieces and nephews wanted to play in it. An assortment of bright colored 126"x60" tablecloths from tableclothsfactory.com with double wrap larks head...
Some of America's greatest minds gave away designs for their inventions because they believed that it was the right thing to do. Benjamin Franklin made public the design for the Franklin stove and...
I don't use D-rings, but there again I don't use hardly any hardware at all. I do use sacrificial continuous loops when I need to pull cordage through to protect the grosgrain loops and avoid the...
I use a strand out of a Cat5 ethernet wire (leave the plastic coating on) when I splice mason twine. Anything smaller would need ultra-nimble fingers to get splices done.
In my experience, those punched holes can have really sharp edges. A few moments with a small file may be in order. At any rate, keep an eye on your ropes/cordage.
Well done.
As promised ... DIY UQ ready to use.

Thanks for all of the encouragement everyone ... it really builds the confidence as I look toward the next step (TQ/UQ).
I tried to grab a couple of pics for you curlymaple42, but the wind was...
I finally saved enough pennies and made the order to get the fabric and supplies to make my own complete DIY hammock setup.
I started with a simple gathered end 11' hammock made from 1.7 Robic XL...
Awesome ... thanks. You wouldn't want to trade some of those mosses and ferns for some sagebrush, rocks, and cacti would you? The places that you and I hang are worlds apart.

I agree 100% on the HYOH mentality. I do things very different than many of you and I know that my way is the best way. Put more correctly it is the best way for me. It is so easy to misinterpret...
Is there a reason why virtually all tarps have the seam running the length of the ridgeline? Why not across the middle? I'm in the process of putting together a 10 x 12 rectangular tarp and would...
My original setup had a whoopie sling ridgeline. I didn't think that I moved it that often or that much. I needed a piece of amsteel for another project so I converted the whoopie to a long dogbone...
A possibility to counteract some of the end to end wobble would be to add paracord or whoopie sling cross brace from the top corners to the feet on the opposite ends. Put it on the side you are least...
I've used regular plastic pony beads and have only broke one (slammed in car door.) For the ultimate in durability, I've used 1/8" brass and zinc plated steel nuts (a little on the heavy side if...
I use 6' whoopies and 6' tree straps and haven't had a problem. I generally use the tree strap and a slippery Becket hitch to the loop on my hammock unless the span is long or the trees are large. ...
Love the dutch oven bag ... another project on the short list. Do you have anything inside so the legs don't poke through?
I generally use a Beckett hitch from my tree straps directly to the CL in my hammock, but for those big trees or long spans, I have a set of whoopie slings in my hammock bag. I use the larks head...

What I was envisioning was an anchor within the area of the tripod. If the anchor is there, then the force vector moves outward really quickly without the ridgepole to take the horizontal...
I found braided mason twine at HomeDepot that can be spliced like zing-it or amsteel. Not all braided mason line can be spliced so pick up a sample before you buy it and make sure. I make 4'...
I'm seeing a square 12x12 in my future ... only $60 + shipping ...
I have Costco Down Throw UQ (no mods) and TQ (sewn footbox) and I'm good to 42 - 40°F with little or no breeze. If I double them up (2 TQ and 2 UQ) it starts to get chilly around 35°F or so. Almost...
Dave Canterbury is putting a youth outdoors program together and shows how to make a hammock from a cotton bedsheet in this video. He got into it, and it held him, but it's obviously not big enough...
I use the knot that zip ties "replaced." A good tutorial can be found here. Use method 2.
I tie it with braided mason twine and have had excellent results. Don't over tighten, it gives you the...
It's a good idea, but I wouldn't use a pulley because if the deviation point is able to slide, there are situations where the force vector will make the tripod tip over anyway. Remember, even though...
Just completing cutting and hemming your latest project, then seeing a better idea on the forum. Naturally, what you've completed is incompatible with that idea.
I did exactly this in my treeless back yard. Difficult digging (rocks the size of bowling balls), so the 8' long 4x4's are only about 24" in the ground. That left a nice 6' above ground to hang on....
I would echo Mike's and Shug's comments as well. The DIY section here is awesome and Shug's videos on YouTube are the things that legends are made of (watch them with your daughter and she will be...

It's an honor to converse with you ... your videos were a large part of getting me interested in hammocks.
The first occurrence I'm sure that the stick that I chose as a toggle just wasn't...
Being the "ample" person that I am (280# ±), I have had the toggle in a Marlin-spike hitch fail on me twice. In both cases I had tied it properly and was "on the knot, not the toggle." The first...
I gave up on hardware. It always seemed to bend, slip, get lost, or have a sharp edge somewhere that scarred up my straps (or even worse my fingers.)
I learned to tie a slippery Becket hitch and...
A co-worker of mine used to work at a school for wayward youth. The type that takes teens out of an urban environment and teaches them about farming and country life while getting them away from the...
First, a little background. I don't consider myself a knot expert, however, my library contains multiple well read books on knots, rigging, splices, braids, paracord crafts/art, leatherwork and...
