I love my Chillax from Costco. Soft, easy to set up, and I even dig the suspension that came with it.
You couldn't have been the first....
I switch a few times during the night. I am a side sleeper and it depends on how tired I am. It seems like the blood and gravity settle. Then I switch . It takes practice and balance but I can...

Look at my avitar. There's a badge. It may not be official, however. Great Job
I was wondering if hanging was possible at Carolina Beach. Will you be at a state park? Trees?
Is that a DIY tarp? Looks like Tyvek?
The wost part about hanging in Durham, NC (no, not the crime) are the dogs. You can't get far enough away from someone's dog barking at 3 o'clock in the morning. Not to mention the occasional stray...
My worst was on a concrete porch. There was not much light, I was in a big hurry and did not inspect the marlin hitch. I hung for about 10 seconds then it felt like my butt bone got shoved into my...
I use a Chillax Double Hammock from Costco. I sleep in it every night like a baby. I have a few sill nylons but I prefer the cheaper Chillax. Best $25.00 I ever spent!!
Plan a trip. Get others involved. Trade tips and tricks. Get great ideas. That's what I do with them.
It's funny....when you build a new tarp, it never rains no matter how much you wish it would. Great Job. How about some blueprints!
Welcome aboard!
I was a ground / tent camper for years. It took a few trips and alot of trial and error as a DIY hammok hanger but I have not looked back. This forum is the place you need to be. There is a ton of...
Well I tried it. The material is great, light weight and cheap. I mada a mistake by cutting it into two 4' lengths. Bad math considering that my tarp is about 11' in length. I should have bought...
Welcome from Durham!!
Any word floating around on the 2017 Smoke Butt hang at Falls Lake in Durham? I joined HF just a few weeks too late to make it this year.
Troop 405 in Durham, NC, One scoutmaster, one adult leader, and two scouts prefer hammocks. The other six scouts like hard work, long setup and pack up times, and waking up with sore joints.
Don't take up golf. Thank goodness for hamock campers if one set of trees doesn't work...move to the next set. Just don't forget to look up for widow makers!!!
I have been known to keep a spray bottle of water to mist the hammock in the summer months. It works pretty well with a slight breeze but that meand getting down to the skivies, no top quilt or bag,...
So would a hammock's ridgeline pe a part of the suspension?
I found something at Lowes called Pipe Sock. It's seamless, black, tight mesh 4" x 10'. The cost was around $6. It covers black 4" drain pipe so dirt does not get in. Its works well too.
Go to Lowes in the plumbing section. Find the 4" black drain pipe. There is a black 4" tight mesh sleeve that is 10' long. It's about $6. It makes pretty good skins and there is no seam.
Great Idea!
Great Job.
Hello from Durham where the crime rate is super low....out in the woods!
Brilliant!!!
Quite well. They are brass (from Lowes) and do not fray the shock chord
I have a question. I live 5 minutes from your location. Can I come in and purchase or is it internet only?
My daughter would LOVE this. Did RSBTR do this for you?
I used to use a piece of 2' wide by 6' long Reflextix from Lowes. I found that you can get static shock in the winter. It also slides around a lot making for a few uncomfortable cold spots at...
I love the DIY approach. I bought bug netting from Michael's for next to nothing, cut it to fit my ridgeline, then duct taped washers to the bottoms and corners for weights. It packs down great and...
Troop 405 in Durham, NC. It's slowly growing on them. Once they see how fast our setup and take down is they express interest.
French Press hanging from the ridge line.........works for me, I will fight a bear for my coffee.
I'd buy that off the shelf. Looks great!!
Welcome from Durham. I believe I have seen every video on hammock camping ever made. There is an entire community here to help you.
I bought a Traveler box of coffee from Starbucks. When the coffee was gone I got rid of the box, took out the bladder, washed it out and folded it up. It packs down ultra small and ultra light but...
But wow....that clean, fresh linen smell......totally worth it. If this idea takes off, there could be an entire segment of market for the Eco crowd. I would try to make a sleeping mat first to...
Looks very comfy. I wonder if Blaze Orange Camo is available for hunting season. With my luck I wouldn't find my way back to camp. "Can't find the hammock!"
Thanks for the responses, guys and gals. I will keep an eye out for them.
My scouts will soak their ENO hammocks in water at summer camp, wring them out, twirl them around in the air, hang 'em up, then get in them to sleep. I tried this once and it does work. You will be...
Hello also from Durham, NC! I found this site just in time to learn I missed a hang at Falls Lake. Any news on the 5th Anual Smoke Butt Hang?
Glad to hear your trip went well:D
I do agree that you should practice your own setup over and over, no matter what your setup is. To trust it is to know that it will not fail. This takes repetition. Also something I enjoy.
Full length. Better to err on safe than sorry. I don't like having to decide on weather my shoulder should be warm or my calves.
Every other week I check my local costco for the unicorn of DIY gear...the elusive Down Throw. Is this an item that is not needed here in the south? How does one obtain this item? I can't seem to...
I am a scoutmaster for troop 405 in Durham, NC.
I used a cheap 40 degree bag with grommets on the corners. I ran shock cord through the short ends and looped a single spring hook on each cord. I hook it directly on the ends of the hammock and it...
I sleep indoors in my hammock now and I love it. I installed two eye bolts (into the studs) and keep a good sag. I use a top quilt and a body pillow, sleep on my side and I am out like a light. I...
