Great news! I'm overdue for a hang and this is one of my favorites.
I leave the excess mesh and it gets folded into the end seams. That ensures each chamber is independent.

Dutch ware has a massive tarp that looks like a Conestoga wagon!

I ALWAYS overstuff any quilt. Paranoid about down shifting, shrinking between cleanings and picking up moisture on trips, either from weather or me.
Not to overstuff correlates to laboratory...
If you camp other than during summer in Pennsylvania, I would recommend a tarp with doors. An 11' tarp is most desirable, not 12'. Silpoly is probably the best bang for buck when considering...
Great thread for folks new to winter hsmmocking and as a reminder to all of us. We've already seen 16° and had a few snow showers. Nothing sticking yet except for the higher elevations.

I roll my tarp after pulling the stakes, but leaving the ridgeline suspension intact. Simply lay each guy line in the roll as you progress.

Packed only in snakeskin and carried in outside pocket or strapped to outside, depending on the backpack. Wet or dry doesn't matter, stakes stored in a side pocket. I always want to be able to deploy...
As others have said, not worth it unless you're certain of good weather. In even a light, vertical shower the asym tarp may keep the inside of your hammock dry, but you can't push the hammock aside...
Begin with 1.5-2.2 oz. silnylon. Waterproof and not so thin that it is difficult to work with.

Now that's what I call camo!! [emoji106]

"car beater"... I love it. Gonna start carrying some in my pack. Actually, this is what I'm calling them from now on... Thank you! [emoji2]

For a more comfortable sitting position, double the hammock over before sitting. That puts the edge seams behind you and the fold under your knees.
Have you actually measured the hammock length? I...
Hammockforums folks have been my extended family. It's been sad year that getting together has been so curtailed.

Sadly I'll miss this hang. Playing it safe these days while in cancer treatment. Life is a bit dull these days and could use a great hang.
Congrats to Ali!

I've seen this awesome tarp, on Dutch's hammock no less. Sort of like hanging inside a quonset hut!

I definitely spray my bugnet! And hammock and clothing.

I don't treat my DCF tarp any differently from my other tarps.

I run 1/8" shock cord only through the length of the underquilt, measured when the cord is relaxed. The remaining distance to the hammock ends from all 4 corners of the quilt is 1.7oz Zing-it (or any...
I also roll grosgrain into the rolled hem.
Thanks for cueing up this long lived thread. I looked back to the beginning. Those posters back in 2010 were the old-timers of HammockForums! I miss a lot of those folks.

Hexon 1.0 would be very stretchy at your weight. I'm a bit below you and find it too stretchy. Plus, 1.0 fabrics have been known to fail at your weight. The MTN fabrics inherently have much less...
Much smaller, about 2mm. I splice 1.7mm Zing-it with no problems. You just need the smaller wire size for the task.

I have tried many but can't seem to get away from dynaglide whoopies with Kelvar tree straps and a continuous loop on the hammock end

I agree with cougarmeat, a wet tarp will stay wet until deployed to dry again. A wet solid snakeskin, especially a silnylon one, stays wet forever unless turned inside out... a real pain. Snakeskins...
I've gone to Mountain 1.7 from Ripstopbytheroll to get rid of the stretching. Very pleased with it.

I have hung my hammock many times using the small ti loop aliens. The ones with the open circle. I always made sure there was a soft landing under me, LOL.

Horrible news! Structures or trees, hammocks can develop a great deal of sideways pull. It scares me to see tight suspensions, even among our group. These piano wire tight single line suspensions...
There's a reason shock cord is preferred for doors instead of rigid line, LOL.
I deploy my doors only as needed for weather. I usually have them tied together from each end of the hammock. I tie...
Maine? Probably can't find enough space for a hammock between trees, LOL.

About a half hour drive or so north of you are several private campgrounds, including Meadowbrook (near Phippsburg) where we have our annual Lighthouse & Lobster Hang.

I always cut 6"-12" off the bottom of my Fronkey style bugnets, depending on how wide the fabric is.

A 20 liter roll top dry bag. My tarp is in snakeskin and packed on outside of my pack to deploy first.

I leave my underquilt, top quilt and net attached together. Even my inflatable pillow (deflated) is packed all together.

Yep, gaps are the problem 9 out of 10 times. It's really, really helpful to have someone of your size lay in the hammock while you adjust the UQ suspension from the outside.

Warmer bottom quilt. You can always throw extra clothing on top of you to supplement your top quilt. Any clothing you lay directly on will be crushed, thereby rendered ineffective for insulation.

Welcome! Nice setup for first try. The pup definitely seems satisfied with it!

Snakeskin! Keep the tarp in snakeskin until you secure the ridgeline tie-outs to the two trees. Then peel back the snakeskin and I stake the windward side first, then finally the leeward side.

Enjoyable read, at your expense. Sounds like you have a good attitude! Crooked stitches are fine.
Practice on smaller scraps. This thin Nylon is a different beast. It takes some time to get the hang...
Congrats on your first night off the ground! While ultimately comfortable, hammocks do have a bit of a learning curve. The biggest challenge is usually the underquilt adjustment, so you're not alone...
I'm lookin forward to Harold Parker myself, although the future of everything is shaky now [emoji53]
