Amazon carries a ton of split rings in numerous sizes. I believe ugq uses a 12mm size. If you wanted to continue using them with the tato connector you could buy a larger size there

I have not had the same issue. Tightening the shockcord a bit has held mine up with no issues. That's a quick and easy idea you had.

I was on that trail about 15 years ago during a very cold snap in winter. It got down to -5 that weekend and the river was frozen over. Awesome trail.

I usually either wear chacos or salomon water shoes with a pair of water proof socks. The socks are really there to help prevent blisters as they do get wet.
