Hobbit and I are taking off tomorrow morning for an overnight hike in the area. We'll meet you on Friday!
I remember the wind also. Not too cold and my tarp stayed in place but I dreamt of airport runways ;)
We're thinking of doing a joint meal for the first night, like last year? What could I...
Welcome to the forum! I'm in State College. Where are you located?
Done a fair amount of biking on the Katy trail. Really gorgeous, at least the eastern half (haven't done the other). Bluffs on one side and wetlands or the river on the other. If I still lived in...
I'll be there (barring any unforeseen circumstances). Looking forward to it!
I voted for the 17th but it doesn't matter a lot to me except that the next weekend won't work for me. But earlier is fine.
Love to go to another one. Had a great time last year meeting the other hangers. Looking forward to seeing them again and meeting new attendees also.
I don't think that the choice of tarp determines the choice of stake. For general purpose use I have found that the MSR groundhogs are the best. ...
I'm a very satisfied bridge hammock user. At home in my bed I tend to be a side sleeper and I do move around a bit in the night. But in the bridge I feel so comfortable on my back that I don't end...
I use those in the summer when the overnight temps might get down into the 60s. They work great because they are fairly wide and weigh very little. Got mine at Walmart for around $3 I think.
Hobbit and I did this hike just after Easter. We encountered LOTS OF RAIN! However it made for really spectacular waterfalls. We hiked south to north, starting on the Bohen Run Trail (which merges...
Nice pictures! Looks like a gorgeous location.
Let me try and diagnose the problem and point to a possible solution.
In principle pads work well to keep you warm in a hammock. But they don't...
I was in JoAnn's fabrics the other day and noticed that their foam padding was on sale. In particular I was eyeing the 27" wide rolls of 1/2" foam.
This is OCF so it would compress under you if...
Welcome! There's good hanging and hiking available in your neck of the woods. Perhaps we'll hang there together sometime.
For my bridge I got some tent poles from quest outfitters. The ones you want are the .625 18 inch poles. I think that's what Grizz uses as well. Also get 4 endtips for them.
These poles will...
PM sent on thinlight pad.
I sure did enjoy meeting all of you at the hang! Had a great time. Let's do it again some time.
Woo hoo! The day is finally here! I'll see you all tomorrow!
Gotta pack first of course. Just came from outside and wondered if I should bring my shorts and sandals ;) Actually I hear it's...
I just moved from Missouri and have done many wonderful miles on the Ozark trail. Many thanks for your efforts there. Hammocking in the Ozarks is awesome.
The sheet is almost certainly too small. You really need a piece of material about 10 feet long. Get 3 or 4 yards of non-stretchy material from the $1 bin at Walmart (or somewhere) and try that. ...
Howdy from another PA hanger!
By all means get up out of the mud and into the trees! Much drier and more comfortable!
Thru-hiker probably still has it. I went to buy some 5oz climashield from him the other day and it wasn't listed on his web site. I emailed him and he said that he removed the link because his...
I keep checking the forecast and at the moment they are calling for freezing rain followed by snow. Personally I think that sounds great. Maybe I'm weird but I feel kind of disappointed when I put...
I'm flattered that you think I'm still a student! If my picture were blown up a bit more you'd see all the grey hairs. I'm actually a professor.
I realize that the hang is still a few weeks away and so a lot could happen between now and then in terms of snow but I'm wondering what kind of depth of snow we should be expecting. I don't own...
I don't think the quietness reflects lack of interest. I think we are all thinking about how we are going to survive the cold! For my part I'm making a new underquilt just for the occasion!
I had a question about cooking. We'll have a fire and I'm bringing some Bratwurst for the first night but I don't have a grill to set over the fire. There are other ways to cook them of course. ...
I plan on showing up fairly early to help with the fire and so forth so that when others arrive for the group meal the stuff that needs to be cooked will already be cooked for ya.
I volunteer to bring the brauts. I'm assuming we'll have a good place to cook them up? Not really the kind of thing you can cook over an alcohol stove. :)
I've been thinking of making myself a...
I'll be attending. Looking forward to it!
Like several other members I bought a Golite Ultra 20 back in 2008. There have been a number of complaints about how little down was put in that quilt (the new version apparently has more down). ...
Nice job on the video. Looking forward to part 2!
The short answer is yes, to a point
If the ship moves side to side the occupant of the hammock will not feel it. The hammock swings to allow the occupant to remain in the same point in space. ...
If you want to do some Missouri hiking then the Current River section of the Ozark Trail is really nice. Lots of Hickory in the area and the smell is just heavenly. Check the website for maps and...
I often go without a bug net. The truth is that you only need a bug net for the early evening hours. Mosquitos stop flying once it get quite late. I recall a hike I took last summer where I got...
Welcome! Always glad to see another Missourian join the ranks of the "hammock enlightened"!
For a first hammock I recommend doing it yourself. Don't worry about bells and whistles like mosquito...
I try not to put too much weight on my kids when we backpack. Maybe 10 pounds at the most. So a day pack is probably all that is needed. No need for any frame or hip belt. I use the REI Flash 18...
I like my Gossamer Gear packs. Lightweight and priced right. I use a G5 in the summer and a Mariposa in the winter. They are made of very light materials (1.1 sil) so you have to be a little...
I have a similar set of quilts that my wife made for me and I agree with the temp ratings for the top quilts. For the bottom quilts I might not go quite that low. My 5osy climashield underquilt was...
I'd like to put in a plug for my local favorite, the Ozark Trail. It is a named trail but seems to be under the radar for most people. The continuous part of the trail is over 200 miles so it fits...
I have an equinox 8x10 tarp (the one they sell at campmor called the ultralight backpacking tarp) that I was trying the other day in the snow. After just 1 inch it failed. Now this was a wet snow...
I've been thinking of something similar for some time for my bridge. I think this would be great way to go.
I like my bridge better than gathered end hammocks because in a gathered end hammock my head is at a funny angle when I sleep that bothers me. In the bridge my neck is straight (as are my back and...
Ditto what Cannibal said.
The problem with a CCF pad is that it doesn't breath at all so any moisture that leaves your skin gets trapped between you and the pad. The same thing would happen on...
My wife made me a UQ from 5 osy Climashield XP and I've used it very comfortably into the mid to high 30s. I tried it at 20 and it wasn't enough. I don't think I'd take it below freezing without...
I find that even in the summer (when the temps here in the Ozarks only get down into the 60s at night) the bug net isn't really necessary. The bugs that are interested in me (mosquitoes etc) stop...
If it's only going to be in the 60s (not 60 but like 65) then a cheap windshield sun visor will work. Those things can fold down really small and they weigh very little.
Hey, you live in a really great place! Thanks for the video!
Don't worry about "close to the ground". If you touch the ground then that's a problem. But as long as you are off the ground you'll get all the benefits of the hammock. I hang my bridge pretty...
My 5 osy XP quilt wasn't enough for 20 degrees. I think I'd use it down to 32 degrees.
