Any chance there's 0 degree or lower versions on the horizon? I like the idea of UP insulated Top/Under quilts for winter use.

I'll take em. PM Sent.
I'm from RI, down in Middletown. The closest place I've camped around here is out in Western Mass. There's some good stuff out there in the Berkshires. For me, it's worth the 3 hour drive up to...
How about run the CRL through the Drings on the tarp so that the CRL supports the weight and the tarp connectors only have to hold tension. Looking at the pictures it seems like that would buy you a...
This is the method that I use, surprised I don't hear it mentioned more often. I love it. The weight of a dutch hook and tarp flyz is about as negligible as it gets. And man is it fast.
I think I love this idea. Definitely gonna try it the next time I go out.

I use the little stuff sack from my titanium spoon. Long handled version from Amazon came with a skinny orange stuff sack. I get 6 stakes and 4 guy lines plus a small amount of extra zing it in...
+1 on the 0°, 20°, and 40° TQs.
FWIW, I also use 0°, 20° and 40° UQs, although the only full length one I use is the 0°, the others are 3/4 lengths.
So we're headed to the gorge tomorrow for a couple days, you guys leave some chili for us or do you figure the bears got it?

I use a UQP anytime I'm camping in the snow - I don't know that it adds warmth so much, I use it as cheap insurance against blowing snow.
I have been playing with the question of overcover...
That's cool, were you out the night of the thunderstorm? We were at Garfield Pond that night and it was wicked cool with all the lightning.
Sorry not to threadjack - I guess this goes to show...
We did the Pemi loop last year on July 4th weekend with 40° TQs and 40° 3/4 UQs. The coldest temps we saw were in the upper 30s. My wife (who is a cold sleeper) was a little chilly the second...
Here's me rocking an 11' Dutch netless, 0° UGQ TQ/UQ, and 11' HG Winter Palace. There's also a 2qzq UQP under there.

If you convert your sleeping bag to a UQ, what do you use for a TQ in your hammock?

Sparrow is asymmetric, you have to specify lay when you order. Chameleon is like a reversable Sparrow.

Watch out, I think that can cause prostate problems. Best get it taken care of post haste.
I was going to suggest benadryl, but whiskey works too. Both work even better.

Welcome from the south coast of RI! Sure hear ya about the hammocking and bad back, I think a lot of folks do.
So..10-35lbs and between a 40-75 liter pack?
I think it's individual and dependent on what gear you have available and what you bring with you. Have down quilts and a lightweight tarp...
Just to throw my 2 cents in, I have both UGQ quilts and HG quilts and you can't go wrong with either. All my UQs are the standard width (although I do get my TQs wide) - I'm 6'4", 235lbs, although...
I don't see why not, but I don't have any first hand experience doing it, Ive always gotten plenty of venting from just moving my top quilt a bit.

I use a 40° 3/4 length in the summer in NH. The reason I do it though is because I tend to do a lot of mileage in the summer since I can get away with carrying a way lighter pack. I think in your...
I don't have a chameleon, but I do have a sparrow and a Dutch netless. The dutch netless was the second hammock I bought (the first was an ENO knockoff from Amazon just to see how I liked sleeping...
Lol, I promise I will. We're doing the trip to the gorge as part of a larger road trip with the family - my birthday is next month and the wife is planning on picking me up a new camcorder in time...
Interesting - for me, given the choice I'd rather climb up the hardest hill than down it. My knees seem happier that way. I'd read that the steepest trail was PinchIn, that was what made me want to...
How so? My thinking was that it would be easier to do RJ while I was fresh at the beginning rather than having to do the big climb to the road at the end.

That drought monitor site is a GREAT resource!

I read that the fire ban had been lifted, and long range forecasts make it seem like it's going to be wet while we're there. Seems like once we get across RJ and down to the river, we'll be OK for...
I went on there and downloaded the new maps and GPS coordinates. I had Kinkos print me out a few 11x17 copies - I was amazed at how cheap they did the prints for.
I've been lurking and reading...
Outrageously excited to see her.
Gotcha. I'm going to take gqgeek's advice and stash water at the top of CC and carry enough to get me down RJ. Will plan on that water source being dry or almost dry, but I'll report back...
Yeah, the thought was for a quick exit on the final day, it's usually how we do it. Our last day is almost like a race back to the car - generally we have a long drive ahead of use so rather than...
Thanks for chiming in, Shug. I got a bunch of information off LinvilleGorge.net - grabbed the maps and the trail info.
We're pretty experienced hikers and have done a lot of miles up in the...
So we're heading to Linville Gorge at the end of February (going to miss the group hang by a day, unfortunately) and I wanted to post my plans here for some of the more experienced gorge rats to...
Dang, gonna miss this by a day. We're going to be hiking in the morning of the 20th - our first trip into the gorge. Staying with relatives in Mars Hill the 2 days prior. Sounds like an awesome...
Sing it brother!
I AM A GEAR FIDDLER!
I have spent way more money than is necessary on this hobby, but enjoyed every penny of it.
I think it's like a car - you can buy a Honda Civic for...
Yeah was a good time I dig playing in the snow and there was plenty of it! Tarp is a HG Winter Palace
Kev
No coyotes, but the trees were crackin' all night long.
Kev
No, I headed out east toward bondcliff, then past where the bondcliff trail heads north up the cliffs - there's an old, unmaintained trail and a removed bridge. I played around over there a bit then...
Hi all,
I live in southern RI where we focus more on boating than hiking - but have been hiking/camping since I was a kid. Made the switch from tents to hammocks about a year ago and it has...
So my wife and I are planning on doing a winter summit of some of the peaks around the Pemi Wilderness in NH for my birthday in February - being the good husband that I am (and looking for excuses to...
