I have seen a youtube video, can't find it now will try when I get home, of someone using the clear packaging tape to fix pin holes in cuben. He used a piece on each side of the tarp and it was water...
Can I join you? I come of age at the end of your trip on the 27th. Though I will be turning 30 not 13 lol. My wife and I have been thinking of coming of age things for our kids. The thing I came up...
Doesn't have any dwr but I bet it breathes good.
Ken
Lile this?

You also need to add the tarp and bugnet weights for a fair comparison. Not saying that you can't get a lighter weight or a setup that is equal in weight you just need to count everything needed to...
Do it! Do it meow...
Ken
That video is the first thing that came to my mind! lol
Ken
This has some merit I think. You could mitigate the air gaps with some down draft tubes. Also possibly have 1/4" - 1/2" UQ built into the side that snugs against the hammock. In essence using the...
HAHA I think I will be in the same predicament soon!
Ken
Yes very interested with this!
Ken
Now that is some good advice! With my little ones starting in Cub Scouts and Daisies this is information I will be keeping on hand for later. For now just day hikes when we can.
Ken
This is a good question, since I'm looking at starting at the top with a HG standard with doors. Not to derail but I'm curious if silnylon gets rigid at these temps?
Ken
Welcome! I'm originally from upstate NY as well, Mohawk valley. Currently in MD. I try to make it back home to visit family often. Just hiked bald mountain up near Old Forge with the kids, they loved...
PU coated nylon tarps are really inexpensive. I don't know if it's worth the effort. 10x12 for $60

Ken
I'm down with that!
I'm looking at the Hammock Gear Standard with doors, also because I can get it in camo too!
Ken
Welcome! I'm just south of you at Ft Meade, also looking into getting into hammocks! Lots of info on here, people are friendly and very informative too!
Ken
So who is paying the sherpa to carry over 700 lbs of tree strap into the woods for these 4.5 mile apart trees? lol
Anyways that is cool, I think I will be making a purchase soon! tax season is...
So how many trees can you wrap 9 miles of webbing around?
Ken
Well once the tarp is done you don't need to wait until it stops raining
I like the idea of a tent corralling the kids, I have 3 little ones myself. However, I'm very sure a zipper or 2 won't stop them lol.
Ken
I'll be watching this closely! I don't have a hammock yet and am kind of wondering if I will or not.
I can see me bringing it to have more room in the tent for the family. But also not taking it...
I hope so! Though getting the time to go out is tough, have a 10 mo, 7 yo, and a 5 yo running around the house lol. Between that and the fact my wifes work schedule and my work schedule don't have...
The only job of the mineral spirits is to thin the silicone for easy application I think. Also so you don't have huge globs all over, just a nice thin even layer. I may be wrong though.
Ken
I just reread your post, are you sure it's PU poly? 10oz is the normal weight for a good cotton canvas. Don't know much about PU poly, which to me sounds waterproof already since PU is a cheaper way...
I'll second Bumbler's idea. Though the beeswax will make the canvas very stiff in the cold.
But also add in something I saw on a youtube video.

Yeah I don't know what is made of silnylon that you would be spraying. Regardless the reason it is used on clothes and gear instead of skin is that it degrades and gets absorbed so it doesn't even...
Without any idea on what it is being used for, sounds like not at all, hard to tell you.
Sounds like you are trying to keep the best insulation as a commodity to be traded or sold later. If that...
Personally I would go with Z-Lite because you can always put it on the outside of your pack. That is if you can sleep comfortably with just a foam pad, I can't if the ground is hard enough.
Ken
Count me in! I have learned a lot from here too! Even if my dad gets me the late xmas present of a hammock my kids or wife would love to do this too!
Ken
Yeah those Blunt umbrellas look sweet. I like that they can be inverted without beig damaged.
Ken
Welcome from MD! I can't wait to get back up to the ADK this summer with my dad. It's hard taking leave to go up there though.
Ken
Wow so for some reason I've had asym and sym mixed up in my head. Oh I have been eyeing that page for a while now lol. I'm getting a late xmas present from my dad and it will be either a free bird or...
So a free bird will be completely asym then right?
Ken
Yeah where next would be my question if I was already geared out!
Ken
So I have it in my head that I must have reflective guylines because I don't want to trip and I want to be able to find my rig at night after utilizing the bushes. I have also liked the tarp guy...
I remember seeing a thread not too long ago about taking a cheap dollar store shower loofa and taking it apart. Apparently it's a tube of plastic netting that is about the right size for a tarp. No...
Yup between the trails near here and the times I go home to visit family I will be able to have quite a selection of places to test out hammocks once I get the full set up. Like I said still looking...
Hello all!
I hope to be a future hanger! It sounds more comfortable than the last time I camped in a tent and woke up sore. Originally from Upstate New York, currently in Maryland stationed at Ft...
How much extra was the customization for this? That looks great! I have been eyeing their quilts since I started reading these forums!
Ken
I see that A-TACS FG is no longer on the site. did you run out? will it return? I was hoping to get one once I get tax return money...
Ken
I'm in! I know I don't get a choice, but would really like one of those books lol.
Ken
That being said this person should have stated that in the beginning. But I like their stuff and would like to try some of it out. Probably will when I have the money lol.
Ken
I would venture to guess this person is affiliated since they claim to be from Waco, TX which is 1.5 hrs from Austin, TX which is where Kammock HQ is. However, that is just a guess.
Ken
A relatively small piece of Tyvek would work well for that. Also makes a great place to set stuff down on during the night, place to dump out things from your backpack to not lose things, and keeps...
Darn, thanks for the quick reply though!
Ken
Will the UCR's be offered again soon? Tax returns will be coming soon and I will have some disposable money lol!
Ken
Also, very interested in something like is shown in post 19 in this thread:...
Wish this was the new illume fabric. I've been debating either a 20* or 40*. Real nice though!!
Or use it after shaving. It may sting if you cut yourself but it will slow bleeding, prevent infection, and tighten your skin.
Grab a space blanket. Don't even have to use it unless you get really cold. For a more long term solution I am actually looking at the columbia Omni-heat sleeping bag liner as a similar but more...
