jabraso... nice!
Also a fair point, and I agree. I used to try to do everything myself (auto repair, home repair, DIY, etc), but as I have gotten older I find myself outsourcing more. It is a totally valid tradeoff,...
I have heard that before, but always thought it was a false argument to factor in your time. It would only apply if you were taking unpaid time off of work to complete a DIY project, or taking a...
Not to derail the thread, but do tell! I hope nobody was injured!
PS - I have used alcohol and a cotton swab on silpoly. It worked, but it was within seconds of making a stray mark. Not sure if it...
Bummer! Buy hey, if you are going to have your hopes crushed it is best to have it overwith in 5 minutes. As opposed to waiting until your tarp shreds itself in a big, gusty downpour. :scared:
I...
I would try having your head be a little higher than your feet. Every time I have slept with my head as the low point I have woken up with a headache too.
Cool idea!
One thing I don't understand is why all of the crosswise seams are ripped out. In the instructions it says this will allow it to loft higher, but won't it also allow the down to collect...
"The Thousand Mile Summer" by Colin Fletcher.
Being of sound mind and body, I hereby declare that I will take the Prodigy.
I just had a flashback to the 70s!
That first picture looks like what's in my barn after a black snake has been there!
Thanks for the info. You all talked me into it.
Oh man. I am glad I asked!
Paul-
Is this sale good for the entire month of February, or is it a "while supplies last" kind of thing?
Thanks!
My favorite color of the ones you showed in the first post is olive. I would like to see a darker olive color (olive drab), coyote, and charcoal gray added as options. I prefer earth tones over...
You got that right. A friend of mine was killed a few years back while he was collecting firewood in the woods behind his house. Apparently a large limb broke off of a pine tree that he was standing...
I am trying to decide on what under quilt to get. I like the idea of the Jarbidge… it is light, warm, simple, and cheap. And as an added bonus, you can annoy the pedantic among us by calling it a...
I have been on many other forums with "for sale" sections, and I have to say that "for sale" section in this one is by far the most heavily moderated. Most of the other ones just leave it up to the...
I will take the Golite cover.
I will take the Golite cover.
-20 degrees aint nothing compared to the frosty chill of the complaining wife. :scared:
I am interested in the Jarbidge, but don't see tan on their website. Perhaps that color was discontinued? Any chance you could post a picture?
Nothin' better than eatin' a sammich in a hammick.
While I am far from a knot expert, there is a certain beauty to a well tied knot that is used for its intended purpose. The gadgetry, while ingenious, will never have that same appeal for me.
One thing that would be significantly worse in a hammock is the step voltage. In a hammock you are part of a ground circuit that spans 20 feet or more. Much bigger potential differences are possible....
That one actually came from experience. Waking up at 3am in a puddle is no fun! :) Fortunately for me is was a warm night.
One other thing…. if the wind is howling and the tarp is flapping madly, the pole could actually lift off the ground and come out of place. The tension of the guy lines will help to prevent that, but...
Very cool, but you might want to test it in the wind and rain. One thing that might not be good is the ground sheet. The rain coning off of the tarp and/or driving in underneath it will collect on...

It is a risk, but the drive to/from the trailhead is probably a bigger one. On the rare case where lightning is close, you can always get out of the hammock, put on your poncho, and get away from any...
Check out the DuraCord Pawley's Island hammock. Warning: it is not cheap.

Ha ha!
I am very far from an expert, but one piece of advice I have is… let the machine do the work for you. It is ok to guide the fabric with your hands, but resist the urge to try to "muscle"...
I probably sleep the best when I am in the woods. The sounds are very comforting and soothing to me. It is like coming home. But that wasn't always the case.
When I was a kid a friend told me...
I'm not sure what the OP's motivation for no-hem is, but I'm sure there are many people who are afraid to open that can o' worms because they don't know how to sew. Well, in the time it took to read...
Well that depends on the sentence. "I think I will ditch work and lay in the hammock all day". :)
You will freeze your tail!
Good news. I got a letter in the mail confirming my membership. Yay!
Ok will do. I guess the way I will find out is if a FTC newsletter or Backpacker magazine shows up in my mailbox. I'll post back when/if that happens.
Update: I tried to contact the Director of the FTC about my membership and still heard nothing. It has been a month and a half. Disappointing! Then I decided to risk $30 and just order the guidebook...
Heh heh. Well, I voted for a hex tarp. Mine is SilPoly. Good compromise between weight, coverage, and cost. I could add removable doors later if I want.
In a rainstorm, I would prefer the one that I'm under!
Swampfox… I have started modifying your spreadsheet to plan my own trip. Wow… you are an Excel wizard. Once I started playing with it I see how ingenious it is. Thanks again for posting it.
Looks like y'all ate pretty good! And the castle was amazing. We just don't have stuff like that here in the states. Thanks for sharing.
I have heard that the foxholes dug by the 101st Airborne...
Nice job!!!!
While the difference is the same, the percent change is much smaller between 5.0 and 6.0.
Cool idea! One possible concern is that if the two of you are not equal in weight the lighter one will be further up in the air and may tend to roll toward the middle. If it is indeed a problem maybe...
On RSBTRs website, he lists Climashield Apex weights of 2.5, 3.6, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 oz/yd^2
On Dutchs website, he lists Climashield Apex weights of 2.5, 3.6, 6.0 oz/yd^2
One has 5.0 and the other...
Cool. Good luck with it!
Canvas... maybe. Synthetic… no way.
