Do you have to sign up for permits or just show up and hike? Is there marked trails? Can you camp anywhere or do they have designated spots?
Thanks
Greetings from Oconee County! Did you go to Cumberland? I've dayhiked it but want to backpack it at some point.
PM inbound.
Great story, and congrats! What 75-150 mile stretch would you recommend for a hammocker if they aren't able to through hike the whole trail? Also, what acclimation methods did you use to get your...
As in art, beauty is purely in the eye of the beholder. No right or wrong here, just one dude's opinion. I said finishing at OSP would be anticlimactic because IIRC, there just wasn't much good...
Great trail. You'll have a great time, and you're hiking it the "right" way, IMO (finishing at Oconee would be anticlimatic compared to coming down off Sassafras.
I still say my perfect hammock tarp would be a DCF Thunderfly. In its absence though, the silpoly version is still pretty dang awesome!
Still available.
I got about 68 inches each without stretching too much so it looks like they will work for up to an 11 foot tarp. Thanks.
Going through some gear the other day and forgot I even had these. I think they were thrown in on a tarp I bought used. Long discontinued by HG. I've never used them and doubt they've ever seen the...
Just looking at the number of posts on this forum compared to when I joined, one may draw that conclusion. Or perhaps, hammock camping itself was fairly new at that time so it would stand to reason...
Great video! Being from Ga, it's hard to imagine that style of camping but looks like yall have the hang of it pretty well!
That trail humbled me, for sure!
Great video!
I don't think there is a perfect camp chair. They all have pros and cons and you just need to decided if the pros of any on style outweigh the cons enough to justify its weight and bulk in your...
When I first started out, I didn't want to tie knots on my guylines so I put Dutch Fleaz on the loops attached to my MSR Groundhogs. When I string the tarp, I put the stake in the ground then...
GA, Nc, Sc, TN, FL.
Thank you for posting this! The CT is definitely on my bucket list. I know you haven't finished yet but do recommend N>S or S>N? So other than the 35 mile stretch you mentioned, you had no issues...
Enloe Creek is a great little site but only has a few viable options to hang a hammock. My favorite sites from my BMT hike were 38 Mt. Sterling and Newton Bald. Most of the sites on the Lakeshore...
another vote for 2qzq. I'm sure the other brands are great as well, but when I got mine, 2Q was the only game in town. I don't have any issues carrying it along on possible cold, windy, and/or wet...
camo all the way for me
I like the simplicity of using two, 12 foot straps, 1 inch wide then attaching them to hammock loops with Beckett Hitches as Ralaad mentioned. Just remember when we talk of "straps" they are webbing...
If a reputable company made a Thunderfly or Mountainfly size tarp in DCF, I'd be selling my Palace to get one. It's not just about weight vs the Palace. I just like how the beak doors work compared...
Well played!
Hello HangW! Fellow Georgian here, if you don't mind me asking, where did you go?
They work very very well for me.
So true about Marty being a Southern Gentleman. With each passing year, there are fewer and fewer of those remaining down here. He is missed, indeed. As far as solving the calf ridge, the...
Just curious, what kind of wildlife do you most often encounter in those enchanted woods?
I hate to admit it but I've wasted a lot of money trying to find the latest/greatest UL strap setup. I ditched all of them and have gone to the Dutch Spider/Poly straps and am totally content. My...
Thanks for the invite! I'll be checking the calendar!!
My sentiments exactly. I have a frontloader and it's just way too easy to do in the machine vs any of the hand wash methods I've seen. I can't speak for anyone else but, with an additional rinse in...
Hey, I've got a Netty too! Enjoyed your video. I had never heard of that trail before, now I want to thru-hike it!
Way to go Pete! If you have not already done so, please check out the Youtube videos of SeniorHiker77. He's from Ga and got into backpacking when he was 77 years old. Unfortunately, he's on the...
That Cloud chair is crazy light. You'd probably never even know you had it in your pack.
Like most all backpackers, I like to keep my load as light as practically possible. I do not have the cloud hammock (yet) but do use a 1.0 for most trips. Like Shug mentioned, you can't expect UL...
I have the mini evos from Jeff Meyers that I like-except when it's really cold. Like Otter says, they are difficult to use in cold weather so when it gets cold I add a mini-biner which is a lot...
I would try Jacks R Better first if you want new. But personally, the first thing I would do is to place a "Want to buy" post on this forum. Then, if you're on Facebook, there are lots of...
Every morning when packing the tarp I begin by rolling up the sides from the bottom towards the ridge. The lines are rolled up with the tarp which helps with tangling. When I get the tarp rolled up...
I'm going one step further. In addition to all the stuff you mentioned which I've been doing on my own for the last three years, I've recently been utilizing forcefield technology to eliminate the...
Really enjoyed your video! You have quite a unique style there!
ReGERTS, man...REGERTS!!! Hey, I'm no critic. Keep on keeping on!
Sounds great! I've hiked a good chunk of GA AT but don't recall hearing about Devil's Kitchen. Where is it?
There are lots of great deals on the secondary market. Also, I believe anyone can post in the "Want to Buy" forum on this site. If you're on Facebook, check out the used backpacking sales groups.
I'll agree with others in that I would recommend a 20 degree set-or perhaps a 20 degree UQ and 30 degree TQ to start out. That way, you COULD make it work year round. That being said, if your...
The last tarp I bought from them was in 2019. Shipping was $12.75 to GA. Bought another tarp in 2018 and Priority Mail was only $7.60. The times they are a changin!
Great video Layne! Your production quality keeps getting better and better. I'm sure you had no regerts on this one!
I think I saw something like that on The Flintstones one time!
Buy quality gear USED here and other online outlets-especially when just starting out as you're not really sure what you're going to like. That way, you don't have a huge investment when you...
That's about how I do it too, except I put the sacko'sacks in the hip pocket of my pack.
