We went on a modified sailing adventure (Sea Base had trouble keeping sailing captains that summer) where we sailed for half the week. We are a hammocking troop (about 30 scouts and 7 leaders - maybe...
I just made another hammock the other day with this style bugnet, and I never really get why it isn't a lot more common. It works great, and when finding rocks is scarce, I tend to just put stuff...
I found it easier to run the shock through the grosgrain before sewing. Then again, my underquilt was one of my first projects, and I wasn't so great at sewing straight and consistent back then.
I always hang mine at a small angle, but they may just be a leftover habit from when I wasn't as good at making sure that my cheap tarp was taut enough to not pool water during a downpour.
You can only fall once!
It all depends on the price of failure... then again, I love to live dangerously (as long as I'm prepared to fail).
I'm not sleeping on the ground very often; but when I do, I always sleep on my side miserably. The above statement makes total sense. Now that I've read this idea and pictured it in my head, I don't...
I can fold up the tensa stand with my hammock attached almost instantaneously. Simply start to exit on the wrong end, and mousetrap the whole thing. Get up off the ground, kick the feet together,...
First thoughts ... hanging on suspension can work for some things as long as your clothes fit between the hammock and your drip lines (depending on the coverage of your rain fly).
Other option...
Very glad to know that our troop isn't the only one that tends to find a way to always choose rainy nights for setting up camp.
I don't remember him buying from Dutch, but I think that I was using what looks like one of the smaller tools pictured here http://https://dutchwaregear.com/product/splicing-hooks-7-pack/
I feel your pain ... I too struggled just like this. Thankfully, my son got into making different crafty projects with paracord (think origami, but with rope), and used his money to guy an assortment...
So far I've used the old, not so popular rock sealing bugnet that I saw posted by Knotty waaaaaay back in the day (I was reading and checking out old DIY threads and came across it). It was the...
If it makes you feel any safer .... I've only ever seen one person fall out of a hammock, and I'm a boy scout leader in a troop full of hammock users.
The scout that fell out of his hammock has...
My opinion against attachment points for topquilts (take it for what it's worth, which isn't much):
A hammock is almost the ultimate personalized customizable camping option. I will lay in my...
One thing I've learned about the hammocking world .... there's almost nothing that can't be done, but that includes ways to mess up. I've found myself doing some of the dumbest things that still make...
I forgot to stake out the foot end of my DIY stand one night when I was tired and in a rush. It was a learning experience for sure, and one that I haven't forgotten since.
Check out the DIY subforum ... the snakeskins are about the easiest thing to make (last time I made some, I made two sets in about thirty minutes with most of the time spent explaining to my wife and...
Every time it made me want to curse I had to imagine how nice it was going to feel on a chilly night up against me. Let's just say I had to do a whole lot of daydreaming to keep me calm. I've worked...
on your honey do list?
I just finished my DIY topquilt, and I put the cinch in the middle. 50% because I wanted to see if I could do it, and 50% because I was intrigued by how much I'd like it....
Finally finished my topquilt tonight. I really like the sewn footbox. I don't know if I'll always like it better, but I feel a whole lot better having made one. Kinda lets me know that option is...
crooked seems are like a badge of honor. When in doubt or challenged by others looking down on you, tell them that your kid made it for you. All the sweet aww's will make the snobbiness dissipate.
Hi-jack away ... although I'll warn ya ... these guys really sold me on a sewn footbox, and if my materials ever get here (delayed shipping may be far down the list of things that I hate about the...
Call it the manger stand.
Maybe it's the wood, but the pics of your wooden stand remind me of a nativity scene.
I made two tensa style stands (one for my son, one for me) using 8 foot long 2x3s. Cost me less than $20 total. So for ten bucks a pop, you can have portable, easily movable stands for everyone....
I have a hammock made out of that (1.1 ) it's very stretchy, and very lightweight. There's some definite pros and cons with that material. Then again, there's definite pros and cons with almost...
OK, I think that I figured out how the whole sewn footbox thing works, and once you see it (unless I'm messing up big time), it really is at least as simple as a zippered footbox. Also, finally...
While I'm new here, I've had no fear of being harrassed for doing "hammocking wrong." I know I'm doing hammocking wrong, I'm like the sultan of shabbiness. On the other hand, I'm for the most part...
- As a noob here that likes to ask questions that have already been covered: sometimes I ask questions that have been asked hundreds of times to save myself. I cannot tell you how many times I've...
Yes, I had this thought late last night. Spent some time this morning thinking it through, and I think that I will be happier with a sewn footbox, and it may even be easier to some extent (not...
On one hand, I am older than I was yesterday. On the other, I thought that I recalled someone talking about dream hammocks in reply to tbird.
sorcery, that's what's going on.
*This is exactly how my wife feels about me any time after day 2 of camping. Sometimes the drive to camping can make her feel this way about me. Apparently, I can the ability to become tiresome to...
Thank you. Your DIY experience is way past my own. You are right about the usage of a quilt draw cord being different, and I wasn't completely thinking about that. Going with just the fabric material...
I have to wait a little to see exactly how this "social-distancing" thing is going to affect our family's finances long-term (my job is pretty darn secure, however the pay isn't, I've gotten use to...
From my understanding (we have a few bug guys in our boy scout troop), it's really really hard to keep spiders at bay, mainly because they typically are not "self-groomers." which means that if they...
I've never had an urge to travel out of the USA. Probably because large crowds, and touristy areas do not interest me. However, your pictures really get me to want to visit your woods. Every time I...
Shug Emery? That guys a clown!
*OK, sorry. The joke was there, and I just couldn't resist picking it up.
So, after tonight's research and tinkering, I have about 5 less questions than before, however I feel like I'm going to be coming back here with a lot more questions soonish.
Background. I'm...
I don't know if this is good advice or not, as I still feel like a noob. However, I've dealt with the overwhelmingness of the hammock world by starting with the super bare essentials: basic hammock,...
I too am wondering while pondering the entry level top quilt question. Given my name, and after checking it out I know that the diamondback is way out of my league, I'd feel like the fat kid taking...
I haven't had to deal with this yet, however I am a thinker.
Were you alone? I pretty much never hike without my son with me, so I tend to think of problems being doubled, but with a partner to...
Well, if you don't believe that it's a small world, one stop here in Lugoff, and you'll be convinced.
My family is originally from MA (Leominster to be exact), and we used to go to a local Greek...
You may end being surprised what can happen if you get the right nice person on the phone with you.
I am not so good at making videos, but I may try to set up one of our stands this weekend.
My wooden poles aren't collapsable because my truck has an 8 ft bed in the back, and my poles are 8 feet...
I haven't been that cold hammocking yet. A few nights where it got to the very upper 20s. No records of wind or anything, but I do have a picture of my cheap setup when we were camping with a nearby...
The initial setup was verbally relayed to my son as, "use whichever lashing you guys have been working on that you think is best while I hold everything still for you."
I was pretty much just...
My son's tarp is some cheap camo tarp that he bought in the gift shop at a state park some time ago. I think it's one of the first pieces of "camping" gear that he ever bought with his own money....
grabbed a quick picture of my son with his super cheap tensa stand. Total from Lowe's for both of our stands together was $19.35 after tax ... pretty cool to get a single hammock stand for less than...
Being the super cheap guy that I am, I finally bit the bullet and made two tensahedron stands today (one for myself, and one for my son) after a quick trip to Lowe's. I got eight 8 foot 2x3's for a...
I'm sure it's just a fad. Soon it'll be just as big a pet rocks.
*On a serious note, this was just about my exact reaction when I first heard about Facebook. I am nothing if not absolutely...
