Buy once, cry once.
I must've got my order in just before they closed up - that would explain the very short time between "order received" and "order shipped" emails.
You'll be happy with GG products when they return.
I concur! I got rid of a 40 year old down sleeping bag a few years ago. The down was still fine, but the shell was so much heavier than modern stuff. As long as you store it loose, either hanging...
I haven't made up my mind on the separate bug net yet. I got the HG separate net, and it seems to work fine, although setting up the UQ is awkward. It's definitely something to work with while it's...
I've slept in my old 10' Blackbird for years. I always thought it was plenty comfortable, but a bit claustrophobic. I recently bought a Hammock Gear Standard 11' hammock (58" wide) just to test it...
I agree with this - condensation/frost will form under any material, waterproof or not, under the right circumstances. When I ski, I wear a breathable windshirt (not waterproof or even DWR) over a...
The quiet of snowy woods is a unique experience.
I never had this problem when I started with a Hennessey - just put your feet through the slit and stand up. Now I have a loop tied onto my ridgeline with a prusik knot to use as a handle to assist...
I carry the same top quilt either way, and my bottom insulation (UQ or pad) weighs the same, so it's just a comparison between my tent vs. hammock & tarp:
Warbonnet Blackbird w/ straps: 27 oz
HG...
I attached a loop of line to my hammock's ridge line with a prussik knot to use as a handle to help me out of the depths of the hammock. What kind of line isn't important, but it helps if its bigger...
if you google "descender rings" you'll get a lot of options - yes, most are climbing equipment - that should suit.
I spray my hiking clothes (including socks & shoes) with permethrin every spring, and sometimes again in late summer if I've been out that much. My hammock - including the suspension - also gets a...
I don't think you're that limited - there are DIY options for adding snaps to hammocks and quilts from a variety of manufacturers.
I believe you can snap on additional quilts to the Superior Hammock - flexibility problem solved!
I still carry a pad for hammocking. I like to cowboy camp or stay in shelters on occasion, and an UQ won't work for those circumstances. ThermaRest ProLite or Prolite plus pads work fine in the...
I use shock cord on my Dyneema tarp (per manufacturer's recommendation!), but not on my silnylon ones (they have plenty of stretch), but that and the rest of the options all seem to be personal...
I use a 6 to 8 section piece of z-rest. Does extra duty as sit pad, lounge pad, and lets me at least sleep a little if I have to go to ground.
I wouldn't call it ideal, though - I'm seriously...
At 5'11'', 180 lbs, I can sleep comfortably in my (original) Blackbird with or without a pillow - it doesn't prop my head up too high. I get just a bit of shoulder squeeze sometimes, but usually...
I've never had a down product smell, even those 50 years old. The sleeping bag I used for 40 years had a "well used" smell, but not off-putting. I'd inquire with the maker about a return. If that...
What I did sounds a lot like Rodfather's setup. Here's a video link of somebody else's similar setup to mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csgsHtfceB4
Bill Bryson's a Walk in the Woods. Definitly not a how-to book, but it's entertaining, maybe a bit enlightening, and might have some good ideas about what not to do.
I'd say no to cutting. You might as well hang a sign that says "i was here." Yeah, one branch at a time won't be noticed, but there are plenty of sites on the AT or LT where you know a camp is near...
So you choose which rules to follow and which to ignore? And when others decide which rules they don't like - what do you do then?
My wife had big restless leg problems, turns out it was due to low iron.
Check with your doctor.
... and a diamond is just a square with class.
Shelves or a hammock stand? I'm with hammock stand all the way. It would be a little easier if you had bigger sheets, but if you cut what you have into short arcs of 15' radius (inner) and 15'6"...
If you slept well, you got it right. I know for myself that if I had trees 20 feet apart, I'd be having my huggers about as high as I could reach, so my butt would be close to chair height if I had...
I really wish I had a comeback for that bit of brilliance.
Drop an email to Brandon - I'm sure he can send you the directions.
Cant wait to get back to Scotland! Covid travel issues have kept me home.
Until then, 2 things that might help: I spent several years using a self-inflating pad (Thermarest Prolite short) as...
I think it's far better to hang the tarp independently of the hammock. My chief complaint with my Hennessey was the closely attached tarp - effective, but claustrophobic. Hanging the tarp...
If you don't mind the bug net on your face, the headnet might do, but I prefer things away from my face, so it's a Blackbird with net for me.
Besides... bugs crawl:scared:
I just got a Hammock Gear DCF tarp for my birthday (WooHoo!), so this thread suddenly gained more relevance for me. The manufacturer advises not to stuff it, so I followed Bonsaihiker's...
I use wooden clothes pins for clips - seems less likely to put wear & tear on the fabric (no sharp burrs).
Have you considered using that nice soft z-rest and getting dressed while standing up? Not that doing contortions isn't thrilling, but...
WBBB w/ straps - 27 oz
WB Minifly -14
WB 20* TQ - 20
WB 20* Yeti -12
1/2 z-rest - 6
Total 79 ounces/ 4.9 pounds
At 20*, I need the z-rest for leg insulation, and I'm super comfy. I don't...
Is that a word to the wise, or to those willing to lie to save a few bucks worth of taxes?
I have an original Blackbird, and I usually hang it quite level (sacrilege, I know). I'm 5'11", 185 lbs.
All I know is that once I fall asleep, I don't wake up until morning.
Good to know, since at the moment I only have one hammock:scared:
Love my Yeti, not sure if it fits your hammock.
A while back I would have said color doesn't matter, but if every part of your setup - hammock, tarp, TQ, UQ - are all coyote brown, it's hard to...
I'm fortunate to have a local gear store that has a huge consignment operation. When I accumulate too much, I can bring it to them, sell it pretty quickly at a fair price, and get credit to......
Shug has great hammock-specific info. Checkout Darwin's (Darwin on the Trail) YouTube channel for bikepacking info.
I suspect that's because the bottom entry can make UQ use more difficult, and interchangeability of UQs is certainly reduced. Hennessey works fine with a pad, though.
You say you looked at bottom entry hammocks, but have you tried one? It's almost like one of those chairs that helps you stand up. When lying down, just stick a heel through the opening, followed...
Never been an issue for me - it stays put just fine. Once I'm asleep, I don't move much - YMMV
I've used torso-length pads for ground sleeping since the 1960's, used the same torso-length pads when I got my first hammock, and continued with the torso-length philosophy when I got an underquilt....
That's pretty much the curtain idea, and somebody has made it for you! I think I'll try that.
I also use a bib (cut from a fleece sweatshirt) over my quilt in cold weather to protect it from me...
Here's an example of the tent curtain: https://www.rei.com/product/144624/nemo-tenshi-2-tent?cm_mmc=aff_AL-_-188477-_-239125-_-NA&avad=239125_f255d8ea1
Plenty of YouTube videos, too. If I could...
Some tents that are truly designed for winter conditions have a curtain of sorts that separates the tent into 2 'rooms'. One room houses your torso and legs in a dry environment, while your head is...
Sell it to pay for hammock-obsessive counseling sessions? I know I could use some therapy.
I'll take sleeping under a tart any day of the week:)
