I'll second and third and . . .the idea of having a backup in case things go badly--especially for a new hammocker. New equipment doesn't work as excepted. Gear breaks. Weather changes...
I should have qualified my request with ". . . with similar qualities to my Superfly". So, durable, lightweight, packs small, etc.
I'll try some I-net searches. Maybe I'll get lucky.
I love it when the weather gives me that rare opportunity to hang without a tarp on a clear night.
Does anyone make a completely clear tarp? I know dyneema is close but it not quite clear enough...
I tie it to itself as another drip line. I do the same with the zing it from my tarp. Those two, and a shoelace, are all I've ever needed for dripline. Probably overkill but it keeps things off...
I have all 4. In the sidecar I put my boots...if they are not wet...and a large coat if the weather calls for it. It is too deep for small items.
Peak shelf is for gloves, hat and glasses case.

No liner for me. If I get hot I stick body parts out until I cool down. Top quilt makes that way easier than a sleeping bag. I also wear a light layer of clothing unless it is hot outside...but I...
That first pic is a crown tipped coral mushroom. They look freaky but are one of the tastiest edibles.
It's a fun side hobby for hikers but never eat wild mushrooms without cooking them and being...
Now THAT would be an entertaining video.
"You can use a thin dyneema strap around your waist to hold in the body gasses. You can also use a large rubber band but HYOH.
Camera angles might also...
The odds of an encounter are extremely rare but a woman was killed by a bear this week in MN. I am WAY more afraid if Cougars than bears though.
Don't hike at night and prepare your mind for any...
Average first frost in Mpls is 9/16. One month away. Looking forward to the annual dissapearence of the state bird--the mosquito (and his nasty friend the deer tick).
Cold evenings by a warm...
I also got frustrated with the UI. If folks find it easy then I must have missed something.
Good choice. I love my Chameleon. I like the new side attachment for storing nighttime gear.
I hate pads--I always wake up with cold body parts hanging off somewhere and they are difficult to...
Great pics. I really love my Minifly. It has seen some hard rain and wind and never failed to keep me dry.
Worms. They are tiny, stay attached to the cord so I don't lose them, and are fast to attach and detach. I was worried about using them with gloves but it wasn't a problem all last winter.
I have both and prefer the sling. Sidecar is deeper so harder to reach things . . . but my Baffin boots won't fit in the sling so I use both in the winter.
Just found another one. Willow River campground. Most sites have good hanging trees but the high numbered sites have easier access to the river. 21 looked particularly good.
Didn't stay--just...
Only one way I can respond to that beauty . . .
Praise be to God who made the Earth and all that exists, King of endless glory!
The more time I spend in nature, the more I say that! The first...
When I use them I hook them to my tarp tie outs. It doesn't seem to affect the effectiveness of the UQ.
Yes. Anywhere you can!.
What I tend to do is park at the gate or the head of a hunting/hiking trail in the winter and walk to a nearby campground when no one is there--or just walk into the woods...
I don't have a specific spot but MN allows "dispersed" camping in any state forest. Hwy 53 runs through Kabetogama so just find a safe spot to park and enjoy the forest. It is black bear country so...
Be careful not to be on the downhill side. I'm not a mechanical engineer but I know there is significant force involved in hammocking and multiple people may be enough to tip the truck.
Too many to list within 2 hours of the Twin Cities. Along the big lake they call Gitche Gumee, #8 at Split Rock is very nice. Never been to Afton but will check it out some day.
Frankly, I...
I see lots of posts comparing the different Warbonnet tarps. One of the first times I used my Minifly I was in a nasty storm. Rained ALL night and very heavy with high winds. I stayed dry. I also...
13 is nice if you are stuck in camp in a rainy day. More room to move. But it is definitely overkill.
You COULD get silly and buy the 13 AND a minifly which is all you'll ever need anyway.
...
+1. Tried it. It ripped. Very inexpensive though so give it a go.
I use the beetle buckles and straps that came with mine. Works great.
Warbonnet makes the Minifly...the first one on your list.
I can vouch for it. I've got one and it has kept me dry in a nasty storm. You will not be sorry if you get that one.
Welcome fellow Twin Citien!
You have a good start and you will have fun but there is a lot to learn. Listen to the good advice here . . . then get out there and see what works for you. Some advice...
You will need something under your body to keep you warm even up to about 70 degrees. Some folks sleep warmer so you can experiment as long as you have something ready when you get cold.
...
Ndxt time out, Try shedding some clothing. With good quilts you shouldn't need more than a thin comfy layer. Feet may be an exception but start with light socks. Easy enough to add another pair if...
Thanks for the bright light reminder. I see a couple holes but no idea if it is safe. I'm gonna hang it just over my bed and try to lay in it and giggle around to see it it gives at all.
Too weird not to post.
My cat always lays next to the keyboard when I am using the computer. I was looking at the new Dutchware Hammock chair and the cat got up, walked across the keyboard and...
Me too. Love it.
Kruger Campground is nice. Near Wabasha, MN.
I put a 50 inside a zero and was warm in a 30 below night. There was a bit of wrangling whenever I rolled over but nothing unexpected.
To prove the equipment works.
UQ. You can always wear more clothes but your weight will squish any insulation below you.
Just a wimpy -30 so far this year.
Shug mentioned surgical gloves for a base layer. Tried it for the first time last night. They are amazing. Tried to sleep with them on and hands got sweaty.
Not at all. Shug has a video at -40 and I hung in -30 just last night.
Last night I hung on the back porch. Negative 27 with slight wind . . . so let's just call it 30 below. Had to crawl out at 5am to get ready for work. Feet got cold around 4am but I had extra...
Where did I leave that mortar?
Just my opinion. . .
Get quilts. They are truly amazing. You would not have been cold.
Start with a good UQ. You'll likely never sleep on that pad again. I have the same pad and, although...
New Years Eve I spent the day grouse hunting and the evening sleeping on the edge of the St Croix river. Temp was zero degrees and wind was whipping down the river. Loved every minute except for...
I must admit, I love my LL quilts. Never let me down. (pun intended)
What I have done is use a spreadsheet and enter all the critical data. Then I can compare side by side. Makes.it easier. One thing to consider if you will be backpacking is fill value. The...
Just signed up--first time at a group hang. Extended forecast looks fantastic--teens at night and 20s with snow during the day with not too much wind. Gonna be wonderful!
What is typically...
I'll take it
I was able to salvage the UQ with a needle and thread. Took my time, was careful and the pic shows the result. Lost a little down but not enough to worry about--I hope. Gonna sleep in it this...
People have been tapping maples for centuries. Trees heal just like people unless the abuse is drastic and constant. Not advocating nails in trees at campsites but stopping it is futile. Just too...
