I have the experience of two very recent overnighters from which I learned a little lesson. Both outings were equally hot/humid.
In both cases, the sleeping bag was not in contact with my body,...
I used it this past weekend to tension my tarp...

Yes! I replaced my use of the taut-line hitch with the Farrimond hitch because I no longer have to feed all the remaining line through the knot multiple times. It's so easy to tie/untie, and it even...
I'll second this suggestion...find some sticks on-site (though I will use poles if I have them), and simply wrap the line around them:

Well, personally, I prefer more natural colors: olive and forest greens, coyote tan, brown, etc...
Another side benefit: Those milkweed ova easily catch sparks for flint & steel fire-lighting. You should be set for life in that regard ;-)
I've also become a fan of the Farrimond Hitch because it's easy to untie, but even more because it can be tied without feeding the working end through (which can be a real pain in the butt when you...
I feel like I'm still getting started...
I started with an ENO double nest (20% off at REI), a tarp I bought second-hand, and some aluminum tent stakes and a bunch of 550 I already had. For cooler...
I know this is an old thread, but I'm wondering what the "walk-up" designation of these campsites means in terms of fees. Is there someone there to collect the camping permit fee? If so, how much is...

What happened? Someone sued the state after getting stung on the tower? ;-)
This used to be literally right around the corner from my house. If I still lived there, it would be a "no brainer" for me.
If you climb the Apple Pie Hill fire tower on a clear day, you can see...
Just curious, where did you hang?
I've used it, and it works well in many regards. However, as has already been mentioned, it abrades easily. It also "grabs" everything (i.e., leaves, twigs, debris, etc..), and tangling is an issue....

I did my undergrad at BU.
My most frequent use of the bowline on a bight is as the loop for a trucker's hitch. It's a reliable fixed loop in the middle of the line, and it unties very easily after the hitch is undone (even...
Welcome from NC! When I lived in Boston, I spent quite a bit of time in NH, hiking the Presidential Range (when I wasn't surfing at Rye or Hampton Beach). Sadly, I wasn't yet into backpacking or...
I had purchased the same because I thought I would have the option to splice or use knots. However, I have also found splicing to be effectively impossible. I'm ok with that because it's still light,...
I joined these forums about 5 years ago, but never properly introduced myself. Since then, I've relocated from southern NJ to the Raleigh, NC area, and it's been fun exploring the outdoors of a whole...
