Great, thanks, all. Good to know about the pack size as well. I'd rather err on the side of comfort over pack size, but it's still going to bug me. :)
I may just get both and see.
Great, thank you. Anyone else?
So I'm not finding this exact answer anywhere. I'd like to put together a super light hammock out of one of these fabrics. I really like the idea of the monolite visibility, but I also seem to be...
If you're hanging in the ballpark of the "normal" 30 degree angle, allowing a Ridgeline about 83% of your hammock body, that puts you at a hammock of what, 13'8"? That's a big setup to then be...
So, my current underquilt is two CDT's Kam snapped together. Both seam ripped for horizontal baffles, and narrowed to about 48" to concentrate the down. One is 65" long (13 CDT squares, full length...
My other thought is make basically two one sided quilts with full footboxes. One with fabric on the inside and naked insulation out, and one with fabric on the outside (slightly larger). Put them...
On a related note, it seems to me that a little bit longer loop would reduce the angle of spread, taking away some of the tension on that first row of stitches.
But still, I agree that almost any...
I think it should work. I thought of it about 12 hours after I got rid of the cinch end and sewed a footbox into a CDT top quilt... :)
Regular footbox edge seams, but with a draft tube integrated so it was inside bridging the"corner" when the footbox is right side out?
So I'm throwing together a couple of climashield Apex underquilts. Double 2.5, because I don't remember why I couldn't get 5 last week.
These are kind of on the cheap, and I have two fabrics from...
A lot of this stuff is diy, so I don't have a good handle on temperatures.
My brother in law, 16 year old nephew, and 14 year old daughter are hammock backpacking for the first time this weekend. ...
I accidentally made a 12' 4" hammock (THOUGHT I cut the body with some precision when I did it a while ago, turns out I cut it "plenty long to trim down to hammock length"). Regular 60" width 1.9...
So, I spliced eyes in a "Zing-it" ridgeline the other day, and just discovered why it was significantly more difficult than the first time I tried.

This is what I get for buying braided...
* Remember pads with wings are more comfortable.
I can't believe I just typed that.
If I had that many to try and get right at once... I might take two of your mini quilts, overlap them in the middle for a 45ish inch wide single quilt. Give those to the boys that had the least...
I'm thinking this may just be the effect of a body not being flat as a board- not so much the fabric coming up for a ' rump bump,' but the rump pushing down on the fabric. Even with some stretch,...
There's always the $1ish Walmart (probably polyester?) fabric used for suit/coat liners. I've got one I periodically lend to the hammock curious, it's perfectly acceptable.
Nice! Nothing owed, something about even a broken watch is right twice a day... :)
I wonder if you could do a really deep sag to raise the ridgeline much higher. Then a center support from the middle of the line. For some reason I can't stop noodling this...
Come to think of it you'd just need the middle triangle, not the outside ones. Got carried away. :)
Pretty cool!
Maybe a secondary ridgeline, substantially higher? Tarp, too, if you need it. The support line with the question mark could maybe be eliminated if you moved the secondary line...
Yeah, it was a sort of idle thought. My first post-hammock-body sewing project was a fairly successful box baffle down underquilt, although not really high quality down and 1.3 oz regular ripstop,...
I wonder how the 100lb+ test braided fishing line would do for prussiks on zing it/lash it? I believe it's Dyneema, like mini-Zing it.
I have some, haven't done much with it... Hm...
Forgive me if this has been proposed before, I've been looking for it in the overabundance of hammock forums mega threads... :)
Has anyone tried a baffled quilt using folded portions of the outer...
Attached is a picture of what I am in the middle of. I had good luck increasing the loft/apparent warmth of a Costco bottom quilt by ripping the long seams and forcing the down into much shorter...
Interesting. The numbers line up perfectly with mine, I've just added the ability to make cost and weight comparisons and approximate temperature ratings. Plus down per baffle, admittedly easy...
So I've been diy-ing on the cheap, with significant guidance from the fantastic people on this forum. Several hammocks, a few quilts, and some other odds and ends later, I am starting to consider...
My latest hammock is cat cut and otherwise identical to the previous one in length fabric, and how they were whipped. I notice very little difference, really. The edges are tighter when you sit in...
Any chance of DIY? If you or someone you know can sew a reasonably straight line, +/- a quarter inch, you can make your own single or double for super cheap. There HAS to be some 1-2oz fabric...
I'm not sure where I developed the patience for this, but an alternative to basting tape is a basting stitch. I cut the curve/hem/whatever as precisely as possible, set the machine for a fairly long...
Great advice so far. I'll just add one recommendation. Do two things right now, today. 1) go to Walmart or a fabric store and buy some thin poly or nylon and make a whipped end hammock. Hang it...
Thanks! Its definitely a 10 footer, especially with black thread on the rolled seams. Thin nylon sure creeps around if you don't know what the heck you're doing...
Been lurking for a while, first time posting. The amount of information and support in these forums is great! I bought 20ish yards of fabric for $40 from Magna a few months ago, and somehow I ended...
