Old Rag is such a cool peak. Heard there’s a pretty weird permit system now though? Glad ya got up there regardless. Pad inside the double layer RR isn’t too bad but always cold shoulders, agreed...
Finally starting to catch up on video trip reports for the past year. This one was February in the Roans. Mostly just mountain views but did a little talking too…enjoy!
Not sure how to embed here...
Love to see the color! The tulip poplars are just now starting to have a few yellow leaves here in TN…

Grassy ridge is one of my favorite mountains to camp on. I’ve taken countless trips up there!
Looking more for car camping spots this time. We’ve car camped once at the yellow mountain gap/OVT...
So I’ve spent a lot of time on the NC/TN border in the mountains and my list of campgrounds/forest service campsites is growing larger by the day. That being said, most of them I have found through...
Yeah I would definitely call and ask first. The Knoxville location no longer does that

Hey y'all,
I had a trip planned with a friend to catch the peak bloom of the Azaleas on Gregory Bald for 2 nights June 27-28 in the GSMNP. Both nights at Sheep Pen Gap (number 13) which is an...
Sadly I didn’t make it out but we were having a party up in the Roans all week. Actually every time we looked a over at the Gorge I’d say “man there’s some good folks out lollygaggin’ in hammocks in...
Invaluable info. Thanks a milli!! If I can get a liter in less than 5 minutes I won’t complain. Lol

Yup. There’s definitely no way of avoiding that weight sadly. That being said I’d recommend checking out the Gossamer Gear bare boxer. It’s a bit lighter and less bulky than the 450. I’ve always...
Looks like it was 2015.

I stayed at Rocky Bayou state park campground in Florida where are the rules were “hammocks are only allowed inside the bounds of campsites or in sites where hammock posts are installed.” I had a...
Keep in mind Bear Canisters are required there now if you’re backpacking.

I just picked up a set of RR spreaders from him back in early January after getting a set of his trekking poles, and God I am thankful I did. Considered taking the ‘hike poles as spreader bars’ route...
I’m also interested. Will be in the Roans around that time and may be able to swing through for a night or two.

Sounds like a fantastic route & should be relatively easy going! Also the slackpack from Icewater Springs to Charlie’s bunion is only about 2.4 miles round-trip. Very easy with no weight, and...
I won’t get too deep into the politics about the new parking tags, but I have been trying to remind everyone that GSMNP was put in place to be a completely free National Park, accessible to all, and...
Just replied to your PM but wanted to add some thoughts and ideas to your trip as someone who is a regular in that area!
There are definitely plenty of good trees to hammock from at the Leconte...
I’m very much interested. A friend and I were already planning a Mt Leconte loop in April, just with less mileage. I’ll discuss with him and report back. All else fail, shoot me a PM when you book...
I’m with Shug in believing that although usage is going up, forum participation is going down. I’m 28 and sometimes feel like I’m one of the younger ones here, however discovering this site in my...
Another great video. Those overlooks were gorgeous with the light layer of snow! I highly relate to Jonahs anxious engineering mind and categorized wood piles…

My version of a ground cloth is very similar to Shug’s, and wouldn’t exactly call it a ground cloth. I use a 22 x 18”piece of reflectix that I cut from a large roll. Weighs close to nothing and folds...
Amazing photos! Rocky top and Gregory bought are two of my favorite peaks and the entire blue ridge. Would love to do this trip, especially in that direction and not the reverse. That being said,...
Gorgeous. Reminded me a bit of the Appalachians until I saw the volcano in the distance!

Agreed! Many thanks. I had about 100 raw images from the trip and tried to pick out the best ones. Not an easy task when you get views like that.

I know the feeling. It’s posts like these that got me backpacking in the first place… Gotta return the favor!

Its a top 3 hike I'd reccomend for anyone going to the Smokies for the first time. Have been up there about 7 times and only had good weather for half of them. Sometimes you get lucky!
Thank you, had a lot of fun playing with exposure levels to capture the color!
@twistytee Many thanks. I think this was the earliest i've ever seen the leaves fall. Usually the high elevations peak around that time (mid october) but everything had already fallen! It was great...
Howdy y'all. This will be my first trip report so bear with me here (pun intended). Areas visited: Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock Wilderness, Pisgah NF, Cherokee NF, and GSMNP
Drove from Nashville to the...
possum daddy coming this week! Have been working and still haven’t had time to go through photos and video

I have been blazing trails since a child, started with dirtbikes then slowly transitioned to feet. My first name starts with J.
In my college days I enjoyed always bringing a ‘funny’ cigarette to...
Twistee maybe you’ll get lucky with the last splash of color! I have always enjoyed seeing the last trees say goodbye to fall in late October.
This is my first time in Joyce Kilmer as well. My...
Hello everyone,
Just wanted to extend an open invite for a last minute trip to enjoy the fall colors before they are gone in the WNC/ETN mountains. A friend and myself will be spending our first...
Another huge fan of 15 foot Dynaweave Beckett straps. Just as Sean McC said they are one of the most flexible options, extremely light, and with my RR I can hang between trees that are nearly 30-40...
Great info! Thanks that’s exactly what I was in for. i see myself likely going for the WB however now that I know there are more options I will consider that and do some research.
I wouldn’t...
mo_hunter very nice! I didn’t expect them to disappoint. Likely will grab one before the winter season

Winter: Midweight 250 merino leggings, wool socks that I bring specifically for sleeping, and a lightweight/midweight base layer top depending on temperature. Will add my lightweight fleece vest,...
Thanks for the recommendation and you’re absolutely right. I’ve been on a mission to become Ultralight even before the accident, however I’m looking to invest in it now more than ever. I use a GG...
Very true, thank you!

Have you tried the one made in house by warbonnet? I was looking at purchasing it very soon unless someone recommends a better alternative. Had trouble finding reviews. I’ve never used a UQP but with...
I also highly recommend these. Just installed them on my minifly this year and they make tarp setup that much easier. Just when I thought my staking process couldn’t get any easier/faster.
I’m...
Hey everyone, long time lurker here from the TN/KY border.... have been using this site as a hammock manual since my early days of hanging in 2013. Started backpacking in 2017 right before graduating...
I have camped in all four seasons and all weather in the Blue Ridge Mountains with minifly and never really had any issues once I figured out how to properly hang and center it. Shug has some great...
If there’s anything I know in the hammock world, “dry” is the most dynamic and contextual word in our vocabulary.
I was hanging at 6000 feet in the roan highlands once and although we were in a...
