I snagged two Typhoon tarps for my family , I really like that tarp design and 35% savings is icing on the cake :)
I have an Explorer UL Classic XL (they are on sale ) coming on Friday, which screams 'Old School'. I really like the idea of the rope suspension but never given it a real chance on my other HH. ...
I have the exact same frustration running the line through both strap eyes, I have tried:
-Replacing the stock suspension with whoopie slings, only to find I hate them
-Leaving the suspension...
Great first post, welcome from slightly South of you in the Central Coast BC! Here’s to a good hiking summer :)
Cheers
I heard back from Taiga and their Ninja plus has baffles that are 3/4” finished size for the extra warmth.
I just saw that today, waiting to hear back on what baffle size they are using.
The new one suits my temp requirements better for most times of the year so I might end up with one too.
As...
Sorry for the delay, here is a bit more information on my Ninja-L quilt. The link to Taiga’s site was posted in one of the first posts, so I won’t rehash them.
Basic dimensions were taken...
Haven’t had time to do anything....this week for sure.
My Ninja arrived in the mail today, sorry just a first impression teaser and not an in-depth report yet.
Taiga hit the nail squarely on the head with this one!
In the sack weight for the Long...
I have one arriving next week in the mail, looks like a good design and price for us in Canada is good. I Will post pics and review once it gets here. I believe it is sewn through but will confirm...
LOL, working on it. I did a photo session but my camera made the tarp look gray. Hoping to get out this weekend and will do some photos.
Tarp is a rich deep purple, looks a lot like the...
My tarp arrived yesterday in the mail :)
First Impression: Standard WB top notch quality. The colour is AWESOME! It is Deep Purple (appears very very similar to Karla's 'purple haze')
...
Well I couldn't handle the curiosity so I ordered one. I know it is only a couple of days before July 4 but I couldn't even wait on the off chance there will be a sale that day! I am sooo weak. ...
Thanks Karla, that is a great colour! I am hoping the WB purple is dark like that but wanting to see a photo If possible. Cheers
Hi all, I may have failed at the search function but I cannot find an actual photo of A WB purple tarp here. I want change up a bit from green to go with my blue Eldorado, thinking about ordering a...
Super nice work, I really like the thought he has put into his gear.
Looking forward to adding LSOH gear to my kit in the future.
My experience with an online order just now:
11:25 - Online order placed
11:26 - Email received - Order Confirmed, Being Processed
12:20 - Email received - Order Shipped
That is impressive...
Mine is simply a short name I could remember easily.
Hammer Lake Spring(?) Hike
There are so many beautiful places in the world and these are what I get to look at.
This is a short spring hike I did the other day with a buddy who recently...
I spoke with Kelty at HH about that a year or so ago, she said there is no difference and you can lay either way. She said she preferred head away from zipper to keep her hair out of it.
I change...
For clarification I use a small shop vac with bags, the down stays contained neatly in the bags until I am ready to use it. For stuffing I prefer the Venturi method made from double sink plumbing ...
I've used a couple of different vacuum cleaner methods to harvest and stuff down from several old sleeping bags and comforters, all have worked well.
Down quality has varied from about bad to good...
Checking in on this thread, any news on a date and location?
Welcome to the forum from West Coast BC
I am 5'11" and 190 pounds, I bought an expedition but think you would be happier with the longer and lighter explorer ultralight. My experience is I find the exped a little cramped and I can't...
I really like the green tarp, I like to the blend into my surroundings while avoiding browns or blacks
Enjoy your new tarp!
OK I did a really quick setup for a few photos. They were taken in late afternoon with high overcast and flat light.
No Flash used.
The first is a wrinkly photo just our of the snake skins
The...
That looks right to me too
Drat,
I just took my brand new forest green OMW down from a quick test pitch, I didn't take photos though.
EDIT: I just checked and the color is dark green, exactly like the Hennessy green...
The trick is finding the tarp that works best for each person's requirements, which of course will vary.
For me the WL Oldman Winter is the best balance of price, coverage, ease of use and...
To collect down from a donor quilt I like to use a small shop vac with a new clean bag and just vacuum the down into the clean bag, clean and easy. Starting at one end of a donor baffle I make a...
I'll echo that sentiment. Looks like my tarp shipped out during the ice storm as well. As good as it gets!
An easy way to guesstimate the amount of down is to measure lenght x width x loft of each one to get the volume of each quilt. Next divide each one by your guess of down quality (550, 650, 850 etc)...
Hennessy's Monsoon and Typhoon tarps use velcro strips to attach the main edges of door to tarp, as well as a small ring/mittenhook setup at the top and ring/toggle setup at the bottom to secure it
Glad you appreciated it, the man was a genius.
I think it would go great with this....(pic is from an art gallery in Brazil)
Sometime the fun is in the creative process, rather than the finished product.
I had the shell of an old down sleeping bag left after re-purposing the down into Topquilts. I hated to throw it out...
and they are great sacks! :)
Large would be the safest bet, I can easily fit a Greylock 4 (3/4 UQ) into the small sack it came with, but my 3+ season TQ just barely fits and doesn't leave room to roll. A full 4 season TQ would...
I'm only about 500km North of you as the crow flies but I have to drive 1000 km to get there...go figure
Cheers
I'm about 12 hours drive North-ish...following for interest in case I am down that way at the right time.
I have a length of shock cord on each end of the quilt that is tied to one of the end corners (actually in this photo it is clipped on using small carabiner) and then runs through the other side...
I did one sort of like that but without a zipper. It evolved when I needed a sock for a winter overnight trip the next day.
I took two hammock blanks that I didn't want to cut, sewed them...
With only 1 and 1.5" of down it would only be a summer rated UQ. Most 3 season 20F quilts have about 2.5" of down and 0F quilts have about 3.5 or 4" of down.
'Supercub' is showing them off, set up as TQ and UQ combo
This is a short summary review of the 3 season Barnaby Top quilts I ordered from Underquilts.com. My goal was two quilts that are versatile, strong and warm. Turns out I got that in spades.
I...
And welcome from Central Coast BC too
That's right, it was actually your thread got me thinking about picking up my two TQ shells to re-purpose a bunch of down I had.
Both are 3 season topquilts, I hugely overstuffed one for cold...
Pappy you'll be happy with them,
I just finished stuffing the second Barnaby TQ from my recent order and it is excellent gear. Between that and finishing up a new hammock I am trying to find...
Hangandy, Here's a haiku I wrote about my JRB Greylock 4 UQ:
Puffy nest of down
Warm and cozy I sleep well
Somewhere, geese stand naked
