If your only purpose is to keep the pad in place, you should be able to get away with that. It will be a lot more finicky than one hammock to deal with.

Are you assuming a channel or a whip suspension? I suppose if you whip the two hammocks together, it would essentially be the same as a double layer, just very hard to keep the two layers nice...
