The first week of October/last week of September are pretty much the peak for fall color.
The location is a YMCA camp. There is camping on-site ($30 fee for the weekend) and a number of good hammock sites in the pines! I'll be there. I'm also bringing a bunch of stuff to sell at the...
Great trail video, Shug! Fun times in the piney woods!
Nice job on this video...fun with a bit o' instructional content. Thanks, buddy!
Conventional "wisdom" usually gets that status because it works. If you think you have a better solution, then try it out and report back here. We're open to learning, but for me the starting point...
Hammock Gear!!
What he said! The Ultimate Hang book is a first-rate summary of the accumulated "wisdom" from the community. It's not the end of the story, but IMHO one would be foolish to ignore the experience...
Me too! Easy to do.
Adam and Jenny are extraordinary as mfrs, vendors and all-round good people. We are fortunate to have them around. Full-disclosure, I have three HG top quilts and two HG underquilts EACH of which...
This bag is now sold.
Ditto. What's the price?
I have a gently used Western Mountaineering Antelope Sleeping Bag - Long size (suitable for up to 6'6") for sale The build quality of WM gear is legendary! This bag is rated to 5 degrees, and this...
FWIW, I have an 11' Traveler (longer than standard), two-layer 1.1 that has only seen two nights usage. Webbing suspension. Send me a PM if you want to follow up. I'm open to selling because I...
All my top quilts are sewn since I can't envision using a TQ in a hammock without using the "footbox".
+1 to Zing It
Adam and Jen are first-rate! Nice people to start with and a generous spirit that sets them apart. I'm glad to echo the on-going praise!
I think you'll really like the gear you're starting with. Add insulation and the major bits will be done!
I've used the Tractor Supply product (10% solution) that I dilute 20:1 to get to the desired 1/2% solution. Once dry, there is no odor, at least none that I can smell.
FWIW, the only uncomfortable nights I've ever had hammocking were when I had the hammock too "tight" (less than 30 degrees from horizontal, not enough slack or "angle of the dangle" when suspended...
Try these guys...

They've been around forever, good customer service, reasonable prices, willing to do custom work if needed.
My wife and I have been going up for a week (or more) for 25+ years. The last week of September/first week of October is more or less the peak fall color period. There is color in abundance before...
Ditto! (What he said!)
I wish I needed a new pack (or two)! Both are great packs!
Generally trail conditions are excellent. The bug population is largely gone by then. Depending on rainfall over the summer, some of the small creeks used for water sources may be dry or very low,...
I'm relieved that he's OK, but that's scary to be such a situation and not know if he's safe!
I like Fronkey's idea!
FWIW, there is no overnight parking permitted at the Caribou wayside parking lot. There is limited parking (3-4 spots as I recall) at Sugar Loaf Rd, about 7 trail miles north of the Caribou parking...
Here's the latest!
Fronkey and Tala successfully FINISHED THE NORTHBOUND SHT thru-hike today, the first ever thru-hike on snowshoes (so far as I know). He's on his way home and will doubtless...
I'm hoping to make this one, but I'll need to wait a bit before committing. There's a family wedding around that time, and the date hasn't been confirmed yet.
I'm 6'5" and the Hammock Gear TQ's work well for me...I tell Adam & Jenny and they make it long enough for me.:)
I'm 6'5" and 210 lbs (down from 225). I've been very happy with my Blackbird 1.1 dbl layer over the past three years. No issues. Very comfortable and reliable.
I've had the same issue and prefer the Night Owl hammock from Wilderness Logics. The WL Night Owl incorporates stretch cord in the side hem, strategically located at the foot and head to mitigate...
I'm sure you'll get lots of opinions. Here are some basics on tarps:
Shape: Most tarps for hammocking are either rectangular (e.g. 10'x12') or hexagonal. A variant on these shapes is "diamond...
The SMD Lunar Duo is a great tent, spacious, efficient and very, very lightweight for it size. Even though I am a hard-core hammock user, I keep my Lunar Duo for those rare times when I can only use...
It's good to see you on the trail again, Shug! Mrs. Beep and I are in the woods day hiking each day this week and returning each evening for drinks/dinner/sleeping in a cabin near Grand Marais.
...
You'll do a great job. See you there!
Bump! Anyone interested?
My experience with synthetics is that over one summer of VERY active use (35 nights or more of packing/unpacking), my daughter lost about one-third of the loft.
The old "rules" still...
Hi all,
I received a message from one of the Winter Camping Symposium organizers who wanted to know if any of our Hammock Forum folks wanted to organize and present a class at the upcoming Winter...
IMHO, this (and its predecessor from Dana Design (later Marmot)) is one of the nicer add-on accessories for hiking. I use the water bottle pouch on mine in cooler weather for hat, gloves,...
This is a great backpack, albeit heavy. I keep mine for carrying Minnesota winter-sized loads. It fits perfectly in my pulk!
I'm not available any of those weekends...I have a wedding, two concert performances and the Winter Camping Symposium. Bummer!
Here's what I learned from the SHTA about trail closures...
I can do the weekend of October 27/28, 2012. The weekends on either side of that have "must attend" events for me. If we do schedule it for that weekend, I'll probably go up a day or two early.

Permethrin is a broad-spectrum insecticide. It should deal with anything that contacts the treated clothing.
From the EPA's "Red Sheet" on Permethrin...
Yes! It's as good as they say!
(from Minnesota tick and mosquito country)
From my own learning experience, the WBBB is generally pretty forgiving for most mistakes (learning curve stuff). Generally...
Don't hang it too tight. Keep the suspension angle at about 30...
I'm 6'5" tall and have both a WB Yeti and a HG Phoenix. Both work well for me, though I get a bit more coverage and margin of error forgiveness with the bigger Phoenix.
I don't want to start a flame war but I found the Switchback to be very uncomfortable, enough so that after two nights I returned it. YMMV.
I'm 6'5" and am happy in the Warbonnet Blackbird. If he made a longer version, I'd probably buy one, but there's no "need" for it, really. I do have an 11' WB Traveler as well. Comfy!
