I've been in a situation where it would have been better to sleep on the ground and there was a choice.
Goat Rocks Wilderness Area in Washington. The rain/mist/clouds were blowing sideways, and...
Like Chop all my experience is on the PCT portion of the TRT.
What I heard from other hikers that have hiked the whole thing is the PCT part is the best part of that trail.
You spend a lot of...
Due to my giardia I pooped in my hammock once. Does that count?
Mtn lions have a strong preference to chase down and kill their prey. A human, which isn't really on a cats menu anyhow, in a hammock isn't acting like food.
I know most people are going to think...
You should be much more worried about other humans and where you'll shower.
Is Brian making cuben tarps?
if the answer is yes...
Are the dimensions the same for the cuben MacCat Deluxe and it's Sil version?
Is the outer hem still done the same way as on the sil tarps?

Holy cow! Shug lives in a normal house with carpet and TV's and stuff?
All this time, I thought he lived in a garage or in the backyard of his "wifes" house! :)
Stay on topic...
When I was...
The only reason you haven't gotten any responses yet is there's about 30 members diving through their couch cushions and stealing change from their children's piggy banks.
For best fit/warmest w/ no cold spots: Speer Snugfit
Lightest weight (that I have used): Warbonnet Yeti.
It looks like you're going on a good year, with below average snow. That means less water though.
I wish I could make it out there...
I hiked the PCT in 2010, if you've got any questions,...
I love hiking, but I hate the planning of a hike. It detracts from the experience, if I pour over maps and know exactly what's in front of me around the next bend.
I could save about a pound of...
I've ended up on the ground a bunch of times. I keep a shorty neoair pad, a piece of Tyvek with me, and I use my pack under my legs.
It works well. I don't really mind it much at all but if...
I wish someone would come out with an integrated underquilt.
And/or
I'd like to see the design of the Speer Snugfit underquilt adapted with new materials like some of the newer, lighter...
The only thing that it has that the cottage manufactures don't is a built-in hood.
Maybe that's something for JRB, HammockGear, and all the rest to think about. Personally, I'd rather the hood...
If like a light pack, replace the blue tarp first. If weight doesn't matter to you, definitely go with the underquilt.
I've spent many a night without campfire or any form of electric light. You're right, it can be nice.
I'm pretty sure I understood the spirit of your original post. I have a similar argumentative...
I voted: Campfire? What ever my hiking partner wants.
If I'm by myself, I'll almost never have a campfire. It's just too much trouble to be worth it.
It seems like it's almost mandatory while...
How much confidence do you have that would keep you dry in a modest sized storm?
The truth is any tarp that you can string up for a hammock will work just as well on the ground. The exception being some of the really small asym tarps like the stock Hennessey Hammock tarps.
I've used a quilt on the ground many times (Sierra Sniveller and shorty Neoair) and probably will again. I stayed warm with no problems even at 11,000 feet and 20 F.
That's not to say it's for...
I'd agree with that to a certain extent. I don't really see why anyone would get a 8 lbs. pack for recreational backpacking at this point. Modern, lightweight materials have come a long way. In some...
I've gotta disagree. 10 hours x 2mph = 20 miles.
Personally, I struggle if I try to walk any slower than that.
I'd go with a compromise of very shallow cat cuts.
What?! Nobody told me there was an opening for HF.net bully!
ScotchDave, you're ugly, your momma dresses you funny, and I'm coming over to steal your milk money. :)
I'm just kidding, of course,...
Not that there's anything wrong with your plan, but does your quilt fit you?
I've never had the problem that you're describing, but I can easily imagine it happening if the quilt is either too...
My packs weight w/out food/water/fuel is about 12 lbs.. I could knock that down below 10 lbs. pretty easily simply by leaving my bear canister at home. If I was going a long distance, I would trim...
If the end is hanging open that can happen. Try tightening up the suspension on the under quilt.
I like for the under quilt to look like its slightly lifting up the bottom of the hammock when I'm...
It's been a couple of years since I've used my Speer Hammock + Snugfit underquilt.
I had forgotten just how well that UQ fits the bottom of that hammock. There's just no potential for air gaps...
If the problem originates from the angle that you're laying at, you could change where the sweet spot in hammock is by lengthening the ridge-line.
I’ve slept on the ground a number of times since converting to hanging. Probably around 6 or so. Mostly while I was hiking on the PCT.
The circumstances usually involved being at an altitude where...
Now that there's breathable cuben fiber material on the market, which cottage gear manufacturer is going to be first to market with a cuben fiber hammock?
For someone who's spent zero nights sleeping in a hammock while actually hiking, Tinny speaks on his videos with a surprising amount of expertise.
Tinny told me I was making it up when I said a vapor barrier beneath (pads) the sleeper has condensation potential.
I think he's the kind of guy that likes to figure things out for himself. I...
A couple of months.
I've used it on about 6 nights. It's been really dry here in Minnesota lately so it hasn't seen any rain yet but I don't expect to have any problems.
The tarps that I've...
I wish when I ordered my HG cuben tarp I had specified no cat cuts on the long edges. It's already narrower than my sil tarp the tiny bit of weight that the cat cut saves is negligible. The extra...
The bug net on the Blackbird when flipped over to the side is still going to come almost all the way to the ridgeline.

What are you doing that you need snake gaiters?
Spinn is lighter weight, and less porous than sil (sil will still keep you dry in most circumstances). Sil is much more quiet than spinn. Sil comes in more colors than spinn.
That's about it.

I have agree, for the most part, with the OldGringo.
I'd add though, that gear from cottage gear manufactures isn't necessarily for everyone.
Sometimes these folks get backed up due to large...
My thinking exactly until I bought some newfangled dyneema cord for my ridgeline tieouts.
This is how my thinking went:
1. Saw the tiny, little, titanium DutchHooks. What a great idea at a...
BIG mistake!!!
You get the guySmiley toughguy award for either the pork brains OR the gravy, for what it's worth! :)
Weight matters. Especially for a thru hike. Some may disagree with that. Most won't.
Even if I was going to go with a tarp with the same form factor as the stock Hennessey, I'd still replace the...
I've heard that stuffing rather than folding is better for the long term longevity. Mainly because when you stuff it doesn't get folded in the same spot over and over again. Well, I heard that in the...
4 weeks is a long time to be away from family, but it's not that long. Neither is 6 months. If what you're doing is running away or avoiding some problem in your life by disappearing on the PCT,...
As long as you keep the buckles underneath that tarp you don't need the dripstrings at all.
I've spent many rainy nights in a hammock/tarp setup nearly identical to yours (your tarp is nicer, I...
Very cool!!
When do you start, and with which trail?
It just occurred to me that having an elegant ground set-up is a very under-marketed factor among all the various hammock gear companies. It would be really cool if someone could make an ultralight...
