I haven't posted anything in a long while. It's mostly because I'm happy with the kit I have and haven't made anything new in a while.
Now I'm teaching my 12 year old son how to sew with some...
Shug did a great review of their Nube' system about 18 months ago (maybe 2 years).
I just hope all is well. He has been an inspiration and a great support for all the DIYers here. I miss him.
LOL - I think you are just supposed to hug the tree to improve it's health. :D In some places even picking up dead-fall off the ground is considered harming the 'biosphere'.
I like how you are thinking. The KISS principle would probably narrow the CoC down to Leave No Trace. I think this makes number 3 redundant. Number 2 also seems a bit obvious since if we didn't...
Just taking it a step further, I made 3" CLs out of Zing-It. I also used Zing-It for the ridge line. I know you can just tie a knot to make a loop for a prussick but a CL is just a bit neater.
On the Reaper, what is the interior color? What fill? Bags (stuff sack, storage) included?
Thanks.
I used mini-CLs (about 5"). Mostly because I had a bunch of amsteel lying around.
Is it the black noseeum mesh?
So here are a couple pictures. First, with the Chameleon bug net from Dutch

Next is the wider bug net that I made.

The Chameleon bug net is reversed as far as symmetry but the...
I just picked up a full mast set of the fiberglass poles. I choose to make a tensa style stand but I assume the load forces aren't too different. The set is a little heavy but VERY strong. ...
After seeing kitsapcowboy show off his Chameleon clone and seeing Jellyfish's Nova Harmony videos a half dozen times each; I felt inspired to give this a try myself. I have never seen a Chameleon in...
Thanks Shug.
After seeing that, I'm thinking "going to ground" isn't such a bad idea.
I've been hammock camping for a couple seasons now and after all my evangelizing my wife is finally interested in giving it a try.
I'm making her a set of gear and have a pole for the beetle...
Tensahedron Stand v3.0
So while I was at Rotary Scout Reservation by Clare, MI I stopped by General Jim's Army Surplus. If you are ever up that way, it's worth a stop.
I picked up a fiberglass...
Actually National does want to do all the work. (I'm not sure if it's for standardizing it job security.) If you read the guidelines, a list of suggested requirements is helpful but all they really...
I use 9" CLs and carabiners. Pole length 108" and hammock ridgeline 110"

I am still looking for an answer as to whether anyone has actually submitted this to BSA yet.
>> jeff-oh Thanks for your well reasoned and detailed response. I agree that adding hammock options...
》Chesapeake it sounds like you are raising your daughter's well. All my kids are getting hammocks I made for their birthdays this year. So far no one has shown interest in making their own gear yet....
There is a thread from many years ago that outlined suggested requirements for a Hammock Camping (Hammocking?) Merit Badge. This was done mostly in fun, but a good list of requirements were created....
I don't understand it, but turning the spool of thread around seemed to solve the problem. I also went out and bought a fresh pack of needles. I never thought to keep track of the used ones when...
Tensa-failure
So I gave the garden stakes a try.

They seemed pretty stiff until I had the structure built and all the sudden everything felt wobbly. I carefully put my weight in the hammock...
I saw those too, and they are too flimsy. They are also only 7' long and maybe 5/8" diameter. Closer would be the 8' Sturdy Stake at Home Depot but even those felt more like they were a plastic...
So I was in the garden store yesterday and saw 3/4" x 8' garden stakes for $4 each. These seemed to be pretty strong and stiff and at a guess I would say they are about 1/3 the weight of EMT.
The...
I learned the hard way that it is very easy to get your CDT UQ too tight especially with a flew suspension. For me it turned out that I made my suspension too short and had to add extensions.
If...
So I've tried two different new needles and it's still happening.
I am really starting to think it might be the shuttle hook. It might finally be time for a tune up.
I'm pretty sure that a 90/14 is the right size. I haven't done the slide test to be sure, but this size has worked before now.
I did just change needles before this started happening, maybe it's...
Looking for some help to figure out what is wrong. On the last two hammocks that I've been making, my thread keeps splitting.

I'm not sure if you can see exactly what's happening, but the...
So I'm just finishing up my NOVA Harmony with Chameleon zippers and I'm starting to wonder about this whole hammock tie-out thing.
What benefits do hammock tie-outs provide? Besides looking cool...
I have learned the hard 》ouch《 way that crimp style connectors and plastic coated cable are not recommend.

I am now in the process of switching all my connections to the screw type and...
Thanks Kyle. While a bit saddened by it's passing, I look forward to see what you come up with next.
If you want to practice on the real thing, RSBTR is discontinuing a lot of their 1.9 Ripstop. At $3.35 a yard it's hard to beat and has a nice hand.
I've got three words for you. Jellyfish, Jellyfish and Jellyfish. I've watched each of her videos at least three times and some of them many more.
Not only did I learn a lot about how to make...
Is that 2 pair of dynema straps? Or just 2 straps?
Cowboy - Thanks for the quick response. I understand the whole zipper thing (at least I hope I do). My question is about the ends.
An 11' hammock is going to start with a 144" blank. If the...
Quick question. Do you roll-hem the entire edge before installing the zipper? Or do you install the zipper and then roll-hem the rest?
I've got my zippers ordered and am about ready to dive into...
That's awesome :D
Not sure what size exactly because it was just left over, but mine was about the same.
That turned out great! Very nice work!
What measurements did you use for the pull-outs and how did you decide on them?
I don't think Cowboy uses a pattern as such. If you look for Jellyfish's Nova Hammock design it gets you pretty close.
It is what I will use just swapping out Chameleon zips and adding a...
I found that the 7/8 caps fit perfectly. I also used the coated cable as connectors. I happen to have about 50' of it from a zipline the kids no longer use.
I didn't smooth out the holes I...
I just feel like venting. While I really like some of the new colors RSBTR is offering, Tawny Olive was my favorite. Just enough yellow to be bright and cheerful just enough earthyness (sp?) to keep...
I struggled with this for a while. For me the question was point of reference or perspective. Is it "left" & "right" as you're sitting in or facing the hammock front. What if it's "left" & "right"...
Beautiful tarp! I'm both inspired and green with envy.
I remember discussion of your grosgrain ridgeline, but I don't remember where I saw it.
Any chance you could repeat your process or point...
Jdy98p - great job there. Thanks so much for the report, it looks like you found an affordable way to make this portable.
Now I have to dig through this whole post to find that link again.
...
Did anyone ever approach BSA National about this idea?
If they can offer Fishing and Fly Fishing as separate badges, I don't see any reason this couldn't fly.
Maybe the HYOH guys could use...
jdy98p - I'm really interested in seeing your report on these. I have looked into getting a die made to crimp the ends and it would be too expensive unless I was going to make a dozen.
I'm not...
Question for those who chose metal instead of wood. Did you use the full 10' or cut down the length?
If you cut it down, what length are you using 9', 8', 8 1/2'???
I'm going to throw one...
I'll take the Reaper. Sending pm.
