Radford, VA here, and there's a handful of us that go out on occasion, mostly hangers.
Well, I was supposed to be working all day, but the rain got me off early (10AM early :scared:) so I'll be heading down (with my fixed 'yak, Cakes :D) in an hour or so.

Well hello again my friends! It's been a long hiatus, but I'm back, and looking forward to seeing all y'all on Friday evening.
I'll be bringing a raffle item or three, and maybe some food for the...
Rev can probably educate us on the technicalities, but the hybrid felled french is much easier to sew, at least for me, since you don't have to tuck anything in as you go like on the flat felled. Try...
There's 2 aspects to what you're asking, I think. The weight of the fabric (regardless of the coating) is referred to as the denier, which is rather complicated, but suffice to say, the higher the...
I started out with an 8'x10', and while it was rather small, it taught me the intracies of getting a good pitch and staying dry. The next one I made was 12' long, and 10' wide. While it was nice to...
I'm partial to the Ashley stopper knot myself. Works wonderfully in cordage, and for stretchy stuff, needs a bit more dressing, but works well, and uses minimal length.

Well, every one is different because I don't really have a formula, but a general rule of thumb I've found is that the circumference needs to be greater than 7" to make for easy stuffing. So I...
Ditto on the spray glue and rubber/contact cement (they're all the same stuff, just different forms). Great stuff, and stays flexible.

I usually just order a few extra of whatever I'm buying for a project, that way I always have a growing stash of replacements/miscellaneous bits for projects. I also usually buy online, so not sure...
Very cool! What kind of bamboo is that? I've never seen it without any joints before. :-S
PF
@FIMB, Yeah man, it'd be great to see you again. I'm working on graduating with my Masters, so I may actually get down there for that one.
@Cakes, I was actually thinking about you a lot on that...
Thanks for the comments everyone! We had compasses (but only one landmark to take a bearing off of, not enough for triangulation) and our phone's GPS', but only occasionally was able to get...
There were once three adventurers, a grad student, a musician, and an airline pilot who went on a 3-day tour of Linville Gorge. The plan was to do a shuttle hike from the east rim to the west rim and...
Yay, another 62C owner!! Welcome to the club.

I just tie a short piece of Zing-it or other string in a double fisherman's next to the bury so it won't pull through, and trim it short. Stylish, and won't break or anything.

Another factor is the type of synthetic insulation. Climashield doesn't pack down nearly as much as Primaloft, and Insultex doesn't pack down much at all. My 10F Primaloft UQ packs down smaller than...
Very cool! Thanks for bringing us along. :)
Tell Steve I say hi!
PF
I have a 74" winter UQ, and I use about 6' of SC on one end, and paracord on the other. I find this takes a lot of fiddling out of the adjustment process (which is a good thing when it's 15F!). I...
Man, I wish I was over on that side of the continent!
What kinds of fabric you got? Anything in the higher D range and either coyote or olive or the like?
PF
Like Pag said, coozies, definitely sit pads.
Also, padding in backpacks, insulated grocery bags, handle cushions for lots of stuff...

Whoooo buddy!! Lab tomorrow afternoon is cancelled because the prof is out of town. That means I can go to Happy hour with all the geography guys and spend that time tomorrow getting ready. There are...
Very cool and innovative! Good job!

I think you may be confusing 2 different things. Poly(ester) is the material. Taffeta and crinkle taffeta are both weaves, so you could theoretically have nylon crinkle taffeta, nylon taffeta (or...
I went through my DIY bookmarks, and found a few places with pink stuff.
Some different options, as well as some ripstop.

There's not much in town. Depending on which direction you come, the last sizeable town will be Mars Hill, which has a grocery store or two. If there's a need, I can pick some things up to contribute...
I was once in the same boat as yourself, Steve. I got a couple of mystery bargains at Walmart, got a few knowns from outdoor fabric places. The Burn Test Chart helps some in determining the content,...
Well, thanks, I may have to revisit them now that you thought of using just the kernmantle.
I actually never did put the one I made to use. I guess I just string my tarps tight enough that it's not...
Great minds think alike!!
I posted a similar thread a while back in the Tarp subsection

Double post. Trigger happy.

Once again, school precludes me going this year. really wish I could. Maybe next year??

How about building a stand like a swingset (A-frame on each end and a pipe "ridgeline") and make it so it fits snugly between 2 of the walls (probably along the 116" wall)? That way you would be...
Niiice! I've got an Elna 32c, and in doing the research, I heard nothing but good things about the green supermatics. Very good find.

I hope this isn't too off-topic, but is there any way to do a bridge hammock in such a limited space?
I've got a loft that I currently hang my hammock (gathered end) under, from corner to corner....
I've got Linelocs on all my tarps' tieouts, and they've held up in 40 mph winds, and the only time I've broken one was when the hammock suspension was pulling against it wrong (user error). The only...
I can't wait!:D I've got my own 'yak and paddle that I'll be bringing, so somebody else can use your Torrent.
And I just remembered, Singing Otter will be in Raleigh that weekend for a dog...
Well, count me in for this one! I'll have class on Friday until about 5, so I'll be getting in late, so save me a spot somewhere and I'll sneak on in.
Count me in for the kayak trip too. I wouldn't...
You could use tieouts like are on the Warbonnet Blackbird. It wouldn't eliminate swinging, but it would make any swinging that does occur die out pretty quick.
Hope that helps,

EDIT: Durp,...
Growing up, I used to watch my grandmother do quilts and dresses and stuff in her sewing room, and think it was pretty cool. Fast forward 15 years and now I use her Elna 32C, and my mother's Sears...
I only know what I've heard, but the word is that Pertex has a wonderful feel to it. I'd say go with either. My only concern is that the description of the blue pertex 5 doesn't mention...
How did you gather the ends? Did you use the Hennessy fold-in-half-repeatedly method, or just scrunch them together, or the W-fold, or something else?
Curious,
PF
Yeah. You could change the distance between the tips of the dart to make it flatter or steeper (more like a circus tent).
PF
So I was drawing this while you posted that you're not hot on using blue tarps, but I had already drawn it when I read that, so I'll post it anyways. :)

The idea with the dart would be that...
I believe it was Bluenose Climbers on here that made the huge geodesic dome hammock hanger, and they used blue poly tarps that they taped together. You might consider using the 3M VHB tape.

Here's a shot of my new Picnic Hammock. I love it!

I had to jerry rig the attachment a bit to keep from abrading the amsteel, and here's what I came up with from what I had on hand:

I've made a few tarps this size, and putting the bottom tieouts 3' in from the corners has worked well for me.

The AT provides several opportunities very close by.
Rice Fields is just up US 460 in Pearisburg.
Dragon's Tooth is just over the mountain from the Pickle's Gap shelter and makes a nice (if...
Woohoo!:blush: Thanks for putting the contest on, Paul! I think this will be my home hammock. I'm moving to a new place, and am going to try the full-time hammocking thing.

How about Kitchen Sink and Double Kitchen Sink?
That way, when people say, "everything but the kitchen sink." you can say, "Nope, I've got my Kitchen Sink right here!"
Best of luck to everyone...
Best solution would be to find a large flat space and lay the thing out, but I understand if that's not an option, although driveways, parking lots, garage floors, all have potential.
Probably the...
