You know if you're still lusting after a genuine original, I still have two. I could probably be convinced to part with one.

You know if you're still lusting after a genuine original, I still have two. I could probably be convinced to part with one.
I've been pondering loading my 30 degree with about 6 ounces of 900...
*Similar*, but not quite the same. You can use a Peapod on any of your gathered end hammocks as opposed to the insulation and hammock being married. A separate hammock and insulation means you can...
Good news for those wanting to see colder temps for a winter hang. The forecast for Friday is now in the mid 30s with lows that night in the mid 20s.
Bear in mind, that's the summit which is 800-1000 ft higher than the campground with no windblock. The summit is about 2.75 miles away as the crow flies and about an 8 mile hike.
NOAA doesn't go out...
White Top is the mountain next to Rogers and the closest location to GHSP.
Friday and Saturday are still looking to be in the 40's with lows around freezing. Fortunately the chances of rain dropped...
Soft shackles are spliced. I believe the video just has a stopper knot and a larks head as opposed to a splice. The two may be functional equivalent, but there's no comparing the strength.
That...
I feel like a true underachiever in that regard. Outside of a few Climashield pieces I acquired for damper paddling trips, I haven't picked up anything new in years. The old stuff that kept me warm...
The higher areas of TN and NC will see minus 15 about every 5-7 years. Whenever I see the opportunity, I start packing for it.
Minus 5 can be found most years above 5000 ft. Citico, Slickrock, and...
Accuweather for Grayson Higlands and Weather.com for White Top seem to agree with what you're seeing.
Friday high 50, low 32. Saturday high 44 low 28 with rain and snow mix on Saturday. Heavy winds...
It ain't hang gliding.
I'm looking more at guylines and a tarp. Accuweather has a high of 50 Friday low of 32 with rain and wind gusts up to 33 mph. Saturday has 40 mph gusts with a high of 48.
If you mean packboot liners, try Wiggy's Sunwalkers. Unlike wool, they won't hold moisture. Odds are your feet generated perspiration making your wool liners damp during the day.
Sunwalkers also...
Most hikers will have a couple of stuff sacks with clothing or layers you were hiking in. Just put one of those under your ankles and it should offer more insulation than a pad.
Unless I'm wearing...
"Looking colder and some snow possibly. "
Thank goodness!
I was seeing highs in the 40s with lows around 30 a couple of days ago.
Better late than never I suppose.
The "draft free" aspect is arguably one of the biggest warmth boosters about a peapod.
To be fair, most of the time when it's going to be above 20, I just use a...
FWIW, I have a 30 degree and a 20 degree. The baffles appear to be about the same. The weight difference between the 30 and 20 when I bought them was 4 ounces 32 vs 36. With that being said, your...
I still own two, a 30 degree and a 20.
Most synthetic insulation (Climashield, Primaloft, Thinsulate....) is silicone encapsulated. all of the short staple kinks. The only one that seems to avoid that is the single strand (Climashield)...
Don't take all of the good spots! I won't be there until after lunch Friday. I need a couple of trees about 18 ft apart if I want to try my Noah 16.
Thanks for the update. Are you bringing any bugspray or sunscreen?
Forecast is warming up. Hopefully no rain Saturday.
I'm going to guess 2010 or 2011 since that was "pre-campground"? I still have my Neos overboots, so I don't have to hop as much.
I know the surgical rubber is more forgiving than regular rubber. My...
Probably warmer than carbon fiber socks and wool toed shoes. :)
FWIW, it's fleeting. Probably safer than being wedged between two bonfires yet still fleeting.
You don't want to see either of us sing or dance or juggle.
Self-deprecation is about all I have, which is better and more sanitary than self-defecation. Both can warm up a room. but the latter will...
Well we won't need waders for this one. :)I generally check a few different sites then compare their findings to Damascus. If Damascus is the same, I subtract about 10-12 degrees.
Roche and I...
The campground is a good thousand feet lower than that.
I've used that site before for Roan in the winter. I'll never bank on it again. It suggested 23 for a low when it turned out to 6.
I was...
Depends on which forecast. Weather.com suggests a couple of inches Friday and Saturday. Accuweather calls for less but colder.
Avoid synthetics so you can sit closer.
The same can be said of common variety tents set up by uneducated masses.
The really funny part would be later that day when they throw tomahawk boy over the cliff at Big South Fork then toss him his hatchet.
It is the southern end of the AT. Nothing wrong with that, but it isn't the southeast. This time of year, that is a hot and steep climb. The rest of the year, it's just a steep climb.
Hard to go...
Fontana is the southwest side.
A kayak trip with some sites with trees and some on islands. I've been looking for something like this.
If the roads are bad, maybe we could try Haw Ridge?
I was thinking about using my Epic 18X for a pulk!
The higher the wind is, the lower the tarp should be. With a lower ridgeline, you will be exposed to less windforce. That being said, if there is any terrain available, a berm or thicket will help ...
A diamond with two tie outs is a pretty robust option from a 9.5X9.5 tarp. I find the longer ridgeline to be of greater benefit than longer sides. If the weather gets rough, I just hang my hammock...
Why not just hang it in a diamond?
It looks like a one trick pony that would be more difficult to pack.
I left mine as it is. Open wide and it is a big single layer. Fold in half for a fractional double layer.Folded in half, it keeps me warm down to about 50. It's a good summer solution.
I imagine that the shelter mice will be anxious for visitors.
Just don't miss all of the other days by forcing this one. JC already has had about 5 inches this morning. It will be adding between now and Saturday. The wind in the mountain area could be a white...
I have a 35 degree synthetic bag and several cans of foam insulation, would that be enough for RHK?? Also, are we allowed to use the kitchen in the shelter?
It does go a little speedier without hiking poles and changing shoes all the time. But then, I only have 184 miles on my second map. :shades:
Where's the fun in that??
The less weigh and bulk allows the bank to compress much more easily.
The air trapped in the bag when you put it there at night is the same air you'll empty in the morning. The air in an air gap is replaced with the air from outside of your air gap. In other words...
If you kept rolling out of a TQ, you might have just needed a wider TQ. there are plenty of similarly temperature rated TQ options out there that cost less and weigh less as well.
I have a No...
+1 on VB clothing versus liner. You can still wear other clothing over VB clothing to stay warmer whereas a VB liner requires that you be wearing nothing or next to nothing to work.
