Sorry, no elk chili this year… maybe 2025 with some luck.
A good quality insulated Pac Boot works well. Take good care to water seal the leather uppers. My Salomons have lasted an eternity and fit the bindings on my snowshoes well. My Sorels don't take...
Check out the Yeti Hang, some of us head south for the snow.
Crossing my fingers so I can make it this year! Work is nuts and if all goes well early January I should be able to break free. … Or if it goes tumbling down…
A new Winterdream tarp will get a chance to prove itself this year :)
The Gear Sling is also quite handy. especially in cold weather so you have a spot for all the peeled off layers!
The 20 degree is ok for some (many? most?). That’s what I used until my 0 degree setup came along. Shug has some videos on layering, YMMV but that may be an answer.
Mmmmm, dowwn…
The cut of the hammock makes it Left, Right or Symmetrical. Doesn't matter if the netting is there or not. If you get the tie-outs, it'll be obvious which lay is cut. Mine's cut as a Right.
Oh,...
Almost 3 years ago I picked up one of Dutch's Hexon 1.7 Wide hammocks. Eventually two of them. I've been using one of them every night I'm not traveling for work since then, with a MyPillow travel...
Count me in!

Dare I ask? Should I bring elk chili again?
Plenty of trees, see you there!
I’ve never used a pad, always an UQ. But I’d buy another double layer DH Sparrow with no reservations if I needed.
My nightly hang for the past two years is a Dutchware extra wide, single layer. ...
Woot!!! I’m in!
Dutchware hookworms on lines that stay with the stakes. Easier to find the stakes this way, rather than lose them under rocks, leaves, snow, ... Is hard to misplace the tarp, but easy to misplace a...
I forget who but someone was asking about the foam pad I brought to the Yeti hang. It's on Amazon as "ALPS Mountaineering Foam Camping Mat" for about $17.
It's reasonably light, I left it full...
Weather was very cooperative! Just a brief shower before dawn Sunday. Friday night low around 27 degrees. Trails were crusty calling for spikes instead of snowshoes.
And about a dozen hammocks...
Clear Lake snow accumulation is now 7" after the rains. Gov't Camp forecast for Friday and Saturday is rain with low around 30, high 42. Hopefully there's enough accumulation on the path for the...
Still 10” snow reported by Snotel site at Clear Lake. I could be there Thursday afternoon if work doesn’t interfere and there’s help needed.
There's a hang south of Mt. Hood (10th Annual Yeti Hang - Jan 15-17 2021) if you're so inclined to snowshoe/pulk in about a half mile from parking. Last year was about 4' of snow just before the...
The UGQ 0 degree Zeppelin under quilt arrived just in time!
I was thinking of some elk chili...
Last year's hit was from the Pine Box Boys...
It's on my calendar!
I was fortunate enough to buy the Journey while the Journey II was also for sale. Dodged that one! Love my Journey Classic. The thing is a lightweight beast. My seam sealing job is a little messy...
Welcome to the forum from a Cascades foothills hammock hanger. My camping hammock is a double layer DreamHammock Sparrow, and nightly sleeper is a Dutchware’s Hexon 1.7 wide netless.
Crazy travel...
I’ll second the dialing in part. But after some fiddlin’ the tarp extensions work fine.
Shug must have an 11’ tarp. :) My 12’ tarp uses no ridge line with the Tensa extensions. The pin on the...
The Yeti hang last winter had heavy snows just before we hung in above freezing daytime temps. Unavoidably there were snow bombs of considerable size.
The weak point seemed to be ridgelines. ...
The Mtn 1.2 is very nice to sleep on, I'm interested to hear how the Mtn 1.7 works for you.
You didn't mention your size. I'm very comfortable at 6'0" and 230# with my dual-layer. 1.6oz HyperD outer, 1.2oz MtnXL inner layer. If I were to buy another I'd go the exact same way. Sparrow...
BLM lands weren’t an issue when I lived in Arizona.. Arizona Trust Land was a different story. But rules change with administrations. Best read up.
I could be up for a Friday/Saturday hang in December. First weekend won’t work though. Will have to make do with a 20 degree UQ since the 0 degree doesn’t arrive til end of the year. The 20 has...
This is a bit of a haul from me — about 12 hours — but with enough advance notice I could pull it off.
A hike into a base camp with day hike / snowshoe treks sounds interesting.
Also nice to use in damp conditions — fog, wet snow etc to protect the UQ from losing insulation. Very handy here in the PNW!
Finally able to purchase a NW Forest Pass, so time to plan some overnights in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness or areas east. Woot!
Head end, yes.
I use a ridgeline organizer for maybe a water bottle, place to put glasses and a battery bank.
For spare warm clothes I added a DH Gear Sling by my feet. It’s indispensable.
If you look at the UGQ section of the forum you’ll find a good article on topquilts as a sticky topic.
Depends on how you plan to use it.. The 1/32” is skinny but packs light. If I were to replace the clews I’d consider the next larger shock cord. Mine is under my nightly sleep hammock.
One day...
The HG Journey (the original version which is the only one sold by HG now) is worth a look. Since it has doors I've found no reason to consider a second tarp.
I use a full length snakeskin and...
Unattended hammocks left hanging are discourage if not disallowed at some sites, to keep animals from becoming entangled. Can’t say I’ve heard such a story though.
My nightly hang indoors still needs an underquilt. I made one from a Costco down quilt.
Outdoors I use a 20 degree underquilt, which was ok down to 14 unless I moved around. The UGQ Bandit can...
Middle Fork can be popular since they paved the drive. I‘ve seen a lot of campers along the road though if you don’t mind camping on the roadside. WA State campgrounds don’t accommodate tree...
FYI this event was last Spring, not Spring 2020...
I’ve not ditched the bed, but it hasn’t seen my sleepy head since last December.
It does say dispersed camping in small groups is allowed. I am sure there are plenty of spots we could find outside the camp grounds.
...
+1 on the spider straps with cinch buckles. At 240 lbs I’ve had poly straps slip more than once. Hasn’t been an issue since changing.
Whoopie slings work fine for me on my indoor hammock, but...
This weekend was certainly a Tarp Challenge for many... for those who asked where I picked up the spool of bank line, here you are.
My Hammockgear Journey took quite a few snow hits, including a...
