I've used the HF yellow straps a BUNCH. Great tree straps for marlinespike/whoopies
Thanks, PG! Enjoyed some hangs with forum members back in the day. I was browsing back through last year trying to find old threads to figure out where we had been previously.
Took my kids on a...
Just saying hello after a long hiatus. Was active years ago and met some great folks here. Glad to see the forums are still running!
um, why such a long top rail? Most of us are using one prefab section of 10 foot rail I believe, just cut in half so the swaged end will mate in the middle. my guess is that the extra four feet of...
My permanent indoor hang is based on a short piece of 2x4 mounted horizontally on each end, screwed into 2-3 studs with long drywall screws. Actual mount points are cheap harbor freight tie down...
Olddog, you can add me. Made mine a few months back and use it every day.
I whole-heartedly endorse this hammock. They're also available for about $20 at Academy Sports.
I added Whoopie's and it's SUPER lightweight now. This cheapie is more comfortable than ENO's to me,...
I have one too and like it a lot. Question though -- it's so big that I get a lot of material flopping down on my head on the diagonal. I have a small pillow I use to keep it pushed back, but was...
Last time i hammocked in the rain, i was able to wrap some painters plastic around the pack like a burrito and put under hammock/tarp. Dry as a bone the next day despite torrential downpours all...
tyvek is only water resistant. The blue poly is waterproof as long as it is intact.
Frankly I wouldn't get too crazy about the thread, since standard thread probably has about the same UV resilience as the blue poly itself.
This! My indoor points are 13ft and they work great!
However now I'm looking at the Brazilian XL cotton hammock from Hammocks.com which requires minimum of 14 feet, so I'm prolly going to have to...
Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner, but here's how I've been doing it. It's way more crude that Gary R's install but it works!

I'm not sure what you feel is crappy about it. I've owned one since March and slept in it several times. It's cheap, strong and comfortable. You could do a LOT worse for what it is. The only downside...
Had a great time! Thanks for the nice trip. Enjoyed meeting everyone very much! Didn't get pics of everyone or every rig, but most of 'em. Pics to enjoy:

We're a go. Will leave Greenville about 5pm hopefully, putting us at BF by 6:30. We'll try to get up to the main site before dark. See y'all there!
Siberian hitch on the first end, tarp hitch on the other (or an adjustable grip hitch). Same ones as in the Ray Mears Tarp Routine video. Truckers hitch is fine too but you can actually pull too...
Not that I noticed. I was aware of it and held the compass away when in use. They are super strong magnets though.:)
Rolloff, you wouldn't happen to be a copywriter/proofreader would you? (re: your ink)
Hi from the Greenville area!
Last trip we got about 3" rain the first night. I wrapped my pack in painter's poly (that I used to use as a groundcloth) -- wrapped it up like a burrito and put on ground under the hammock. It was...
Things are looking up for us to come.
Is anyone else planning to camp at the Burrell's Ford site Friday night (near the parking lot)? That's our plan since we'll arrive at dusk. Will pack up and...
The material itself is obviously just as vulnerable to UV as before, but I imagine you'll increase the longevity ever so slightly due to 1) the cat cuts decreasing wind flappage and 2) webbing...
WM poly tarp works. The main drawback is the difficulty of pitching it tight so it doesn't crinkle noisily in the wind.
As a result, Steve D inspired me to put Catenary Cuts on it.
Here's his...
a portion of my ham radio callsign.
I've had this happen my last 2 backpacking trips! First one was a brand new CamelBak Antidote with the new quick disconnect stuff and 1/4 turn mouth -- that stuff leaks like a firehose when it's...
This ^^
One time around the pole's handle is usually sufficient. If you're worried about it, tie a quick constrictor knot over your hand and drop it over the handle....
Grabbed one today myself and I'm very impressed! Very nice lay -- lots of room. Fabric is pretty heavy duty. It looks like a doggone satin sheet but feels like a heavy sail bag or something....
Yeah, I went with the BULA b/c I would be going backwards in terms of weight with the Expedition. My ENO with whoopies/straps is 1 lb and I've been using a GI Poncho as a tarp -- it's heavy (at 3lbs...
Just thought I'd let the HH subforum know I put my REI coupon to good use last weekend and grabbed a Backpacker Ultralight Zip. Been pretty impressed with it -- way more comfort than I expected based...
Once I discovered Harbor Freight's polyester tie-down straps it takes all the work out of finding tree huggers. They're $4 for a pair of 12' straps. One $4 set will make you 2 sets (4 straps) of...
Cool, that was pretty much my thinking, but if there was another method (with advantages) I wanted to add it to the toolkit.
One reason I like learning knots is because they're like free toys. It...
So Tom calls them "doohickeys" but they're tarp attachment prusiks. I noticed it's basically 2 turns worth of prusik knot but then the working ends are wrapped around the middle. This doesn't seem...
It seems to be fairly personal. My recent experience was with an 18*F night atop Mt. Sterling, TN in the Smokies.
I slept in an ENO Singlenest in a Marmot Sawtooth 15* Down bag atop a standard...
Agreed, the weakest point is the hardware attachment. But the screw heads are holding well. The hardware screws are into the stud on one end and just the 2x4 on the other end.
If anything will...
Sometimes you can help that tight fabric "spine" by smoothing it over with your feet. Draw your legs in and drag your heels over the hammock as you extend your legs -- sometimes it'll pull the ridge...
Yep, it's been good for some snoozin and such. It's in the man cave (more like man-cubby) so I have a lot more license for such shenanigans there. Plus we can slap some white paint on them and make...
Ok, here we go:

Welcome from Greenville. I'm another recent forum member as well. Been hangin for a couple years though. (only been hangin properly in the last year)
(was doin it wrong -- slapstraps and inline...
I use the adjustable grip hitch. This vid is the closest thing I found (skip to 4:22)

Quick release. Only tensions 1-way, but you only need to tension...
Thanks Lostinspace!
My converted 8 x 10 is 15oz.
I wanted to resurrect this thread and say thanks OP for the inspiration. Made my own Blue Cat Tarp today. First sewing project ever and learned a lot.
Started with a Harbor Freight 8 x 10 (which...
In! Happy Green Day!
Whoohoo, thanks streamline. On the calendar!
Thanks guys!
And to celebrate, I completed my first indoor hang installation last night!. Excuse the white legs please.
Camping is definitely good to go there -- did it several years ago. Cool place -- would be interested in a trip.
Welp, just hit a snag. Found out my son's opening day of little league (and team pics) are that Saturday morning. So the 2 nighter is out. However IF the game is done by mid-day, we still might try...
Cool, thanks.
Yeah, I'm jonesin for a "real" hammock myself. WBBB DL 1.1 would be ideal (I think) but thinkin hard about a HH BULA from REI if they send their 20% coupons out soon. Looking forward...
