I purchased a soldering iron for $9.99 and cut all my fabric on a 4'x8' sheet of drywall. Total for the whole setup was less than $20. I have cut many yards of fabric on it and it still works great.

I have a similar Kenmore and have found that if I increase the top tension way up, I get a better stitch on both sides. Especially while sewing the lightweight fabrics.

It is slightly more bulkier, but they make it so much easier to deploy in the wind.

Instead of pinning the fabric , have you ever used the small quilt clips? The clips seem a little simpler, and I won't keep pinning my finger to the fabric, lol.

I have done this on a few of my stuff sacks. I find sewing the stuff sack and channel and then melting a hole through the channel and grosgrain very efficient. It makes a very clean hole.

I would say go with vertical baffles. Down will shift to the center on horrizontal baffles and won't keep your sides warm.
