I’m going in a few days and can report back. There was a decent trickle on the way up 3 months ago, and less rain then

Love seeing those laurel blooms! Nothing like that out in WNC just yet.
Last week I did an overnight in Nantahala outside Hayesville, NC. 28 miles and 7300ft in 2 days [emoji28]

Still using ironwire as a ridgeline. (Just you know, “because”) i recently switched guylines to 1.5 Pariah reflective cord and lineloc V’s and liking them.
Perhaps I will be able to donate my old...
The new parking permits are painless but seems like theyre serious about it. I printed mine but there’s a few kiosks listed on the site. I had a trip end on March 1st with a car at Big Creek (kinda...

Just for more dry real estate. I sometimes fantasize about how light a bivy could be and then I think about rain and realize those people are total suckers!
Also I only carry 4 stakes - doors are...
I only do short trips, but live in the area. Agree that temps in the teens are possible, but not regular.
My vote: no change, suffer fest. If you know how to use the gear, you won’t die or get...

A couple votes for “it can be done below freezing” - I’ll give it a go! Thanks. I’d only ever done insulated inflatable on the ground, but curious if ccf will work for me

If you use a partial UQ below freezing what have you successfully used for insulation under your feet and lower legs? 1/8 inch GG thinlight? 1/4 inch? Regular old CCF like a switchback? Cheers

I am so grateful for your pictures. Makes me love living on earth

Takes 3 minutes to install. You can make one with knots in 5 minutes or longer if you splice

Going to need a head-to-head comparison of gram and cubic mm difference between an extra 10’ of strap (15’ x 2) vs dog bone [emoji41]

20d economy UQ and MYOG gathered end are spot on. 1.6 MTN or 1.6 Hexon either probably good
Get some mesh and shock cord with your rip stop order and make yourself a bottom entry / “fronkey”...
Major miles, nice job. 2nd pic is needle ice! Mind was blown my first siting. I’ve definitely felt that wind on shortoff / chimneys… [emoji3063]

I would say using the sock probably makes technique/gaps in the UQ less likely.
Did you confirm those temps with a thermometer? Could be colder

Don’t quote me but I believe r-value only deals with conductive heat loss and leaves out convection, which is the cold butted killer.

Not always possible, but you can maximize your chances with good site selection: orientation and tarp set up for ventilation, away from bodies of water, under trees

Absolutely. The math gets very strange after you go through the initial sequence. The volume of your home quilt storage starts skyrocketing while the volume of your pack storage space goes down goes...
Here to confirm the indisputably correct sequence:
the pad you already have (lasts approximately 1 night)
the bag you already have (truthfully keep as long as you like)

20 TQ

I think in that case you should go for some heavy hitters… best views close to your route would be to take 26 to Blue Ridge Parkway. Along BRP you could do as many shorter hikes as you had time for,...
Haven’t been but that’s definitely in the forest. Seems like majority of sites are first come so hopefully you could find something good
