Did you ever go to the winds? (also coming from NE)
Wow! Thanks for sharing this. I'm just now getting started on research for a Winds trip. I came to the forum, of course, to see what experience others had when hammocking.
I'd love to pick your...
Always jealous of the CO hangers! Welcome.
I'm a Kansan who loves hammock camping, and loves the BWCA!
Welcome to the forum!
Anywhere near Roanoake? I don't know VA all that well, but the "Triple Crown of Virginia" is on my list of places to backpack.
Thanks, again, for the great trip report! As I mentioned elsewhere, I'd like to explore this area of the park, possibly this year or next. I've always enjoyed putting in and getting out at the...
I've camped in the Seagull/Alpine area. And I've camped on Clearwater with day trips to Pike, Mountain, Caribou, Little Caribou, Pine and Johnson Falls. The latter trip was definitely preferred, but...
Following! Maybe others have intel on this area.
I hope you might still be around to answer a couple questions.
First, I'm considering paddling in this area in the near future. Three options I'm considering are as follows:
1) Cross Bay to...
My first hammock was a 9-footer from startup Outdoor Vitals. It was enough to get me started, but definitely too short for a guy my size (6'1 and 2-something or other).
My second hammock is a...
Welcome to the forum! Welcome to hammock camping! Welcome to Kansas City!
Do you mind me asking what you've decided on as your FIRST hammock?
This trail is high on my list of places to go. It may be my one "big" trip of this calendar year. As such, I've not been, but have spent plenty of time on research.
It seems clear to me that...
It was a tough, wet year in Kansas. My favorite site for primitive campin in Kansas is Woodridge, on the west side of Clinton Lake.
I'd like to get to the Elk River Trail.
Woodridge (only correcting the spelling in case it helps in searching for information) has a loop that's a little more than four miles. It really is the nicest place for primitive camping that I've...
Whether it's Colorado, or PNW, I'm convinced that it will be worth waiting until the weeknd after Labor Day.
The end of the week/weekend after Labor Day is also an option. Probably the better one when it comes to crowds.
Four Pass Loop at Maroon Bells is also still in the running. The holiday likely...
Hello, Northwesterners! I'd like to take a big (for me) adventure this year around Labor Day, plus or minus a week. One of the finalists in my pre-planning is a 3-night trip around Mt. Hood on the...
I also have the HG Netted, and have similar feelings about it as IronFist's.
I think you mentioned three very good options in the original post: Dutch Chamelon, Dreamhammock Raven, and HammockGear...
If I was looking for an inexpensive setup right now, this is where I'd go. I trust Spiguyver, and I love the price and apparent features of the Ridge.
I love the high elevations of Colorado, as well as the gorgeous lakes of the BWCAW, Minnesota!
Welcome to the group! I love hammock camping in the BWCA!
What a great place to live!
Happy Birthday! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I can't wait to get an Econ 20 Burrow to go with my Econ 20 Incubator!
Great post to Oregonhikers, Leiavoia! Can't wait to make my trip out there!
I wonder if you weren't on the trail at the same time as "Darwinonthetrail". Disclaimer, I'm not a fan of Darwin, but I did watch his recent video on this trail because I'm ready to go do this one.
...
That's awesome, Clutch! We found dozens of little smallies off that ledge, and left almost all of them right there for you!
Johnson Falls wasn't spectacular itself, but the journey there was...
When I upgraded my hammock from a 9' (way too short) Outdoor Vitals, I came down to a similar choice as the original poster.
I think this whole thread sums up the fact that both are great vendors,...
Kansan here, and so jealous of those of you in Colorado. A great place to be outdoors, with so many options, and such great weather!
Welcome to the forum!
Gotta tell ya.... when I posted this, I hoped it would get a notice from Shug.
Thanks for chiming in, O Lord of Lolligag!
At home, I use an NRS Chinook. I wasn't going to pack my own jacket, however, and this is what the outfitter supplied.
On June 13, 2019, our group of six paddlers entered the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness by Entry Point 62 at Clearwater Lake. Our group included two under the age of 12, which informed our...
I'm returning the ENO to REI, and ordering a summer sock from Dutch!
I can't imagine there's a better value for hammock insulation than this!
I own the Hammock Gear Netted Hammock. I've spent some time in it, but not yet overnight.
In my shopping, I thought it was most comparable to the half-zipped. I think the HG is a great hammock....
Welcome! As a Kansan, I'm completely jealous of your geography.
I bought an ENO Guardian SL Bugnet to use with my OutdoorVitals 9' hammock. This is a small hammock that my children use.
I put the bugnet on with the small opening at the foot end of the hammock,...

Hammock Gear sells their full-size, netted Hammock for $115. I think this is a fantastic, full-featured hammock.
My first real hammock camping adventure! I was in Rocky Mountain National Park, expecting lows around 40 degF. I sat in the quilt and broke the quilt suspension! I was honestly scared in that moment....
Jeff-oh, your explanation was helpful, thanks. The guy lines come already laced through all three holes in the plastic. I, clearly, had never used a piece of hardware like this.
Can anyone explain to me how to use the line tensioners that come with a Chill Gorilla fortress tarp?
Additionally, what alternative would you recommend?
I'll sing the same tune that several others have. For simplicity and lack of hardware, go with webbing to continuous loop with J-Bend or Becket Hitch. I use a Becket hitch.
Whoopie slings add...
I opened my "Compass" app, and couldn't find the level function.
My iPhone has a separate app called "Measure". Measure includes a level.
According to iPhone "Measure" my thumb to index angle is...
I'm sure the question has been asked before, but I'm probably not the only one that has it...
Is the double ended stuff sack large enough to hold an 11-foot hammock and an underquilt?
Thanks.
That doesn't sound right, at all. A 40degF Phoenix Econ goes for $90. To spend $180, you'd have to go to a 0degF Incubator Econ.
It looks like I was the first to review sites in Rocky Mountain National Park!
I only reviewed the two in which I stayed. I feel like the information I shared could help steer someone toward one...
I agree with this. One day, I'd like to take a multi-day trip through Glacier National Park. In a system like this, where only limited permitted camping is allowed, campsite reviews are extremely...
I just thought I'd add for information that my order placed on Black Friday shipped on 1/7 and arrived on 1/10. I got an Econ Phoenix 20
Thanks, Harry and HG!
I assumed a loop just meant ending at the same place you started. CDT Loop out of Grand Lake, CO. Maroon Bells Four Pass Loop out of Aspen, CO. Northern Loop in Glacier National Park.
All amazing,...
Econ Phoenix 20, ordered 11/23, shipped today!

I did it in August 2007. Absolutely no problem finding suitable trees. I'll see if I can't find more information from my trip for you. We took the counter-clockwise approach.
The exposed section...
