Yeah, I definitely will need to practice this. A lot.
I figured the hammock may be lower than usual. Then again, that means a shorter distance to fall if I screw things up.

Looks like a cool trip. Shows that the Solo can be used in a lot of different ways.
Still... your last pic showing your hammock tied to two trees looked so right.

ok. try not to laugh at this
It's my attempt to illustrate how you'd use a dog bone to attach two stakes to one of the lines coming from the solo stand.
Am I close?
I'm afraid I can't find your report. Do you have a link to it? Thanks...
yes, we looooooove technology :scared:
thanks for your input
Thanks... The sand should at least be dry on the NC beach.
This helps a lot... Thank you.
Hello fellow hangers!
From time to time, my backpacking pals - all ground dwellers, unfortunately - plan an adventure that will be treeless for camping (the beach, mainly).
I cannot bear the...
How does one hang around Grassy Ridge? Best I remember, it had some straggly bushes - no full-fledged hammock-friendly trees....
It's a narrow side trail to the Jones Falls in Tennessee. I'm not remembering a good hanging spot right at the falls.
North of there, you pass a nice flat area next to the river - perfect for...
Thanks! I'll be interested to hear what you find out.
Thanks, Shug
Thanks.
Having someone in the hammock would be helpful.
My backpacking pals are all ground dwellers, but maybe a short lie in my hammock while I tweak the quilts will help enlighten them!
You sketch illustrates exactly how I was thinking - to put the longer quilt closest to the hammock, even though the shorter one is rated longer. Thanks.
Camping right before Halloween in what I expect will be 30s (or worse) at night.
I have a 40-degree full-length underquilt and a 20-degree shorter underquilt (both Hammock Gear).
Since it's car...
Left-handed.
I hang feet right. Just seemed right for me.
Designated sites aren't my first choice, for many of the same reasons you mention.
But all my hiker pals are ground-dwellers, so it happens.
I've always managed to find usable trees at or near the...
Good to know. Thank you
Thank you!
Thanks for the info.
They have some sites that you can reserve in advance, but most are first come. And those seem to be the ones with the most trees.
I'm going to be doing some trail work on the AT nearby... Easier to get in the night before when the meetup time is 8:30 a.m.!
That being said... what's the loop route?
I'm planning to hang at Standing Indian Campground next month. It's in North Carolina, not far from Franklin, NC.
Anyone taken their hammock there? Any suggestions for which sites are particularly...
I had this issue last year on the AT (just north of the GA/NC border). Lots of trees, but they were either very young (and not ready to host a hanger) or dead. My 3-day, 2-night hike became an...
Hello.
I have a trip to Wales planned and I'm going to do some hanging at Lone Wolf.
Anyone camped there? Suggestions for the best spot(s) for hammocks? Other tips?
And, any other places in...
Hey, y'all.
I had no problem installing Dutchware's Peak Shelf on my newer hammocks; they already have D-rings in the right places.
But my oldest (and still primary) hammock doesn't have D...
This is an excerpt from a recent report of bear activity on the AT.
"... a backpack, hanging from a hammock strap, was bitten leaving puncture holes thru all layers of a pair of folded pants....
I put my hammock, straps, tarp and stakes at the bottom of my pack. There's a zipper at the bottom that lets me access them without affecting the rest of the stuff in the pack (good if it's raining;...
I think the Tato stand would be lighter . . .
from Tensa: "If your current trekking poles weigh 20oz (567g), the additional weight is only 2.9lbs (1320g)."
"only" 2.9lbs? I think it'd be more appropriate to say "A WHOPPPING" 2.9lbs
...
Yup... I'll be watching Shug's video a few times and practicing its techniques before I head out again...
Hey, all.
Just did an overnight on the AT, from N. Ga to S. North Carolina.
I planned it as a two-nighter, but on the second day all I encountered was dead trees!
I'd heard there'd been fires...
I missed this post previously; glad I just saw it!
I'm hoping to convert some backpacking pals to hammocking; your book sounds like an excellent tool to do so.
I look forward to ordering a copy or...
Thanks, y'all. Great advice.
And I even got a response from Shug!
I just did an overnight (no snow, thankfully, but it was cold!). I hung the hammock lower than usual so I could hang the tarp lower than usual. And I staked the tarp closer in than I usually do so...
I bought my gear hammock (doubles as a pack cover) from Jacks. I clip it on my hammock line; still tweaking how it's set up in relation to my hammock.
But I do like having stuff in there instead of...
I like using a gear hammock. It's easier to get stuff out if I need it overnight (as compared to in my pack).
I do hang higher now with the gear hammock. But not dramatically so. The gear hammock...
Funny, I have the opposite problem with my prusik (on a continuous ridgeline): It gets so tight it's hard to move.
Periodically, I untie and re-tie it.
How many loops did you do on your prusiks?...
This looks very promising - first setup for a hammocker and her dog I've seen that could work for both!
Tempting.
I actually hung at Crowders two weekends ago (with a half-dozen ground dwellers - good people, tho :shades:). Nice campsite, nice facilities, easy hike from the parking lot.
It was...

Thanks, all.
I put my order in for some glowire...
OK. So I went and got me a cuben tarp w/doors from Hammock Gear. Woo-hoo!
Now I'm wondering about the best guylines.
Do I simply take the cords off its predecessor (an ENO tarp) and use...
Story about the guy whose company makes these: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/business/article37531521.html
Ummm. what's a "PU tarp"?
I set up my tarp out back so I could treat it w/Permethrin (and because I need the practice setting it up!)
Once I finished spraying, I realized I had it up inside-out - at least, the logo was on...
