Hi all,
Looking at doing old loggers path in loyalsock state forest this weekend. I know there’s been a lot of rain. Any reports on conditions, and water levels? Especially curious about the...
Popcorn fool is right. You’ll be shocked at how much more comfortable an underquilt is over a pad in the hammock.
That said, I’d go to Dutchware, get an 11’ gathered end (with continuous loops,...
Double post
I used Fronkey’s tutorial post. It’s stickied in the the DIY sticky sub forum near the to-. Here’s a direct link. It’s pretty simple.

The way to save your frame is to run another horizontal along the bottom, and add some crossbraces from one of the horizontals to each vertical. At that point you are into screws or bolts, and I’m...
My first ones used the four corner. The fix to make it all work were prussic loops on each end of the ridge line that I feed the shock cord through. Works similar to the “triangle thingies”. Cinched...
This is why I always leave my UQ connected. I pack up pillow and TQ, then unhook one side of the hammock, and start stuffing hammock, UQ, and bug net, until I get to the other end. To deploy, I just...
I have two diy bottom entry. One of these days I’ll get around to building one out of the lighter weight mesh’s that were not available when I built mine.
This is one of those things where it’s always going to be personal preference. Personally, having used both, I will always use a bottom entry. It’s so much easier to get in and out. If the shock cord...
I have the .77 MTN silnylon. I keep meaning to make a tarp out of it. It seems strong, and does have a grid. Definitely tougher then the .9 membrane. I have not tested it for stretch when wet, and...
I don’t think the dwr is necessary. It doesn’t add strength. It’s just a chemical coating that fills the weave at a scale to repel water. Lots of people make indoor hammocks out of cotton, which...
If you have a balloon framed house, chances are you also have plaster and lathe walls. Plaster and lathe can screw up the stud finders ability to sense a difference in capacitance where studs are...
Ya. That was my thinking. I’ve done a membrane tarp. Laminating the reinforcements on wasn’t hard. Slightly messy, but the finish was clean.
I’ve got some of the .77oz MTN sil to play with. I can’t find much about others using it. It’s surprisingly strong, and seems to have less stretch then .9 membrane silpoly. It definitely stretches...
I’ll take the pocket rocket.
You’re paying shipping on either the materials or a finished product, so that’s a wash. If I buy more expensive fabric, that’s a wash also, since the vendor will charge an up charge on a finished...
Outside the labor, I’m not seeing the math on this one. I’ve never had a tarp cost $110 to make. I don’t have exact figures from my own builds, but a 12’ winter tarp kit from RSBTR in 1.1 silpoly is...
I have an 11x9’6 rectangle with no cat cuts in 1.1 silpoly and an 11x 7’6 rectangle with cat cuts in membrane silpoly. I love the weight of the of the smaller tarp, but wish I hadn’t done the cat...
Gotta agree with silver surfr here. Forthe weight vs price point, I’d rather mod Costco down throws and layer them. At 40oz and $150 (on sale for half price) for a 30 degree bag, I think $60 of...
I leave my net and my UQ attached the entire time. I just bundle the whole thing into a stuff sack, starting at one loop and ending at the other. Makes deployment easy. Never understood why people...
Medium and heavy weight muslin in wide up to crazy extra wide is available from theatrical fabric supply places. Check rosebrand.

They look like a pea pod system. Possibly functional. Pea pods were a Speer thing, and some people still mod sleeping bags to do it. It’s very restrictive of your lay. Definitely a cold weather...
They definitely work The grommets rip out pretty easily though, so plan for that. You can sew on pull outs, use a stone bundled in the edge of the tarp to loop around, or something similar.
Weight vs $ becomes a very tight game when dealing with summer weight gear. For winter gear the weight vs cost is a pretty clear trade off, if you can afford it. Hugh quality down in bulk vs heavier...
My wife and I will lounge in my 11’ hexon xl. We lay opposite directions on the same diagonal. Works for hanging out together in camp. We could never sleep that way though.
Dutch sells special Whoopie hooks and a spreader bar for side by side hammocks

Bunch of photos in this thread:

I’d get a zip in bugnet. My first diy hammock was a Hennessy copy with a zippered net. It’s the kiddos now. He is an active sleeper. I once found his hammock upside down with him curled up in the...
I was writing the same thing about Dutch’s options. I missed that you were in Melbourne though.
Ahh... makes sense now. The tarp is an economics vs weight vs bulk discussion. The grizbeaks cloud it a little further. Silpoly costs less, but weights more. Ruben weighs less, but takes a little...
What kind of tarp are you making with 5 yards of fabric? The only possible design would be an asymmetric, which needs around 4 yard. A hex takes a minimum of 7 yards, but you are talking about grizz...
The JRB 11x10 tarp has to be set up with the ridge running the 10’ length to close the ends off as doors. The 10’ edge has 4 ties outs, while the 11’ wide only has 3 with catcuts. If you look at the...
I’ve used a pad in a double layer hammock with a simple diy polyfil UQ, once upon a time on a one week long trip. The CCF pad mostly kept me warm, but the UQ wrapped up around my shoulders, and added...
Ahh... I missed that the first time. Cheap and heavier, look at amazon. Lots of options there. The others mentioned are all good. The asyms are very minimalist, but can serve if you have good site...
If you are hanging both under the same tarp with a spreader bar the hex option isn't going to be a great option. I'll vote the 12x12 Noah also. REI has their own version also. There are a bunch of...
and a happy hanging new year.
2nd the fronkey. Even simpler, is sew two panels of noseeum together, sewpockets into each corner, drape the whole thing over your ridgeline, and fill the pockets with stones.
Personally I prefer...
I sticks ok... what works best, is to stick a patch on both sides of the hole. That way the tape sticks to itself and seals the hole.
Tenascious tape also. If you want a permanent fix, use a scrap of xenon and glue it over the hole with seam sealer. Xenon is a silpoly yes, use silent, or similar silicone.
You can try it. I’m not optimistic that you could get it to conform to the shape the hammock takes when you lie in it, just by clipping the climashield on. If the UQP can be snugged up pretty tight,...
I’ve definitely had Pu coated tent flys, and back packs go bad. The PU coating starts to get sticky, and lose its water resistance. Then the coating starts peeling/flaking off. The underlying fabrics...
Not sure why they think your tarp is inadequate. 8x10 is fine on a 10’ hammock. General wisdom is that tarp ridge length=hammock length. It allows you to snug the hammock up tighter to the ridge of...
I can’t think of any advantage to not having an opening. It doesn’t hurt anything. My first hammock I made was double layer. When I started using an UQ with it I never experienced an issue.
I keep mine in a stuff sack along with my stake bag (straps with beetle buckles). I coil the straps, and put them in the bag. Stakes go into a smaller bag inside the strap bag. Keeps the straps...
Figure 8 as others say. I’ve put figure 8s in small cord that I’ve actually tried to get out after they were loaded. No dice on untying them... it works on shock cord also.
The overhand would work...
That’s my guess also. Maybe check out the “faux baffle” technique for the Costco quilts. It may allow someway to get a differential in. Are your baffles running across, or along the length of of the...
Yup! I started with a kelty Noah. It keeps you dry. If you treat PU stuff well, and dry it out before storage, it will last a long time. There’s definitely a place for. If you’re not concerned about...
That’s REI’s knockoff of the Kelly Noah. It’s PU coated. You can tell because there a coating on one side. Silnylon and silpoly are not coated, but are totally saturated. The silicone goes all the...
This is what I’ve done. Only issue I’ve had with cold feet was when we were car camping this fall, and temps dropped 10 degrees lower then predicted, and wind hit 40 mph gusts, and my tarp wasn’t...
Give it time. Next will be hammocks, then tarps, then from scratch quilts, eventually you’ll start looking at backpacks, wind shirts, and other stuff. Good luck.
Yup. I learned it the hardway with a set of buckles and straps I bought from Dutch. I've switched to beetle buckles.
