Japanese (Kanto) winter hang
Here gaging interest. We had a hang this summer which was (albeit unbearably hot) absolutely wonderful. And from one extreme, I want to jump into the other.
Date and location is up in the air, but hopefully a weekend in December/January and in the Kanto area.
This is obviously open to anyone, and everyone is welcome to join!

Plan A (Gangaharasuri): Just read a recent trail report that said the nearby water source is frozen and I don’t particularly want to lug 5l of water on a train and then bus... perhaps a future plan in the spring or after a heavy dump of snow (crossing fingers)?
Plan B (Kuratake): Also in Yamanashi but more convenient to travel than A. The site is nearby a stream but no views until the next day when climbing up to Mt. Kuratake (981m) and ridge walking most of the day (no water source on the ridge). It’s an area active with black bears but we should be ok if we take necessary precautions.
Plan C (Kumotori): Okutama and the highest peak in Tokyo. Easy travel to trail head, popular with reliable water sources. Established campsite (1750m) which will unfortunately close for good at the end of March this year.
Question: Have you guys experienced Cold weather camping before? And would you want to tackle 2000m+ mountain like Kumotori or Daibosatsurei in the winter?
I’m personally happy with B and will definitely plan a trip to Kumotori before the little lodge closes it door.

Hello alt.thomas,
Yeah, sounds like B is the better option here. Perhaps once that water source opens up, we could do A. We just need to be careful about the bears. Is there anything in particular you recommend for that?
Also, Kuratake is close to where we went camping in the summer, isn’t it? It would be our first time winter camping in hammocks, but we have underquilts and top quilts rated for -10C, which I believe should be enough.

Yup, it’s around the same place but different station. The hike in is really simple and short and I was wondering if that was ok? Can start late (also a 7-11 nearby). The next day will be really hiking.
Here is the place i was thinking we can camp - photo was taken April of last year...

There’s flat areas for tent and plenty of trees to hang.
Water source which should still be flowing, else walk back 30 min and pull water from a pond.

Re bears: I’ll bring a bear line and we can hook up our bags. Another point is to have our meals away from where we sleep. Nothing major to worry about.
