Are under quilt + top quilt combinations generally heavier than sleeping bags?

I'm trying to compare my Mountain Hardware +32 sleeping bag and closed cell foam pad vs a JRB setup...

Looks like the JRB setup is 1048g and my current setup is 853g.

However, the temp rating is somewhat lower (20-25 for the UQ and 25-30 for the TQ).

I think I can swallow that as it will keep me somewhat warmer.

I've also thought about going with a higher rated sleeping setup (say +40) and wearing down pants and shorts and wool socks.

This way in the morning when the sun comes up and it jumps to 50 degrees I can just hop out of bed and start hiking.

Thoughts?

There are a number of ways you can go. Just looking at a tq and uq from Hammock Gear or Underground quilts you would be pretty close to the same weight.
I've got for 20deg- 1043grams
or 40deg- 765grams

And if you want lighter stuff, you can always get custom with these guys using either Momentum50 or 7D material. It would probably save you around 200grams.

the combo gets lighter when you go 3/4 or 2/3 under quilt route.

GoLite makes an awesome TQ for about $199 that's 1 lb 5 oz and is down rated to 20* and Warbonnet makes the yeti which will keep you toasty warm and is a 3/4 UQ and is under a lb ! I think it's also under $200 too ! A little pricy but under 2 lbs and I've had this combo down to nine degrees ! You may want some down booties though !

Another two cents grand trunk makes a sweet hammock sleeping bag now ! That's all !

Comparisions should stay apples to apples vs other fruit....In the three season range there is little difference between vendors for similiarly sized quilts... going to summer models JRB also has sets in the in the 880 gram range also....And yes fractionals by any vendor, including JRB, can improve on that also.

Back to the original question....In an equal temp range a single bag with a girth of 58-62 inches, normal range will weigh less than a quilt set with a combined girth of 88-100 inches... The issue is that a single bag will not fully insulate a sleeper in a hammock...So the point of comparision is mute when minimum acceptable function is included.

For a real comparison you would have to include sleeping bag + pad. That makes a lot more sense.

+1 That's how I look at it. I consider my TQ my sleeping bag and my UQ my sleeping pad since they are performing the same function, bottom insulation.
