Durability, and multi-use nature of what is being packed.
Weight - size - use of items....all gets looked at. I don't worry about half of an ounce.
Cost is also factored in to the thought process.
Most of my backpacking experience comes from basecamping while elk hunting. In a few weeks I'll be hiking into the mountains a few miles, setting up camp, then day hiking a few miles from basecamp to hunt each day. A thru hiker obviously has a different mission than I do.
I weigh everything. However, I'll be walking into basecamp carrying nearly 45 lbs. This includes the clothes I'll be wearing, 13 lbs of food, and 10 lbs of hunting gear. My gear spreadsheet is a continual work in progress. I enjoy analyzing it, trying new things, and making changes. I'll probably never stop.
This will be my first time not sleeping on the ground (or a cot) in the backcountry and I'm pretty excited.
Bulk for me... I don't hike so weight is not so much of a concern. Motorcycle camping especially camping with two.
If riding solo, the bike's 2 side cases, the rear trunk and tank bag will hold just about everything for weeks on end. The fishing rod, tarp poles, camping chair and generator will be strapped down to the back seat.
