Scouter in the ATL
Hi everyone, I figure I have lurked long enough; I have been reading the forums everyday for a couple months now ;-) I have definitely learned a lot from all the helpful posts, but I am just a newbie hanger (12 or so nights). I primarily camp with my son's scout troop, and currently I have only infected my son with the hammock bug, but I am working on the other adults. We have a campout in early February near Blairsville, which should be a good chance to show folks that hammocks aren't just for fair weather :-).
Great forum!

Welcome to the forum from just north in Ringgold. I am also a scouter and have finally convinced the other leaders in the troop that hammocks are the way to go. I also have a crew and almost everyone of them have hammocks. Just give it time and I believe that they will come around.

I have a particularly obstinate friend who was a ground-dweller for 30 years. He would talk to me for hours, even days, about how hammocks were not a viable camping system. "Trust me, I have thirty years' experience."
One night we arrived in the Adirondacks - it was raining like cats and dogs. "Sleep in the shelter," he insisted. "You're gonna get wet and miserable in that hammock. Don't even try to set up your hammock in this storm." He didn't even want to pitch his tent because the storm was a real gully-washer. Five minutes later, I'm laying high and dry in the hammock. In the morning, he was the wet and miserable one. I think that night turned him - we got five inches of rain and I slept like a log, dry as a bone.
Now he's a hanger, and he talks for hours, even days, about how a 3/4 underquilt on a hammock is not sufficient for winter camping. "Trust me, I have thirty years' experience," he says.

Woo hoo! Good luck! I was able to convert our troop after one rainy campout where only those in hammocks stayed dry (mostly because we weren't sleeping in 1 inch of water!).

As another Eagle I'm hoping my three year old will be hanging come time for Scouting. Keeping him confined to a tent at night is tough enough at this point...and that's the only time I go to the ground these days!
