Hey everyone! I would really like to start getting to know more hangers in the Southern Oregon/Northern California area. I live in Grants Pass and plan on organizing some group hangs for weekend warriors in the area more often. If you live in the area and are interested please reply to this thread. I love getting to know more hangers and seeing everyones setups. Lets hang and talk hammocks!!:cool:

There are some dead spots in America where group hangs rarely occur or have minimal attendance. You may have found one!
One such dead spot is the Adirondacks. Despite this OP's insistence that he expected nearly 50 people would want to attend an Adirondacks group hang, nothing has happened in the last 1.5 years, and nothing probably ever will happen. I think I might hold the record for "largest group hang in the Adirondacks," when I had five people show up! Of course, two of them were my sons.

I live in Nor Cal, near mount lassen, so, actually fairly close to you! i am an extreme newbie, and would love to attend a group hang! i have so many questions!
I would try to make it happen. It's about 8 hours from me, but I was just up there earlier this year hanging and had a blast.
I have so many answers! I also have all kinds of different suspension systems, cook kits, and water filtering. I would love to hang and talk hammocks!Quote:

Agree.....We need to get a group going here....this area is so fantastic for hanging.

The best time line I can do is Late Feb. Puppy will be old enough to leave in the house and not to much of a pain for the wife to look after.
Agree on the gear....I am going to setup this weekend on my deck...we are supposed to have 3 days of snow next week....25 degrees at the low.

You will definitely want an under quilt. Synthetic or down, either will suffice it just depends on the amount of weight you want to carry. I'm a cold sleeper so I always take extra layers. A tarp to keep any weather and wind off you. Other than that..... a great attitude lol!Quote:

I can make about a mile hike in if that works for ya. Excited about a group hang. I have never been camping there so I have no idea where to go or what would be open. Going to look on the internet for ideas.
I'm ready for the snow next week...porch mode until it starts. Testing a new stove...a Jet Boil clone. Camp Chef Stryker...half the cost of my Zip and bigger. I prefer wood stoves.

Hey there Sunny Bear. I'm at the southern Willamette Valley but one of my favorite spots is the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness, which is pretty close to you. If interested give me a shout.
Some of us more northern might be up to join you guys, too. We have a number of hangers in the mid to northern OR and southern WA locales and some of us may be willing to do a road trip to explore more southern reaches. :laugh:

I'm in Ashland and currently researching my first hammock. I would love some advice and insight and to check out some different gear!
Lots of choices out there. Some people go with off the shelf or cheaper hammocks to start, to see if they like it. The most important thing is your tarp and warmth system cause you can hang in any hammock. If you’ve done it before though and know you want to invest I would recommend a cottage vendor such as Trailheadz or Dutch. The way I feel is buy once and be happy but that’s me. If you like camping, once you get in a hammock you won’t want to go back to the ground. I personally go with 11 ft hammocks where most off the shelf ones are about 9 to 9.5 ft. I suggest looking up Shug on YouTube, very detailed and knowledgeable videos.Quote:

Hey Everyone, I live in the SF Bay area (east bay), and have not camped since I moved here from AZ 4 years ago. I know, tragic! Would love to get outside more this year, but am a stranger to these parts (plus no longer have a truck). Anyone in this thread knowledgeable enough to propose a place for a group hang?
Just moved to Northern California Chico area and would like to get together for hiking or hanging anytime.

It is easy to get caught in the mire of trying to find a date/location that works for everyone as there will not be a scenario which works for all people. So you just kind of need an "if you build it, they will come" mentality.
When I started ours down here in SoCal the same situation had been happening for years. I basically just set a couple dates at a campsite I knew generally had availability and made plans for myself and a buddy to show up, then posted the dates on here and said if anybody wants to come let me know. We ended up with 12 people total but that grew. I think our biggest year since then was around 60 people.
Point being, I would recommend just setting a date with a buddy and seeing what happens. Worst case scenario, you get in a camping trip.
If all else fails, feel free to come on down to our hang in October.

How are the trees in lake almanore or butt lake ? I camped there a long time ago . Ground dweller ! Finding good trees around here is harder that you would think . I'm in north Napa.Quote:

I am the organizer of the SoCal Hangers and have been lurking in this thread for quite a while.
If I may offer some wholly unsolicited advice (feel free to tell me to bugger off), my experience is that trying to get people on the same page for a date and location before booking a date and location hasn't been all that fruitful historically.
I can only say what worked for our group. Hopefully it is helpful.
When I went to host the first SoCal Hangers hang I saw there were lots of attempts to do so but (as far as I can recall) they all kind of fell apart because an time momentum was starting up for a date one or two interested people could not go then everybody would go back to starting from scratch.
What I did was to set a date and location, announce it, and let everybody work towards that goal. It did not work for everybody interested but it worked for enough to get the ball rolling. Then, when we did it the next year it was more solid so more people showed up.
I think we started with 12 people and over the years the largest we have had was around 60.
Pandemic logistics kind of put us in a rebuilding phase so we only have 15 people lined up for the hang in a couple of months but I assume the number will grow as we get closer. It always does.
I would say to set a location and date and see what happens. You can always cancel it if there is not enough interest a couple of weeks out. The most important thing, in my experience, is to get things going and make sure the experience is hospitable to all types of folks. Even if you only end up with ten or so people, the next year you will have 20 because at that point there is proof of concept.
Best of luck to you all. I hope you can get something going. I'd love an excuse to go to NorCal.
In the meantime, feel free to come join us in April if you like.
