I use short bits for mini whoopie slings, like 6" or 10" ones, and use them as key fobs and flashlight lanyards.

Thanks everyone for your comments - I made a soft shackle last night with the diamond/lanyard knot - which turned out to be nice, and small. Then I made a nacrobiner, similiar in concept, but really no bury.
Ridgeline is next - I think I am going to at least replace it on my DIY HH, and DIY WBBB. The gather-end, and my TL double can be left with paracord.
Mini-whoopie slings is an interesting idea.... bury should be a lot smaller by fid length since they are non-weight bearing. Similar in concept, I was looking for something to hang my pack off the ground.
Thanks flatline for the links too
To keep your pack off the ground....Doctari has a video on youtube showing how to do this, search and you should find it.
What I would do (and I think Doctari does it something like this) is make a 6 foot piece of amsteel with fixed loop on each end. I say 6 foot because for the trees around here it would take at least that much to get around the tree. Girth hitch one loop to your haul loop and put a carabiner on the other loop. Bring the carabiner end around the tree and clip the biner to the line on the other side. You should now have a backpack hanging from a tree.
