I'm looking to buy a vast amount (roughly 500 yards) of fabric for a project I don't expect to complete for quite some time and was planning on purchasing it gradually, in installments. I know some fabric will break down over time, and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with silnylon breaking down, or is it pretty much stabile?
My thoughts off the hip is that it should be ok as it’s being used for tarps and the like that we expect to use for years barring any catastrophic incidents.
Dutch would have a good answer if he sees this post.

In extreme heat, cold, dampness, or being squashed and or abraded by other heavy items.
Also no close and extended contact with chemicals...
Corrosive, acidic chemlicals, insects, bugs, rats and mice that might find material perfect
for nesting.

the degradation factor for Silnylon seems to be UV light. If you keep it clean, dry and covered it should be fine.
I would keep it on a roll rather than folded. It does tend to pick up creases. which although they are not supposed to cause leaks, they do make it difficult to work with.
I have a Silnylon tarp from 2008 that has too many nights to count and has been left up for days at a time in direct sunlight at trail days and it still keeps me dry. It no longer sheds water very well and takes a bit longer to dry out.
No other fabrics can develop nasty odors as they break down. I have a couple of bins with old tents them that are not pleasant to open.
Yes -- PU breaks down and STINKS! (I also think it no longer "works" as waterproofing anymore, so you might want to just get rid of them!)Quote:
