October on the Southern 300 miles of the AT

October 1, I'm starting a 31-day south bound AT section hike from Sam's Gap, NC, though the GSMNP, to Springer with my hammock. I'm guessing I'll have lows in the 30's at night. I'm planning on sleeping in a 30 degree down mummy bag with a Therm A Rest Zrest pad, inside a thermal bivy that holds everything together. The bivy is somewhat breathable, and has a Velcro closure, so I can leave it open over my chest to avoid some condensation. I've got a set of marino wool thermals for sleeping. Since a UQ is not in the budget, does this sound like enough to sleep warm? I'm thinking of rigging a taco/sock out of some of the thinner tyvek and shock cord if I need it, but don't want to have the weight if I can help it. I've been practicing rigging my tarp low over the hammock to block wind, so I will do that for windy nights. I am 210 lb guy, usually a warm sleeper. It is hard to test low temps in September in Texas, my AC just wont go below 68...

Sounds like a great trip!

My first thought is that you should consider purchasing a cheap 1/2" thick ccf pad ($5 - 10) and cut out some wings. Pair them up with an SPE, or if you wanna be really cheap, skip the SPE and just duct tape or "weave" them on.

This would give you a lot better width/coverage for your shoulders and hips.

I also find that wearing non-constrictive clothing helps in colder temps. Especially socks. Too tight and you'll have cold feet.
