I am a big fan of DIY...tarps, trekking poles, stuff sacks, buck saw... but other than a CDT I don't think I would tackle, or do justice to a true quilt set. Something to aspire to...

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Cheaper...maybe not. It depends a lot on the design, how you value your time, and what materials you choose. I would bet in the long run it would be cheaper just to buy.
Better...that also depends on what you mean by better. Comparing the "loving hands of home" as my Grandma used to call it to store bought products is often like comparing apples to oranges. There are pros to both.
I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

So, worth sharing... I recall standing in front of your kit at MAHHA thinking.. how cool is that.. she made everything I am looking at. Less than a year later I was standing at a local hang with a few folks, answering their questions about DIY and said... Yep, I made everything you're looking at!!
Thank you for the inspiration and support. Your tutorials are almost as welcome as that crusty bread you baked at MAHHA!!

Not much more I can say then has already been said.
I am all about DIY and mostly for the sense of accomplishment in making something I haven't done before. I really enjoy the research, planning, and actual making part. I get to learn new skills and try new features that make things specific to me and my gear.
I do like to stand in front of my gear and say "yes, I made all of this." But from the looks on many faces when they hear that I do recognize that is not normal but more of a crazy idea. Most respond with "you are crazy".
Maybe I am a little but I do enjoy DIY and MMOG.
