    descender rings Shredding my rope

i like to use descender rings to create some tension in my setup.

with this setup, the rings break down my rope, got dents after only couple uses. not too happy about that.

harder ropes dont hold. bigger rings dont as well.

    community, please advice.

the ropes as fairly soft, but have a breaking point of over 800 kg (1900lbs, for those, stuck in the old system)

    descender rings Shredding my rope

When I got interested in hammocks and suspensions--I watched Shug's ten part series of videos on YouTube How to hang a hammock. He has great information. Also I watched YouTube videos of hundreds of different rigs. There were so many--I even made a few of my own suspensions. I used amsteel blue 1/8 for my rope and poly straps from WildernessLogics. I've since changed to Kevlar 3.3 straps from Dutch and now I've got some dyneema blue straps from Dutch.
I'm staying with amsteel 1/8 and have switched straps for light weight and packability. I tie knots in my straps and this is rough on straps. Also I've tried Spyderline--it's some tough rope--holds knots well and comes in several sizes and strengths.
I've made a few different suspensions shown on YouTube--you might be interested in Kokomo--a suspension I use that will not slip. Sometimes I hang at a flatter angle than the recommended 30 degrees. But I dont hang flat--just a little off 30 degrees.
This is rough on my straps since I tie knots in my straps.
    Good luck micks!

If weight and packability is not a problem--you are car camping or only hiking a short distance--you might try Spyderline--I don't remember the diameters and strengths but I got a size that holds about 1200 pounds and a larger size that held 2000 or 2500 pounds. The smaller size is packable and SargentRock even used it in some of his suspensions. The larger size is bulkier. You might try the larger size if you are going for a flatter suspension...

Wouldn't you be better off to use straps and cinch buckles like the rest of us or incorporate whoopie slings onto straps? Personally,I like to lark my descender rings onto the continuous loop on the hammock and then run the strap thru them with a slippery halfhitch to ensure no slippage. So all you really need is straps and continuous loops as you have the rings already.

If you like that diameter, Bluewater has the Titan cord while Maxim
has Tech cord. Both have a tough outer sheath & super strong internals.
Roughly a dollar a foot. Buy a 20ft roll & slice it in half....10ft(3m) & attach to either end of your hammock.
No signs of wear after 3 years of use with my rap ring setup & I'm
    out nearly every second weekend.

    Bulletproof.

....and just to be safe, don't forget a slippery half hitch to finish off.

are the ropes a bit soft u suggest?
what kind of rings do u use?

@five... only seen whoopies with max of 200 kg.... not enough for my taste. buckels.... do the have them climing grade? or also max 200- 300 kg?

Your local climbing shop will have a tech cord of some kind on their shelves. Have a chat to them.

The outer sheath protects the internal strands &
provides more friction wrapped around the rings than
bare dyneema. The more you use them the softer/more flexible they get. Its easier to grip the larger diameter cord with cold arthritic hands. Your hammock will fall to pieces before the suspension will.

My rings are SMC brand, aluminium. Lightweight & cheap.

Have fun experimenting....you will find a suspension
    that suits your needs.

    @ofurus

i dont tension my h. and dont put knots in it. so im less worried about that. but still .... well, im working on setups high in trees

also ive got a cargo h. under my main h. so ive got some kind of security there

so i want to be really safe.

Because someone asked why you didn't use whoopie slings ... The Hennessy hammocks use line as their suspension. They recommend a specific knot but it is inconvenient to tie and could be difficult to move for the adjustment that come after things are initially set up. Using those SMC climbing rings with the line allows a continuous adjustment and doesn't have nearly the "extra suspension length" overhead of slings. So you have very easy adjustment suspension with an easy to add locking half hitch.

Though line and rings are not my main suspension tools, I have used them several times and never experienced the wear in the line shown in your images.

As another view, it is rare that things "just happen"; there is "cause and effect" hidden around every corner. So what could be the cause of your "worn through rope" effect? You have the line, two rings, the way the line was locked by the rings, and the movement of the hammock perhaps putting a frictional/rubbing action on the line.

I guess what I'm saying is the rings put a pinch action on the line. So if you were to hold the rope in the tighten jaws of a crescent wrench, simulating a pinch, I'm guessing you'd be holding a long time before the line snapped/cut as it did. So I'm thinking it was something besides, or in conjunction with, the rings.
