BTW, this is what I was talking about. It's not that elegant, and I should have been more careful with the drilling the holes to get them centered, but it works. I also added stake loops about 1-2" from the bottom of each leg using some 1" webbing I salvaged from an old backpack that wore out. With the cross-bars and stakes in place, my stand was super stable. An added bonus is that the nub of 2x2 sticking out of the back of the outer leg makes a great place to tie off the tarp ridgeline.
