+1 on oldpappy. SB more versatile. I'd only get a TQ if I already had a bag as for the unexpectedly cold nights it can be a lifesaver!
All the other points on TQs are true too though.
Yes I use a sleeping bag
I use a sleeping bag as an top quilt
No sleeping bag
Depends on climate

I like my Snugpak2. I usually just have it covering me like a TQ, but If I don't want any draft I'll climb inside. With my SP2 and my JrB nest uq, im quite comfy down into the upper 30s.
quilts. down to10f on the ground or in the hammock. Side sleeper who moves a lot and I do fine.
I use both. I use a JRB top quilt (weighs about 1 lb) in the summer. And I use a down bag in the winter.
I use a poncho liner with a blizzard fleece layer I sewed to it.
Started off with a sleeping bag but now use TQs.
My wife's sleeping bag is her security blanket since she has been using it on all our camping trips since the early 70's. She has started to show interest in a TQ since I made one for her.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I have a summerweight mummy bag that I use as a topquilt, a bag liner, and a poncho liner. If I think it might get into the 30s or 40s, I take all three. Any warmer and either the poncho liner or the bag gets left behind. If 30s or lower are going to be the norm, I sub out the summerweight bag for my 30 degree bag, but really I don't know that I've ever gone lower than 30, and I'm not really itching to try.
rectangular sleeping bag......as a cocoon.
I started by using a Sleeping bag like a top quilt until I slowly acquired a few purpose made top quilts (and bottom quilts). Convenience was my main reason to change.
My son is still using his sleeping bag and prefers it. He's a bit active when sleeping and kept kicking top quilts off...

When I first got interested in getting back to camping I started to look at sleeping bags and ran like the wind. I shuddered to think of myself in a mummy bag....no way, no how!!
Fortunately, I had time on my side so by the time I actually invested in all the new gear I was going to need, I had had time to research everything. I stepped right into TQ, UQ and hammock rather than buying all that tenting gear and then buying more stuff...
