I won't second-guess your judgement of your own sewing skills, but my underquilt was the second sewing project I took up. The first thing I sewed was a nylon pillowcase. I did research how to make an underquilt for about 2 months though until I found a pattern and directions that I understood without any trouble at all. Once I had that it was just a matter of sitting down and doing it. Which ended up taking me the better part of 2 weeks in my spare time. All in all I am proud of the quilt as only my second sewing project ever, but I now see where I could have vastly improved it by having done more sewing projects beforehand.

You can do it! I made a 5.0 oz climasheild apex UQ and I'm 13. Much easier than it looks fer sure.

How much would it cost, and could you give me a partslist if you have the time. I don't really know how to sew but I can always learn : ), I do have a sewing machine.
I found this image on the internet.

The under quilt was easy to make and does not require sewing. The combined cost of materials was about $35.00.
It seems warm enough although I have nothing to compare it with. The under quilt weighs 1 lb. 9 oz.

I would recommend a Kick A$$ Quilt from Paul at Arrowhead-equipment.com. Very warm, lightweight, and inexpensive compared to down. mine took me down to 0 F. just fine! Below that, i just put some pants on and a shirt. Want it cooler? loosen the shock cables a little. Paul's underquilts are my personal favorite. Heck, i slept outside last night with it.... stayed toasty warm! Not to mention, but, he recently made all of the KAQ automatically include APEX climashield at the same price. Now that's a great deal. Now good luck on your decision, and I hope you the best!

Glad I could help. The poncho liner under quilt is a bit bulky and it’s not “ultralight” but it is very inexpensive compared to its commercial counterparts.

I made my own climashield and m50 40 degree UQ using instructions here. It's a nice quilt but I didn't save much. If we didn't already have a sewing machine it would have been a loss. But I'm proud of it and when I use it in camp and people ask, what is the lumpy green thing under your hammock I can say, "I made that"

If your looking for cheep there is nothing cheeper then pad surfing on multiple WM blue pads. They will work but arent the most comfortable, but if it gets you out enjoying the wilderness it might be the way to go at first.
