Holy cow! I can't believe this thread has gone this far. I quit reading at divaB's post #22 and now find it is 7 pages long. I just turned 63 and find it hard to get past 3 AM without getting out of the hammock to answer the call of nature. Reason #1 I don't want to pee in my hammock. #2, stepping outside the hammock at 3AM exposes you to a little bit of nature that may make you stand out there a little longer in a bit of awe at the magnificence of nature. #3 don't we all know that peeing around you site keeps the critters away. #4 the most important, the sooner you take care of business the sooner you can get back into that nice warm cacoon.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

oh God, if I tried to pee in my hammock I'd probably wind up peeing all over everything. I get up, much as I don't want to, and make it happen with the aid of a Go-Girl type device. Funny though, whenever I sleep in a bed, which isn't very often these days, I NEVER have to get up in the night. Anyone know what's up with that??

I stand up too. I would never be able to pee in/from the hammock! I generally wake up to pee about 4-5 a.m., regardless of where I'm sleeping. In a group hang situation, this lets me take care of business with the privacy that darkness provides and lets me get back in the hammock and sleep later in the morning.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

    Some critters maybe.
The lack of salt in many areas and the fact that these animals are attracted to the scent. Deer and porcupines are the most common animals I see wandering around my camp in the middle of the night and they go right to those spots.

Reminds me of the father(ex truck driver) in the "Trailer Park Boys", who was compelled to urinate in bottles and then fling them far away:-)

Last year I bought a pair of those down booties that have an overcover boot. I don't mind getting up now as my feet never get cold, which was the worst part of getting up!

Maybe we should see how many pages would run in two days about leaving the hammock for play time
