I've been thinking of making something like this for a while. I thought it'd make a good shoulder bag strap but I got a new camera and I didn't like the strap that came with it so the camera got the strap and not the bag. While I was at it I made a hand strap from paracord.
These Black Rapid Straps seem to be all the rage lately among the camera crowd, but I use an L-bracket and I don't like all that hardware.
What to do? What to do? Why not make a tiny hammock that spreads the load of the camera over the whole shoulder? So I made a little end channel hammock, about 6"x18"-ish with a whoopie sling as the camera suspension. The fixed eye of the whoopie is larks headed thru the channel on one end, then the line goes out thru the channel on the other end and then into the bury of the whoopie. On the shoulder strap/hammock is a pocket with a grommet in the bottom so the tail of the whoopie can store in there. On the opposite end of the hammock is another pocket and the whole hammock can store "inside itself". It weighs 14 grams or there abouts. I larks headed a continuous loop on the L-bracket on the camera and connect the camera to the strap with a soft shackle. The beauty of this system is that none of the connections interfere with the L-bracket to tripod interface, and there's no metal so it won't scratch up my camera.
I have a holster type bag that can be put on the camera and the camera "carries" the bag with the suspension coming out of the corner of the lid... Sorry no pix of that. Or I could connect the soft shackle to the bag. Either way so far so good. I'm not gonna win any fashion shows with it but it feels better wrapped around your shoulder that a strap going across the top of your shoulder.
