Well, I meant more in the "shoulder season backpacking" sense. See, for example, here: article on shoulder season hiking

We're off to Mt. Mitchell tomorrow. Hiking the Black Mountain Crest Trail again.

I hadn't heard the term before, but hooray and huzzah, its finally cooling off. Been able to sleep with the windows open for a few nights now. Sitting here next to an open window and listening to the hummingbirds.

Its not going to get down into the 40s here for months yet. But we did get down to 61 this morning.

The Ospreys have left - which means it's fall!

About ten years ago, ospreys, after being devastated by DDT, were reintroduced to my coastal town. When they arrive in March, I know winter is over. And when they depart in late August, early September, I know fall weather is on its way!

They were here last week, and now the ospreys are gone. Temps were in the fifties this morning - I had to put a fleece on! The low temps are also cramping the style of the mosquitoes, which is good 'cause they were bad last week.

Bring on shoulder season, when the ospreys head south for the winter!

We are slowly loosing our hummingbirds. They are moving south a few at a time, as we are filling the feeders less. Its alittle early for the hummingbirds as they normally hang around till first of Oct and leave enmass, but because of the funky weather this year,,they are trickling down slowly and leaving. We have another cold front moving in Friday nite.
