    DIY hammock shapes

Has anyone tried making a hammock that was a little bit shorter in the middle than it is on the edges. Like a concave cat cut at the head and foot ends of the hammock. I was laying in bed thinking that maybe a hammock that had slightly less fabric in the middle might pick up my rear end a little bit. and having slightly more fabric along the sides might make it easier to get flat if you are laying diagonally. Not sure if that is making sense. If so ... has it been done?

I think that is how a Hennesey is made.

Yep. It doesn't really pickup the middle as much as tighten up the sides.
You can play with the curve slightly to tighten or loosen the sides, but remember a little goes a long way.

Edit: Sorry, I said that backwards. Having a shorter center makes the edges more floppy.

Hmmm. I would have assumed that having less fabric on the center line of a hammock would make the center tighter, not the edges. It would be interesting to see diagrams of different patterns people have used to make hammocks and the results of each. I am not confident in my sewing enough YET to make one that supports my weight.

Oh ok. No problem. Thanks for the input. I guess one of these days I would like to try some different patterns. I don't currently have extra time and money to spend experimenting. Until then, I will have to stand on the shoulders of others and learn from their experience. Thanks again!

Hennessy is a plain rectangle for the bed. It is the netting that establishes the asym nature.

I tired the parallelogram design once but found it to be an utter failure. But in the interest of full disclosure it was my first attempt at a hammock and I hadn't a clue what I was doing.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

So, is there any way you could show a drawing or picture of the shape you tried?

That's my best effort at ASCII art. There's an old post on the forums that discusses the concept but my search foo is phooey. Maybe some one else can track it down.

If you want to play around with the convex or concave curves on the ends I would cut a normal rectangular piece and play with the whipping. That way you don't trash the fabric if you don't like it. Plus you can try several variations on the one piece until you find what you are seeking.

This is what I was thinking. Or some variation of it.
